Star ratings determine base stats as well as a few other things. For example, a 5* Chrom will be stronger than a 4* Chrom.

Okay. Dang, wish I could have had 4-star Olivia along with Marth and Corrin... but that's okay.

So does that mean that using the badges to add stars to a unit will just give them a boost to their base stats and basically retroactively make, say, a 3-star into a 4-star? That's pretty generous.

I've done my first and second pulls. What I remember from round one is 4 star Oboro and Gordin plus 3 star Nino, all of whom have been highly productive members of my team. Second pull had 4 star M!Robin and 4 star Tharja, who is now on my team despite my dislike of her, since she's my highest star red.

My real goal is to get Lyn, though.

One note I'll make- Failing absolutely everything else, saving up a unit's SP to upgrade their weapons can make a huge difference.

With a Steel Lance, my Sharena is a Glass Cannon, for example.

We should probably start sharing friend IDs. Apparently having friends lets you get Hero Feathers. It's in the bottom left of the Home screen. Mine is 1177530259. Sterok as usual.

I'm not sure how to access my friend code...

Tap the monolith on the bottom-left of the home screen then tap the magnifying glass on the resulting menu.

It should be visible once you selects the stone to the lower left, then the search tab. It's also where you can Enter Friend's Id.

Went ahead and did my first summon. No 5-star heroes, but got a 3-star M!Robin, then 4-star of Shanna, Oboro, M!Corrin and Merric. Basically replaces me entire team, though leaves me with 3 melee and 1 ranged with no debuffer. Their raw attacks means I probably don't need a debuffer, though, and Oboro can kinda cover that later. Flier means not going 2 melee/2 ranged is less of a big deal, as well.
