yes but people having been waiting for a kh 3 ever since kh2, and while there were a bunch of side games none of them have been on a main console as a sequel to kh2 till now

Difference between Kingdom Hearts III and games like DNF or Star Citizen is that it isn't a broken mess like those games are.

The Kairi thing is probably the one thing in this game that legit gets me angry. Largely because I've been waiting 7 years for them to make good on the promise that she'd get to fight in the final battle and be more than she's been in the series thus far. For this to happen again makes that setup all feel like a lie.

I'm curious how widespread the Kairi criticism is. Part of me is hoping that if it becomes prominent enough, Nomura might consider dong more her in the future?

It seems relatively big from what I've seen. Almost every person I've seen who's finished the game and was invested in the story has mentioned it as a negative.

It'd have to get very harsh, I think.

DDD made Sora despised in the west and yet he's basically the same in KH 3. So the level of criticism would have to be far more amplified than that.

He's not really the Same in 3 as he is in DDD. He's much closer to 2 more than anything.

Eh, I don't think that people disliked him in this game? Certainly, I didn't.

they don't care as much about the west as they do about japan, nomura had to be told hey can you not release the japanese version months before the rest of the world.

so maybe if a bunch of japanese fans complain it will mean something.

or kairi is technincally owned by disney give disney bad press till they make nomura do better

Probably because he's not quite so happy-go-lucky this time around. He gets frustrated by his personal setbacks, worried about the people he still needs to save, and reaches some pretty dark places in the final world.

Disney are still a rather conservative company. Many of their attempts at trying to be with the times come across as more shallow cash grabs than genuine changes to their movies (see Will smith as the Genie from the Live Action Aladdin movie).

So I wouldn't count on them bugging Nomura to make Kairi more prominent.

They did. He was largely considered The Scrappy after DDD.

Point is. It'd take more than angry western fans to actually make an impact on character decisions.

Correction: He was seen as a Scrappy IN DDD. In KH 3, he's back to his previous characterizaton from 2.

DDD was years ago, though - I'm talking about what they thought of him in III, and I personally thought he was pretty well-rounded, for the most part.

I think what made Sora so interesting in this game to me was that at several points, he seemed like he was actively afraid of growing up.

I know that at least two or three spots, he'll say something genuinely profound and then immediately turn around and make a joke. Like he felt it was required of him.

To say nothing of the Final World stuff.

Anyway, since I do think that the Japanese fanbase will matter here, does anyone know how they've reacted to the Kairi thing?

I didn't have any takeaways like that. Can you point me to the scenes so I can rewatch? It's quite possible I formed an opinion I refused to change.

A lot less people played 3D compared to KH 3, and KH 3 is a much more anticipated and high-profile game. On top of that, women in refrigerators is a topic people are much more touchy about than whether Sora is interesting or not.

Maybe those things won't matter enough, but I do think the situation is a bit different here.

Obviously it's a different situation. The point is, as already has been said: will the Japanese fandom care?

Just off the top of my head there was a scene in Corona where he got all solemn and talking about his journey with Donald and Goofy has been unforgettable, then has a realization like "Wait crap that was too mature" and makes a jab at Donald. Ordinarily I would chalk that up to tonal inconsistency but Sora's reaction right before the joke felt very deliberate.

There was also the Winnie the Pooh stuff which basically made it explicit and the whole "I'm nothing without my friends" thing at the end definitely played out like Sora needed to get over his insecurities mature past that.

I know a number of friends who went in not playing the spinoffs who are enjoying the game. Which is why Im not sure why people are surprised. Heck some of them loathed KH 2 back in the day especially the prologue with Roxas. But are enjoying it immensely despite the flaws they find. Usually Frozen.

Its why I feel its a very subjective game because there are many who are enjoying it just as there are ones who aren't. Not to mention the nostalgia of Updated Rereleased versions where they act like those kinds of editions were the original product that was originally released.

the winnie the pooh world is outstanding in terms of writing about the fear of growing up and letting go of your childhood in general, and it's one of the best written parts of III hands down.

One thing I noticed is that a lot of the complaints people have with 3 are similar if not identical to many of the complaints leveled at 2 when it originally came out.

On the flipside, I've also seen people disingenuously use that to imply that people simply changed their minds about 2 over time, when in fact all the complaints about vanilla KH 2 are still valid and it was KH 2 FM that came out years afterwards in the west that caused opinions to shift.

Hm, thanks. I'll rewatch when I get the chance. By your descriptions, I may have zoned out during the Winnie the Pooh scenes.

Oh definitely. This is part of what annoys me. Because people always think of the Updated Version when they talk about how great a previous game was. Rather than the original product.
