In a visual medium? Emphasis on a cheerful or subdued and natural shade of red. Smooth lines — nothing spiky or jagged. Throw in some gold and/or white. Body language.
From The Legend of Korra, Fire Lord Izumi◊,General Iroh◊, and Asami Sato◊ do a pretty good job of making the color scheme of the (formerly villainous) Fire Nation look non-evil.

Honestly, I'm not sure you even need to do that much. This is a color combination that commonly goes with Obviously Evil, but just the colors alone aren't normally a case of it.

I have a character in my story who wears a red-and-black (but mostly black) outfit. Problem is, that color combination looks evil, which isn't great for this character, since she's supposed to be highly respected. I can't simply change the color scheme, because it has special plot-relevant significance to the character (too spoiler-y to go into here). So how do I make my black-and-red-wearing character not look sinister?
If it helps...
