5 - It tries hard, just so painfully hard, to come off as intimidating and edgy but with every ounce of juvenile manger they pour in, they achieve the complete opposite effect.
Axis of Advance - Deceivers Purged (Lyrics)
Paints a picture of pretty unpleasant things, and a pessimistic worldview in general, but nothing that explicit or profane enough is present to push it higher than an 8.
Spiral out, keep going.10. One of the darkest songs I've ever heard about obsession
Union Underground-Revolution Man: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vUu5uziu9Kc
There are references to war, violence and use of drugs, but in general the lyrics are vague, 8.
Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds - Cannibal's Hymn:

Spiral out, keep going.7.Will likely be a 5 if not for the reference to cannibalism.
Kelsea Ballerini - Secondhand Smoke
Like Family Portrait, this song seems to be addressing the "growing up in broken home" issue. Unlike Pink's song, this clearly takes the POV of a teenager, not a child. It's filled with juvenile angst and the word choice makes it feel detached from the ongoing events, giving the impression that the situation POV is in is not that bad as they're painting it. That they're exaggerating things just because they've ran out of things to angst about at the moment, making the overall song not as heartwrenching as the subject matter allows, 5.
Primordial - Traitors Gate.

Spiral out, keep going.9.5 - Every time I hear this song, I can't help but think about the usurpation of Gaddafi during the Arab spring and his brutal execution at the hands of civilian rebels.
9. Hardcore gore and disturbing stuffs as well as having a really cult-like ending.
Sia - "Chandelier"

The song addresses alcoholism and a wastrel lifestyle, but it's rather ambiguous whether it actually bothers the POV or not, 6.
Tom Waits - Make it Rain.
Spiral out, keep going.Edit: Uhm, what? The singer is clearly shown to be deeply ashamed of her alcoholism: "I'm gonna fly like a bird through the night, feel my tears as they dry" ..../ "Sun is up, I'm a mess" / "Gotta get out now, gotta run from this" / "Here comes the shame, here comes the shame"
5. Typical break up song.
Carrie Underwood - "Blown Away"

Lines like
"I'm gonna live like tomorrow doesn't exist
Like it doesn't exist
I'm gonna fly like a bird through the night"
push it into the opposite direction, hence the ambiguity.
Spiral out, keep going. It's a 6 or 7. It's a song about a girl who grew up with an alcoholic father who was possibly abusive. The girl wishes for a storm to destroy the house she grew up.

The lyrics are a bit unclear. They hint at some vaguely unpleasant things, but they're all in the past, right now the POV is simply enjoying swimming in the night, 3.
Kenny Rogers - Just Dropped In (To See What Condition My Condition Was In).
Spiral out, keep going.5.5 - Sounds like some drifter/junkie slowly losing it but every reads in such a jaunty and vague way to feel like it's trying to be particularly hard-edged about its content.
8. Pretty dark
Megadeth: Hook In Mouth: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AFRDimvVimw
7. More explicit in violence than your typical anti-authority song.
Phil Collins - "Another Day In Paradise"
edited 29th Nov '17 5:42:49 PM by shatterstar
Addresses the problems of homeless people and the society's indifference to them, 7.
Spiral out, keep going. It's a 6. I think it's about sex but it's too vague for me to know further.

5. The lyrics imply the singer is about to do something terrible, but doesn't specify what it is, meaning that it could be anything from murdering someone to shit on their neighbor's lawn.

Spiral out, keep going.7. Some pretty dark theme of insanity, denial and madness but too vague to rate it any higher.
Taylor Swift ft. The Civil Wars - "Safe & Sound"
Gives the feeling that it's describing a scene where a person is comforting their dying friend and\or lover, but the lyrics are rather vague. But even if we don't take the second verse at its face value, it's still pretty dark song, 8.
Tom Waits - Alice:
Spiral out, keep going.Looks dark but a little vague overall. 6.
6 - In stark contrast to the music, the lyrics of this track more or less edge around their angst with some confusingly unspecific content that comes off as odds with their own intended impact.
Order From Chaos - There Lies your Lord, Father of Victories
9. It's got some pretty harsh lyrics about being murdered, so I'll give it that.
Hollywood Undead - Undead
