In The Deep Down Dark Deep

"And so they sent us in all at once in the same place, and not individually at separate places? And making our goal be a fetch quest? If this is simply a test of strength, then it certainly isn't starting off like one."

Falling back to her tic of pushing her glasses against the top of her nose, she closes her eyes with a smirk.

"When this is done, we'll be sorted into teams anyways, so what does individual strength matter? We'll be having others to cover for us for all the years we spend here."

Underground

Regina raised her goggles and allowed her eyes to re-adjust to the darkness. Whatever light her goggles could give were still no match for her faunus eyesight. She used her arm to push off the ground like a stilt, sailing through the air to the front.

"I was gonna go in front no matter what anyone says," she said.

She turned back to the girl wearing a kimono.

"Yeah, you can just like, leave anytime. Good luck with that," she said. "We'll decide for ourselves if we think teamwork is valuable in this profession where people normally work in groups of four. Ha ha."

She stuck out her tongue at kimono girl and launched off the ground again, this time further ahead. Despite how much distance she gave herself, she was still visible by the glow of her goggles shining light upward. She seemed eager; perhaps a little too eager to be the first to get ambushed by Grimm.

"I'll holler when there's Grimm!"

"That's great if you're a dreamer, but not everyone is so lucky we wind up with great teammates. I can think of a few... undesirables," Lina said to Sini. Her eyes darted around in the dark. Yeah, at least one undesirable.

"But if we're stuck with some real bozos then we'll be riding the dysfunction express and have to watch our own backs," she kept walking forward, boots crunching. "I'll watch your six for now, these boots were made for a little more than walking."

Observation

Isidora snorted at Regina's comment. "I'll have to discipline her for that later," she said. She looked at Kou. "Your methods do work, Kou, and you make a point, but sometimes I worry that you push the students too far." Her eyes focused when Sini took point. "She's going to be a great Team Leader. Verina, too." Hai's comment made Isidora raise an eyebrow, and Regina's response made her laugh. "Wrong," she said, shaking her head. "I suppose she'll learn, in time, but without teamwork, they're not getting anywhere. It's sad, though, that Regina's attitude isn't quite right for a leader, because she makes some great points."

Underground

The first Grimm to appear within the little light available was a beowulf, and then another, and then another. There was a skittering from above, and some Grimm, about three metres long could be seen, climbing down the walls.

Kou shrugged. "Maybe last year we could've afforded to push the students a little less, though I honestly doubt it," she said, "but now? With Beacon gone, Haven in shambles and greater dark forces arrayed against mankind, we can ill-afford any softness. The way things look, they'll get a lot worse before we'll have any chance to make them better, and those kids?" — she pointed at the pit with her thumb, where the first Grimm have appeared — "They need to shape up, and fast, because they'll be on the frontlines sooner rather than later. I'm not here to coddle anybody, Headmistress, least of all the students."

"Idiot!" The woman shrieked, running forward and grabbing Regina's shoulder, pulling her back so that she stood side by side with the girl, raising her spear to protect the both of them. She looked at Regina.

A Grimm Start

"Everyone! Away from the walls! Get to where we fell in to make sure none of the crawlers get the drop on us from above!"

Though she couldn't quite make out the Grimm crawling down the walls, the skittering noises and vague movement at the furthest edge of her vision were clues enough. With a swish of her hand, she brought forth all her Wisps, making them converge at her feet, slanted towards her. With a burst of Gravity Dust, she flings herself across the room to where they had landed, leaving the open passage above her. With a whirling flourish of hands and spheres, she sends Wisps on a crash course with several Beowolves. Not really specialized for those types of attacks but it would probably annoy and harass them for the others to do their thing.

Forrest nodded his head, listening to the ideas of some of the others and positioning himself accordingly. Nadeshiko's words seemed so... wrong. The assessment of the others was correct. They must stand together or fall apart.

"I am a close-ranged spec-"

And then the monsters emerged from the dark and his soul wailed with hate and hunger. Thoughts of strategy, camaraderie and rationality became muddled under a dark pool of rage. He burst to the side in a flash of blurring green as his armor propelled him, not at all fast enough to go unseen, nowhere near that, but plenty quick. He straffed the horde and the grim, firing into their flesh, drawing them towards him with fury and regret.

His soul knew where every one of the hateful monster-spawn were as he zigzagged to one side of the crowd, blasting away, never staying in one spot. Fire, reload, fire, reload. Inside his head there was screaming, and he couldn't know whether or not it was coming out of his throat. Kill the Grimm, Kill the Grimm, Kill the Grimm.

Lina didn't have to be told twice. She jumped back in a single leap towards the area Sini had indicated, courtesy of never skipping leg day, and scowled. Seems like some people weren't getting the memo, since that guy with the horns and helmet decided to just start spazzing out and attacking the Grimm like some sort of psycho.

"You slap them with your orbs, I'll kick in their teeth... or... something else," Lina said to Commander Sini.

Jumping forward with a spin, she delivered a roundhouse kick to one of the sufficiently large-sized boulders that were sitting around. Headmaster Gale collapsing a goddamn mountain onto them at least had one perk, she supposed. Sending the giant rock flying, she tried to use it to bowl over the Grimm that managed to avoid Sini's magical balls.

Naia sprung into action - literally, jumping off the ground and landing on the back of a Beowolf.

She stabbed it with Great White and activated the, sending electricity coursing through its body. Its body immediately dissolved, and Naia landed on the cave floor in a crouch, grinning delightedly as she used her trident to vault towards another Beowolf.

(She briefly considered activating her Semblance, but decided against it; she might need to use it later if things got dire.)

"I guarantee great things will happen!" Verina assured Lina with a thumbs-up of her armored hand. There was some tension in their group; some of them were not on board with teamwork - weird notion, that - and some were a little too eager to meet the Grimm, and not in a good sense of "eager".

The Grimm appeared and she couldn't help but be excited. Finally, a chance to affirm the power of Ginkishi. Someone out there was screaming bloody murder and she caught Naia throwing herself into a fray. Lina and Sini were pulling back, seemed. "I'll keep the big one distracted!" She pointed her pointer finger at the crawler Grimm on the ceiling before leaping up into the air. "Witness me, Lina-san! I'll keep my promise!" Verina threw her arms back...

And then the exhausts on her limbs exploded with flame, propelling her towards the crawler at breakneck speeds and right up into its face - Ginkishi's preferred range. "Kurae!" She exclaimed once she was in range and swung her fist right into its kisser; her arm strengthened by both the mechanism of the exhaust and her own Semblance, guaranteeing massive damage if connected. Considering the sheer speed of Verina's approach, maybe she could take the Grimm by surprise.

"Back off," Regina growled, shrugging the kimono woman off. "This ain't my first time spelunking!"

Regina crouched, then sprung. She was right up there in front with Naia in an instant, Regulus stretching out to grab a Beowolf by the scruff of its neck. She reeled in, Denebola outstretched to deliver the nastiest flying kick with the full weight of her body behind it.

The first hit was more than enough to kill it, but Regina leaped off from the same point of contact. Still aerial, she reeled back her fist and launched it, striking again with a crack like a gunshot. The force sent the Beowolf tumbling in an effort to disrupt its neighbors before it faded. Regina landed as her arm returned to her, just in time to plant her hand on the ground for balance.

Come at me, boys. I'm itchin' to test out the new railgun.

Regina lowered her goggles, braced her shoulder with her left hand and pointed Regulus's finger at another Beowolf, one thrown off balance by the dead, fading body crashing into it. Regina slowly stepped back, sensors in her goggles tracking her target until—

"Bang."

Just as Regina said it, her finger gun fired like a real gun; propelling a Dust round into the Beowolf's mask. Best of all, Regulus's gun gave off no smoke—but that didn't stop Regina blowing her finger like a gunslinger does to the barrel of their gun.

"Always wanted to do that."

Joe listened to Sini and assumed the position with her and the team, which turned out to be quite the smart move when the Grimm finally made their entry after lurking in the shadows - Joe kept a calm head and regarded the people present in this engagement. Sini was taking a position of command, which was good - someone needed to though he would make moves to guarantee it would be him.

Some mediocre person had shouted witness me, and all told there was more of interest to witness.

Such as the monsters, and methods of not dying here.

Joellen slashed down a Beowulf as it approached, the greatsword moving deceptively easily through the air, his muscles very clearly doing their work as he engaged with the Grimm...though he noticed something about Forrest.

Was he...going nuts over there?

He kept the formation, hoping that Forrest would not run off on his own. Holding his sword, he grinned somewhat audaciously, looking up at the larger Grimm, "I've got a pretty powerful cannon on hand, I'm curious to see whether it could take down that giant thing."

He then slashed through several Grimm that approached him, the blade's size and force just as well carrying it through these enemies.

From Out Of The Darkness

Forrest kept straffing around, almost running sideways in a circle as he always zipped over to flank a monster and never allowed himself to be flanked. Forrest saw a straggler, slightly bigger and spikier than the others and knew that it offered some measure of coordination to the rest. Forrest rushed around to end such thing.

Bark blow the beowulf out at the knee, causing the beast to stumble and Forrest dived in. It swung with a wide claw and Forrest blocked with his left, grabbing the offending limb. Bark turned into Bite and the chain axe swung up into the arm, roaring and messily dismembering the monster.

The monster wasn't dead yet and neither was its arm. Forrest brought the limb down on the beasts head, bashing it over the head three times like a club. It was only after the third time he heard the satisfying crunch of a skull cracking wide open. He had to stop as both improvised weapon and prey began to dissolve.

The cinder and ash of the Grimm did not simply float up and dissipate around Forrest. Instead, it was sucked into the seams of his armor like a vacuum and his aura intensified even further. It wasn't enough, it never was for him. He needed more, to kill more Grimm to fuel him so that he may kill more Grimm.

Bark & Bite folded up completely as he slipped behind back, backpedaling from the approaching pack of lesser beowulves. Not her to avenge their leader, he thought, but attracted by his ceaseless hatred of their kind. Out came The Olive Branch, unboxing itself into rocket launcher form and he fire into the cluster. He'd dive right back, Bite out and finishing off any survivors, feeding.

And wanting more.

Kill the Grimm.

On a lighter note, diva popstar Pepper Spearmint's hit single "Spicy Cold Love" was just blaring inside his helmet the whole time he having his little spaz fest.

Sini-rgy

"A cannon...hmm..."

She looked around, assessing the situation now that the combat had truly begun, idly swiping at some approaching Beowolves to knock them back as they got closer. Eyes darting towards the walls, Joellen, the mute shark girl, Lina, the other people and the empty passage above, and finally her own hands.

"Lina, what can your weapon do? Joellen, stick close and switch to cannon mode. Everyone, be ready to do anything at a moment's notice! I think I have a plan that might just take them all out in one quick swoop!"

Sini's mind raced, keeping a careful watch over how the others fought. Her face went sour at that one guy dashing around gleefully. Clearly, he wasn't going to be doing much listening. That shark girl had an electric trident. That girl with the grapple, and another with a suit of armour speaking in that weird language...

This could work...

"Why are you talking like that!? And where are you even from!?!" Lina shouted at Verina, landing from her kick and slightly nodding as the boulder she kicked ahead cleared some of the tunnel.

"I hit things," Lina said to Sini, taking a few steps back to once again be closer to the center instead of exposed in the open. "I hit them really hard. If I can't hit them, I mix dust in my guitar for different types of grenades." As she said that, she brought her guitar out front again, and started to strum it wildly again.

"I've got plenty of basic dust types for the main event, and then I sprinkle in some rifts for secondary types if they need a little help. Fire's always a good primer." Her playing started to pick up into something that was somehow even faster and louder than ever. The core chamber of the guitar started to glow red as the dust started to accumulate.

THE RUINS

Idiots. That was all that went through the samurai's mind as she spun, wielding the spear to make it a dervish of death, cutting at tendons, eyes and throats. She was trained to kill humanoids, true. But Grimm? One must know how to kill Grim.

She felt pride fill her as she slashed through another throat-a weapon that was precise, rather than overmade and loud. Probably a rarity in these parts. She froze at the feeling of heat, triggering an...unseemly memory, however, the beowolf fangs inches from her face brought her back and she returned to the dervish of death that she was.

Regina took a few steps back and glanced towards the rest of the group where Sini seemed to want to suggest a strategy. She spotting a brief show and tell with Lina's guitar.

"Nice weapon," Regina said. "Let me get a good look at it later!"

A Beowolf broke through the pack and leaped straight at Regina. Regina raised her left arm in defense—the Beowolf broke its fangs on a solid metal arm courtesy Regina's Semblance. Regina grinned. She grabbed the Beowolf by the scruff of its neck, uncurling Regulus and slamming the Beowolf into the ground with so much force it left a small impact crater.

"There's your wrestling throw, Verina!" Regina shouted. "Show me yours later~"

Regina whirled around, Regulus bending like a sling and tossing the Beowolf at the wall, where it impaled itself on the spines of the nearest wall-crawling menace making its way towards the group. Regina backed up again and looked for Sini.

"We can't let the wall-crawlers close in—we should make 'em come down on our terms, break their ambush and take back the advantage. Orb girl, what're you thinkin'?"

Sini-rgy

"Lina, that's perfect. Go for a grenade mix of mostly Wind Dust, but a bit of fire isn't bad either."

Excitement gripped her, the plan forming perfectly visualized in her mind. She turned to Joellen, curt with her words.

"Joellen, set up the cannon right next to me and aim at the center of the room."

The girl who had asked her what her plan was was integral to her plan to deal with the crawlers.

"Grappling girl, bring down the wall crawlers, in the center of the room of possible."

The girl who never spoke would be key to the bridging step between the setup and the final phase of action.

"Mute shark girl, charge up as much electricity in that trident of yours as possible and get ready to use it all in one big go in the center of the room on my command!"

With that all said and done, she cupped her hands so it would reach everyone.

"Everyone else, distract and herd the Grimm into a tight bunch at the center of the room! As soon as the mute girl gets enough charge, get the hell away!"

"One firestorm, comin' right up," Lina exclaimed, throwing up her left hand towards Sini. The middle and ring fingers were held down by the thumb while the index and little fingers pointed up sharply to make a horned sign with her hand. She threw her head back and rammed her hand back onto the guitar, this time changing things up so that wind dust began mixing in with the fire.

"Hope your blueberries are tough, cause they're going to get one hell of a kick if you keep them out there!"

At Sini’s order, Naia ducked out of the main action to preserve Great White’s charge. Semi-safe, she pressed her trident’s button and didn’t let go.

She saluted Sini to signal that she was ready whenever Sini gave her the go-ahead.

"That ain't gonna be easy," Regina said. "It's Regina, by the way."

Regina stepped forward, glancing back and forth, lost in thought. The mask-wearing guy and the kimono girl were more than enough of a distraction right now, though they weren't exactly co-operating so much as they were coincidentally helping. What was the best way to approach this?

Regina fired her arm to the nearest Grimm on the wall, striking its leg and snapping the bone with a nasty crunch before she grabbed it. She dug her heel into the ground and pulled—slipping, Denebola scraping rock and burrowing deeper, while Regina felt both herself and her arm groaning from the strain. Regina grit her teeth and roared.

The Grimm slipped, pulled like a ragdoll by its broken leg. Regina's arm bent like a sling once more and tossed it from one wall to another, deliberately into one of its own kind. They both tumbled down, locked in each other's spines as they rolled down the incline where the wall met the floor. Neither were dead yet, but neither would be escaping entanglement any time soon.

"Two down." Regina looked above. "Verina, you got that one? Kill it or bring it down here!"

Joellen moved to the designated spot, pointing his greatsword at the center of the area as Sini said - he was drawing blanks when it came to plans right now, and he hoped this girl's plan didn't explode in their faces. He promptly readied a Dust Cartridge as his greatsword shifted to cannon mode. He wondered what the teachers were doing up there - was there any plan about people potentially dying down here?

Joe himself didn't really spend much thought on that at first, but now...now it got him thinking.

"Alright, I'm in position." There was time however to do all that. This was not that time.

THE RONIN

The samurai frowned, noticing the crawlers as a short, throwing dagger shot out from her wrist, catching it in her armored hands as she turned, throwing it as the blade pierced into its ankle. The grim would be staggered just in time for her to recover, plunging her spear into another Beowolf.

Another slammed into her, knocking her on her back as the spear clattered to the ground, its jaws opened wide before a large shuriken was in her hand and she slashed open its throat, kicking the body off of it as a short, pointed dagger fell into her bandaged hands.

She fought on, preparedto prove herself better than all of these others. She did not need a crutch as they did.

Forrest, admittedly, had not been coordinating with his fellows as he had previously thought he should have, back a few minutes ago when he had thought about thinking very much. His hate for the grimm drove him to keep killing as he felt them on every side of them and his soul sang with satisfaction. His aura grew brighter and brighter for the feast.

Herd them to the center

He heard these orders though and he followed like a good soldier. He sheathed Force Of Nature just briefly, pulling out The Olive Branch and firing rockets into the ceiling away from his allies. The slithering horrors up there died, yes, as he sent the stalactites they were one falling down among the wolves, killing a few more of them.

He shouted, vocalizing his hate wordlessly and drew them by the sound. It wasn't his way to standstill but he would have to. Running through the horde, he hopped from one stalagmite towards a larger complete column in the middle. A shot of The Olive Branch blew away the middle, leaving him with a platform that he hopped on top of.

He stood atop his little hill near the center, shouting challenges at the horde, beckoning beowulves to clamber up towards him. Out came a glowing pistol, Thunderwood, in one hand and a shard of ice dust in the other. He crushed the latter, causing it to be absorbed by his armor, hardening it further. As long as that lasted, even the blows of the monsters lessened for a time.

"Is up here 'out off the way'!?" He shouted in a moment of coherence. Then he turned back to his hate foes, channeling his aura into the gun itself to fire upon them. Charging up blasts, he kept them at bay until even his frantic pace couldn't do it and they were upon him. Thunderwood transformed into a pair of glowing brass knuckles, and he went to punching the shit out of them.
