SQUALL: WAA!
Fixed that for you
Well assuming that's true, Sora isn't a Square Enix character, Geno is a D-List Mario character and I doubt that Square Enix would let Sakurai use him when they could actually advertise something, I don't think there will be any more Final Fantasy characters, and everything else is way too niche.
Dragon Quest. It's Dragon Quest.
This song needs more love.It seems like Square Enix only barely wants anything to do with Smash Bros since they have Dissidia and Cloud being in Smash kind of draws away from that game, thus the 2 music tracks when every other franchise has 20+.
So if this guy's source is reliable I feel like Geno's the most probable, the least skin off their back, and what will make a small but very vocal minority happy. Dragon Quest is a bit harder to pin down because as far as I know it doesn't have an icon outside the Slimes, and coming up with a moveset for them seems it would take a lot.
I'm still not sure if the deal is that Square wants nothing to do with Smash Bros. or if they're just intensely protective of Final Fantasy. I could buy both.
Either way, I still don't see them agreeing to Geno so readily. There's nothing in it for them at all.
This song needs more love. The agreed to use his likeness in Smash 4. Cloud, Midgar, two songs, the victory fanfare, and the Geno costume - Geno is 1/6th of all the IP Square has been willing to share with Smash Bros so far.
If it's a Final Fantasy character, I'd like it to be Zidane. But I know it's never happening.

Much as I do like Zidane (IX being my first and favourite of the Final Fantasy franchise), I'd personally rather see an inclusion that better represents the series' history on Nintendo systems. Black Mage would probably be the best one, though I'd be lying if I said I wouldn't prefer Bartz.
Switch FC code: SW-4420-1809-1805Eh, if we're trying to pick out an inclusion from a Final Fantasy game originally published on a Nintendo system, I figure it'd have to be either a generic Black Mage, Kain, or Terra, with the edge going to Kain (I've given my reasons for that particular pick before). That said, considering it would totally fit the character, I could see Square Enix pulling a real fast one and agreeing to allow Gilgamesh (who, upon consideration, would probably be the best possible choice).
Reminder: Offscreen Villainy does not count towards Complete Monster. The problem I see with another FF character is that they still specifically use the FFVII logo to represent Cloud's home series in promotional Smash material (such as on the current Smash Bros website). If another FF character who isn't from VII was planned, then they would have gone with a more generic Final Fantasy logo instead.
In other words, we're getting Sephiroth. Case closed.
How convenient.
I have a message from another time...We're not getting another Final Fantasy character, we're absolutely not getting Sora, and Dragon Quest has two huge hurdles to jump over in the form of Koichi Sugiyama and Akira Toriyama.
Sakurai will try to get Dragon Quest in first, but if he can't then why pick anyone but Geno?
I just realized a Dragon Quest character would be a troll on Goku fans.
I get why Sugiyama would be an issue (though not much of one considering they could just take the Final Fantasy route for music) but has Toriyama been an issue in the past?
This song needs more love. It's just a matter of having to go through another outside source to get a character in like Sora, only instead of a giant megaconglomerate it's one of the most beloved artists in Japan.
Sugiyama owns the music. Even if they go the FF route of just ripping a couple songs they still have to get his approval and give him a payout. Also he's literal human shit.
Does Toriyama have ownership over the DQ designs? In most cases, an artist commisioned to make assets or concept art for a larger work signs over the IP rights of those designs over to the entity who paid for them, unless a special arrangement is made otherwise.
The same goes for music assets too.
I don't know much about Toryiama as a person, but I get the impression that he wouldn't be an issue here. He just comes across as kind of chill based on his work.

If a tree falls in the forest and nobody remembers it, who else will you have ice cream with? The guy is letting other people run Dragon Ball, his own brain child originally, nowadays. He's cracked jokes about it, and how for the most part people just walk up to him, ask him to approve an idea, ocassionally draft a new character design or concept, and get back to doing their own thing once he inevitably says yes.
So even if he had any ownership of the Dragon Quest designs I highly doubt he'd be all that difficult to negotiate with.
He owns the artwork to Dragon Quest, yeah.
All this talk about Dragon Quest, RIP Crono
I like when people talk about how Crono is more deserving than Geno despite being from an even older game.
"Deserve" is really just code for "character I want and yours is dumb!"
I will freely admit Geno is just a character I like from a game I liked. That it is a Mario titled is just a bonus.
First thing's first... As of the last time I saw anything related to it (which would be about a minute ago, when I rechecked the website), they were just using "FF" in the font Square has used for Final Fantasy since the fourth installment for Cloud's logo. That could easily be reused for anyone in the series.
For Dragon Quest... while Toriyama may own the designs, from everything I gather, he's not terribly defensive about their use (this wouldn't be the first crossover with anything DQ related if it happened). I would be surprised if he was a hold-up. Sugiyama, admittedly, I don't know too much about, so I have no idea if he'd be stubborn about rights.
That said, this did remind me of the fact that, in terms of another third-party JRPG series I'd love to see represented, that most of the Tales series character designs have the rights under the control of Kosuke Fujishima... and while I haven't taken a deep dive into those, the fact that Tales characters don't cross over outside of the escort titles nearly as much does have me wonder if rights issues would prevent Lloyd or Yuri from ever coming over.
Reminder: Offscreen Villainy does not count towards Complete Monster.
It's going to be Zidane, Tidus, Yuna, Vaan, whoever the Crystal Chronicles protag is, whoever the Wo FF protag is, and chibi Noctis to promote the FF games coming to Switch. Squall appears as a retextured Waluigi AT wielding a Gunblade instead of a tennis racket.
