Steam Page

How many of us Tropers have played and enjoyed SimAnt? Any other fellow suscribers to Ant Canada and Nordic Ant channels? This game was made for us.

Flexible Games is playing this on his channel here (starts from first episode).

So is this the same game that had to cancel its development because two shitheads that were part of the dev team spent the entire budget on hookers and drugs?

Idk but it was a similar game to this, with ants and stuff.

Ant Simulator is apparently what it was called.

They're working on leafcutter ants now, and the selection of predators is cool.

It's nice having a few different breeds of ants to unlock and play with, and Freeplay is awesome.

I do occasionally watch the ant youtube channels because it is kind of neat.

I also have the game. It is still rather early in its development so there isn't a lot to the current gameplay but it is getting there and has promise.

Who watches the watchmen?

Aww man, I remember playing Sim Ant on a Macintosh way back in the day when they still went by the full name Macintosh. Will definitely be checking this out, because I had never found another game quite like it.

Is gameplay similar? Take control of a queen, establish a colony, take control of a worker/soldier, explore, kill things, gather food, rinse, repeat?

Rather than directly controlling a single ant you have strategic 'command' of the colony, with command groups that will follow pheromone markers you lay. Also the population grows based on the brood tiles you lay, which costs food. But yeah the main thing (raise colony, eat threats, grow powerful) is the same, although they downplay the alates (possibly because in mission mode the action ends before you get to the point where you can grow alates).

Wow the Wood Ant missions are actually fairly tough.

Completed the current tier of my formicarium's progress. Wood Ants (Artillery) are nasty, they utterly obliterate predators and rival colony ants.

Basic colony tips:

  • Adjacent bonuses are needed to upgrade any tiles placed in a colony (walls and neighboring worked colony tiles count to adjacent bonuses, and upgraded tiles provide additional bonuses).
  • Work Ants (20 food per tile) are cheap to spam for faster foraging throughput, but are fragile without upgrades.
  • Having at least 1, at least 2 command groups of Soldier ants is highly recommended - once your colony is large enough, having a dedicated nest entrance guard group of Soldiers is highly recommended (and at least 1 group of Soldiers that can be directed to attack random threats or clear out internal threats to the nest when tunneling).
  • Food is needed to rehatch fallen ants - keep a respawn quota in your stockpile so you can get replacement soldiers/workers.
  • Unlike Sim Ant where general colony nutrition affects your population and keeps queens alive, here in Empires the food counter is used for investing in brood tiles (1 ant per brood tile) and for designating speed tiles (for faster travel through a larger nest) and Food Stockpiles (for keeping a food surplus beyond the initial 70). Workers prioritize foraging - soldiers can carry food when there is no danger but will drop it to engage threats or prey.
  • Redirecting ants with the pheromone command groups takes time - ants will auto-pathfind (blindly) following the arrows to the target zone, and if there was a previous marker, it will continue to pull a small number of ants that decreases over time as it 'expires'. To immediately pull ants around, there is a button in the command bar to instantly disperse the current pheromone marker and allow you to instantly set a new one at the next target point.
  • Curse wolf spiders with every fibre of your being. They are irritatingly fast and deadly.
  • Slaver Ants are a joke if you have a dedicated command group of Soldiers blockading the entrance to your nest and force them to run a gauntlet/chokepoint to get to your brood tiles.
  • Generally having more ants is better than having bigger (upgraded) ants, but Lv 3 Wood Ants (ranged) have deadly strong acid in either rapid-fire (with slowing effect) or artillery style (with splash damage). Also tougher Lv 3 Wood Ant Workers in freeplay can soft-tank for ranged wood ants to zone threats while dumping acid on them from a distance.
