That takes the simulation aspect too far. It's supposed to be at least a vaguely plausible historical setting to be imersed in, not a glorified theme park of cool attractions.

It frustrates me the most it's set in England. Why not just set it entirely in Ireland where historically the Norse had a strong presence. Or in Byzantium among the Varangian Guard. Or in early Russia fighting for territory to settle with the Mongols. Or just in any of the Scandanavian countries, because Odin forbid we step outside of comfortable Western America/Europe more than once.

Despite Ubisoft claim that they want to represent the Norse with more nuance rather than how pop culture portrait them as, they actually still sticking to the typical image of the Norse rather than move them out of pop culture comfort zone.

We have a new episode of Miscellaneous Myths. Today's episode is about the Western Zodiac, the stories behind the constellations, and how they changed over the years.

[up] Considering how I like the stars, and star myths this is definitively a favorite. But now I'm curious as to why the Greeks though Piscies was a pair of fish over a stag? I'm certain they had a few mythical Deer running around.

I also suspected that Herc was connected with the Zodiac in some form what with the 12 labors and some of them being very specific references to them.

I also wodner if Ophiuchus is considered more Parazodiacal in astrological contexts

Red's description of her first experience with country stars sounds like the origin story of a star themed superhero/villain.

This week's episode is a Trope Talk episode: Greatest Fears. Red talks about "greatest fears" episodes and how they're a good way to give further characterization, specifically by showing us what the character fears most and having the character confront said fear.

Great episode. I was reminded of a quote by Riku from Kingdom Hearts 2 after hearing Red talk about Hawkgirl and primal fears, with said quote being "It's because of who is lurking inside it" as a response to Mickey wondering why people are afraid of the dark.

I bring it up because seemingly simple fears can often be only one part of a greater fear. For instance, one may be afraid of the dark because with darkness comes a decrease in awareness, or at least one type of awareness.

And that fear of the loss if awareness can then be tied into something like the fear of powerlessness, and more classically, the fear of the unknown (though these two can also be complimentary since something being unknown means you don't have much power over it).

On the flip side, darkness in a sense can be revealing as the temporary loss or decline in one sense can lead to one focusing on their other senses. Suddenly you notice things you didn't notice before since one may have been concerned only with outward appearances, and indeed, introspection and the self realization of who one truly is can be a fear in and of itself.

Don't catch you slippin' now.

goddamn is this hilarious[lol]

The funniest moments for me are when Susano'o apparently outlines Dionysus' punishments to the Aetheneans and Tezqalipoca apparently raining jaguars down in response to the Jade Emperor's Sons becoming suns.

So China pretty much have one adaptation of the story every years and some of them make a lot of changes to the source material like making the White Bone Demon be Sun Wukong crush before he been sealed away ( which changed her entire story to the point she have an happy ending), the China Emperor relationship with Xuanzang, the monkeys in Flower Fruit Mountain getting tired of their immortality. There even a sequel where the main antagonist is the Buddha evil twin brother.

That story really should have been called “The Demon Mirror” or something, the actual titular character barely even shows up.

[up]That always kind of struck me as odd as well.

Speaking of The Snow Queen, I recently read a book that is an LGBTQ+ take on the story called "The Raven and the Reindeer" by T. Kingfisher, and I really enjoyed it. The Snow Queen definitely featured in more than one scene in that book as well.

One of the adaptations apparently equated Gerda's journey the seasons, passing through Spring (the flower witch), Summer (the newlywed princess), Autumn (the bandits) and Winter (the old ladies in warm huts and the Snow Queen's palace).
