I kind of thought the darker elements (the yeti being mind-connected by the contract like a cult) didn't amount to anything in the long run.

I liked that it wasn't darker. Donald's anger issues are the real antagonist of that plot. The yetis are just telepathic magical spa workers who genuinely care about their clients and want to see them get better.

[up] Yeah, it's a bit of a red hearing. It takes a bit of an ominous twist at the end there, but it turns out the Yetis are exactly what they appear to be at first glance. They're just friendly, magical, spa workers, who are actually genuinely interested in helping their visitors solve their problems.

[up][up] I'm pretty sure that's just how their magic works. And anyway, as Magical contracts go, this one is pretty benign (if slightly annoying.)

They do get pretty annoyed at Xandra and Gary wants Donald and Daisy to recommend him, so I'm guessing they're just average employees.

Episode 13, the season finale.

I loved the continuity cavalcade, though I felt some characters were missing, such as the Nazca line guardians. The sequel hook looks like a fun lead-in to a possible season 2. What was that house at the end?

At the end, it definitely looks like Baba Yaga's walking house. Which is... interesting. She's getting a lot of rounds as a public domain mythological figure these days.

Who knows, maybe the references will transcend property and this Baba-Yaga will look like Bartok's.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but despite the Baba Yaga sequel hook, the show is actually over. Production wrapped up a LONG time ago, especially after Disney pulled the plug on this franchise [hence why it was dumped on a streaming app in the Philippines instead of on Disney XD or Disney Junior/Channel] https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e6Lq771TVm4&t=2m24s

Any definitive answer? We do know that two seasons were in production and there's a twitter account that claims that the second season is done, just unreleased.

It's ironic talking about Baba Yaga here after seeing Ant-Man And The Wasp. ;)

Sadly we know there are no plans for a second season. But overall.... Matt Danner. .... you got some spanin ta do. You crazy coot. :D :D This whole show was certainly a head trip.

Its just a matter of waiting, unless the executives at Disney really hate the show for no reason.

Oh. I posted that before reading the post about the second season being done. It would be a shame not to air it after they did all that hard work!

Ep 13

I like this courageous Donald, though we know him for his temper too so I hope they find a balance with that.

"Donald went to his destiny. Do you know how long that takes?" [lol] Goddamn funniest thing! Oh god Tress Macneille.

Embryo Felldrake is disturbing. And yes I know he grows into a big boy, but that's not any consolation.

Who's that duck in the pool?

Moonbots! From the moon episode?? ... previous characters are gonna come back, aren't they?

lol Adolescent Felldrake.

MOOOOOOOO-ve over!

Oh apple sauce.

The duck in the pool is Blaze Beak. Can't find any information on this character, but as we've established the makers of this show have a borderline encyclopedic knowledge of extremely obscure comics.

... April, May and June only now see the purple storm clouds after completing the puzzle? Weren't they just outside?

And now we return to the beginning of the show!

The more Xandra shoots him, the younger he gets!

... oh right Xandra was Felldrake's old servant. I forgot about that.

We got a wizard head now. ... Okay...

Well the theme song is playing during the fight, but I had expected them to SING it while fighting! Oh well.

"We can reimprison him!" Or you know, kill him? Just some advice.

Beak Meet Toilet.

What happened to Shellgoose's powers? Can't he just fly over to Felldrake and stop this? Why does he need to row on the golden toilet? Why do I need to type that previous sentence?? The world may never know.

... what happened?

I'm not sure you can just rip up an ID card like paper. Unless the institute is really stingy with how it spends its budget.

[lol] That's Donald's middle name??

And here we have spoken confirmation that Donald and Shellgoose are related.

Well this certainly does open up a lot of chances for a Season Two story!

Yes, Donald Fauntleroy Duck is his established full name in some continuities.

It's been his official middle name since 1942. IIRC, he's the only member of the Fab Five to canonically have one.

This show is frustrating, because I can't get a handle on how I feel about it. It's ridiculously fun, but I also can't help thinking it's kind of a mess.

The writing is inconsistent and feels like they are making it up as they go along, so plot points seem to come out of nowhere, and stuff just kinda happens. The way they handled Daisy is kind of awful, and in general, with a few exceptions, characterization is not as sharp or consistant as it could have been. There's also just generally a lot of stuff that they don't bother to explain or anything.

Well.... maybe there's some truth to people saying its feels more like the old Disney Afternoon shows,... because a lot of the time THOSE didn't make sense!

[up] I'm pretty sure the biggest reason it works nearly as well as it does, is because it doesn't even take itself remotely seriously. It runs completely on Rule of Fun and Rule of Funny, and just takes you along for the ride.

All this makes something that is a legimate blast to watch, but very hard to judge critically.

The only problems I have with characterisation are with José. Otherwise, I think the characters go through well defined arcs, surprisingly enough.

I think the emotional heights of the series are episodes 6 and 12.

José sort of gets shafted, just a little, in this show. He has his moments, sure, but I notice that he tends to be overshadowed by Panchito. Of course Donald gets the bulk of attention and development, while the other two Caballeros play support more often than not, but I notice that Panchito gets more moments to shine.

A lot of the scenes seem like they follow the pattern: "Donald provides the set-up or has an emotional reaction to whatever situation they're in — José says or does something funny — Panchito says or does something funnier."

One thing I loved is that this show was VERY good at establishing and keeping consistent Xandra being a super-powerful goddess, but also having the Caballeros be competent enough that she doesn't completely overshadow them. I know there were some worries early on that the show wouldn't balance them right, making one side powerful enough that it makes the other side feel useless, despite the fact that they shouldn't be.

The ending also very clearly established that, even at their best, Xandra is still an irreplaceable part of the Caballeros' team.
