Confused? Here's what to know as per the report from Anime News Network:

  • Japan's Toei Animation, Sammy (a part of Sega Sammy Holdings), Sola Entertainment and Marza Animation Planet (animation studio behind Sonic: Night of the Werehog, Harlock: Space Pirate, and Resident Evil: Vendetta) announced they'd be joining forces with China's Bona Film Group to make a CG-animated movie temporarily called The Monkey Prince, which is (unsurprisingly) based off Journey to the West.
  • They're approaching this with a global focus using Japan's power of content and China's technological strengths and market power.
  • Speaking of Sonic the Hedgehog, his character designer, Naoto Oshima, is cooking up the story and character designs for the movie.
  • And how's America involved? The movie's being directed by John A. Davis, whose references include Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius and the script will be coming from J. David Stem and David N. Weiss, who also wrote for Shrek 2.
  • As for animation production, that's bring handled by Tenh Animation Magic, which was established in October 2017 as a joint invest by Toei, Sammy, Sola Digital Arts, and Sanzigen's Galaxy Graphics.

And we have a teaser poster:

So...any thoughts? Just by the appearance of Sun Wukong (if that's who the character in the poster is), I'm pretty much onboard this!

Bump.

We got a synopsis and screenshots!

“In the near future, a young girl and her baby brother find themselves separated from their parents during an alien invasion. Desperate to be reunited with them, Elle enlists the help of a magical but wayward Monkey Prince banished from his land by his father the King. Together they set off on an incredible journey aided by the Monkey Prince’s special powers and a cast of magical characters they meet along the way; a shape-shifting staff, a ditsy spirit guide, a sentient cloud named Nimbus, and a team of ‘Mini Monkeys’ who can be summoned by the Monkey Prince with just one hair plucked from his head. It’s certainly not all plain sailing; the Monkey Prince is reluctant to change his self-centered ways and Commander Kuroc and his alien army are determined to stop them, but eventually they will learn to work together towards their common goal.”
