I'm not sure whether to put this in Writer's Block or World Building, but I placed it here since this is more about the characters than it is about the setting.
Strawman Political details negative depictions of conservatives and liberal (or progressives). But I want to go one step further and go into the realm of the fantastic. In this thread, I want to talk about antagonists representing the past and antagonists representing the future.
The past is awful. It is full of cruelty and ignorance. People lived in fear of nature, for disease and hunger took the lives of many. It is in the past that dark gods, demons, ghosts, and other monsters reigned supreme. Although these threats have been sealed away, their followers are working from the shadow to ensure the return of their glorious dark lords.

Demons
Ghosts
Old Tyrants
The future is bleak. The world has been polluted by unchecked industrialization. On top of that, AI and alien invaders are seeking to supplant humans as the dominant species on the planet. But even if humanity prevails, they will still be under the thumb of various dictators, corporate or state, who managed seized power during these dark times.
