I guess they have natural resistance. I mean, they'd have to, right? All of the RE protagonists seem to be impervious to contracting the virus du jour through the repeated injuries they receive in gameplay. In story, I suppose they never get bitten even once.

I think Word of God said around 10% of the world's population has some sort of immunity to the T-Virus and others. It sounds more plausible than "they're so badass they never got hit/bit once"

Leon was going to bite it with the Las Plagas, though. Jill also needed a cure mid-RE 3. So it's not 100% immunity for all of them.

I'd love to map those statistics to the population of Raccoon City to figure out how many survivors there should have been. If 10% of the population isn't infected, some percentage of them should be able to escape the city and/or survive within it despite everything that happens (the nuke notwithstanding), yet we hardly see anyone, and there doesn't seem to be anybody who's immune to infection from direct contact, like bites.

Word of God aside, more than like six people should have escaped the city.

(In fairness, I stopped caring about the franchise after RE3, so maybe this is explained later.)

It's not really gameplay and story segregation since we actually see them in contact with the smoke. Maybe you need to be in direct inhalation and not just secondary?

"I said 10% of WORLD population, not the city alone."

So Raccoon City just happened to be populated by a million people who ALL lost the statistical jackpot? The odds of that are so low as to break even the flimsy logic of Gameplay and Story Segregation.

Outbreak may be non canon but there were a bunch of normie B-listers who seemed to have the same luck, or immunity.

Even if some in Raccoon are immune, they aren't immune to dying in general. After all, if you aren't a player character or Niccoali, you aren't living.

Math is hard, but let's try it.

  • RC has 1 million inhabitants before the outbreak.
  • 90% become directly infected by the T-virus; 10% are resistant: 100K uninfected.
  • 99% of those die before they can escape. 1% remain: 1,000 survivors.

A 99.9 percent mortality rate is basically unheard of even in the worst disasters, but even if you assume that, you've still got a thousand or so people who'll make it out. Maybe Umbrella rounded them all up with a military cordon around the entire perimeter of the city... with forces already in place before they knew the disaster had happened, and not a single person was able to communicate about it before being nabbed. Sure.

And what about people who were traveling out of RC at the time of the outbreak, got infected, but didn't turn until they got somewhere else? Surely that must have happened in at least a few cases. As contagious as the T-virus is (aerosol spread, 90% infection rate, incubation of under a day, 100% mortality rate), the world is fucked. For all their flaws, the films did a better job of portraying this.

So from my understanding 2 and 4 are the most successful games in the franchise? I think I will buy the 4-6 compilation before moving on to the Revelations games.

I wouldn't make that decision based solely on how successful each game was.

The biggest reason the outbreak should of been uncontainable was the cause in the first place: rodents. Rats eating corpses from the Spencer Estate way out in the mountains should of infected other rats, larger animals and humans alike throughout the Rockies and eventually the entire Midwest at the very least.

Agreed, but I still don't understand the mechanism for mass transmission to humans. Tens of thousands of people don't get bitten by rats every day, nor would it spread rat-to-rat as fast as it seems to. The virus is clearly airborne at some point, yet ceases to be after a few days, allowing new people to enter the zone without immediately getting infected. Past that initial period, transmission is via bites.

Individual pieces of the story work, but not the assembled whole.

Rats are normally not aggressive to humans. We are too big for them to pick fight with and we normally don't attack their hideout in person.

Also, the Spencer lab outbreak was at least partially contained. It didn't infect the whole city, at least not immediately. We are led to believe in RE2 that the major outbreak happened when Birkin was ambushed trying to escape the main lab beneath the police station. The vials of T-Virus spilled and ... somehow... infected tens of thousands in a matter of hours. There's no way to account for this.

Maybe the virus makes the rats aggressive so they spread it very quickly, but the quantity of rats who "eat" the material just isn't enough. The rats would spread it to other rats, who would bite humans and animals, in an exponential amplification curve, but it would take time. Remember that Birkin is infected with G at this point and his "evolution" only takes a matter of days.

Hardly worth mentioning at this point, but the longer it takes for mass infection to occur, the more time there is for communication about the situation to reach the outside world, and the harder it is for Umbrella, who presumably knows about the outbreak before people start dying en masse, to prevent that information from getting out or stop people who have been infected from leaving.

I'd always assumed the rats were more aggressive than usual, yeah, since that seems to be the most consistent change suffered by animals that otherwise don't mutate much from T-Virus infection. There were also several infected crows that likely left the mansion before it blew up and almost certainly a few dogs hunting in the woods outside it that could of spread further than the Arklay Mountains.
