I believe it's a relatively recent thing. Within the last thirty years or so.
Nepotism certainly helped in making Atlas collapse. But it's very much like the rise and fall of empires. It starts off well as long as someone strong is in control, but when weak rulers succeed each other, the whole thing falls apart pretty quickly.
Atlas collapsed largely due to the following Factors
Placing all their eggs in Pandora: Unlike Hyperion or Dahl, Pandora seemed to be Atlas' BIG colonization project throwing all their resources into the planet... and the planet's season changed to DEATH and 80% of their work went to shit
Incompetent Leadership: Whether through Nepotism or just general lack of Standards Atlas' leaders are referenced as being about as dumb as Rehoboam 'King Solomon's son' or lacking any principles like Caligula 'IE How Steele ran the Lance
IE Knoxx tells them NOT to screw Athena over... one of them decides Athena killing her sister would be funny for no other reason then they can
Beheading: The second aspect of bad leadership is when you finally piss off your more capable underlings
Steele and Knoxx's deaths left the Lance Leadership n shambles
Athena, Claptrap and the Vault Hunters slaughtering any exec/commander, pretty much left Atlas in an Admiral Mikey scenario... everyone left in Charge was not qualified to run anything and the company imploded
Atlas might have been able to recover if they could have taken advantage of the Iridium rush but due to the above factors their competitors shot ahead and Atlas lost out on potential recovery money due to having no one in position to actually get it done
Hopefully the new Atlas won't make the same mistakes.
If we see one of the second generation's vault hunters die, I hope Axton isn't that one. We already lost one Commando.
Their players who are attracted to men would never forgive Gearbox if they did
Also, I don’t think anyone actually cares that much about Axton?
Well I’m sure he’s got fans.
"I am Alpharius. This is a lie."I kinda liked him just for the casual bisexuality. Like, nobody makes a big deal about it; he just flirts with everyone and it’s not treated as weird.
We exist!
Axton was my first character in BL2 and my favourite of the four starting ones.
That too.

“You can’t be an important and life-changing presence for some people without also being a joke and embarrassment to others.” -Mark Manson. It’s why I recommended they should play up his sexual interests to make him more the “romantic” of the Vault Hunters.
Make him a fun-loving Casanova who’s DTF if you ask him.

"I am Alpharius. This is a lie."Axton's pretty much the only VH dood that's in anyway conventionally attractive (I mean no disrespect to the lovers of like-a-fist-with-hair-stapled-to-it), so he's also the only VH dood I've ever seen fans express their PSL for.

I have seen some Zer 0 lust at least probably due to his mysterious nature & androgynous physique (amazingly enough if you go the games fan-fic page, while it might not be much Zer 0 has the most fics involving a romance with him in comparison to the other Hunters).
Then there’s Krieg who is really good romance-bait.

"I am Alpharius. This is a lie."Zero has the "Tali advantage" in that anyone can imagine him/her/they/it to look however they want to under that mask.
Axton is the only conventionally attractive male hunter (heh) now that Roland's gone, unless you count Handsome Jack's doppelganger. Zane's definitely Silver Fox material though.
lets Not make killing the Soldier Class analogue a thing...
I mean yeah its 2 for 3 if you count Wilhem
Shit
He's doomed.
Wouldn’t that mean Moze is next in B4?
"I am Alpharius. This is a lie."She will die tightly gripping her rifle so the fresh-faced recruit that stood behind her but was only issued a clip of ammunition will have something to shoot with.

Personally, I think of the BL 2 cast, Kreig is the most LIKELY to be killed off. He's well-liked by the fandom, doesn't have too much relationship to the others, is already kind of a tragic figure, and, also, the one who could be killed off and cause the least internal disruption between the remaining characters which could be a way to have the shock without paying for it too much.
I doubt Zer 0 unless they reveal his character and backstory before or during. Maya is needed as a Siren. Salvador has... very little going on meaning his death wouldn't have impact. Gaige could be impactful but I personally think it would disrupt what she could potentially add by staying on. Axton isn't well liked enough, one of the ONLY bisexual men in the protagonists rn, and I think he still has too much potential to add otherwise if he lives.
I only wonder what happened to Timothy, probably in permanent using since he’s got the face of a very hated man
Speaking of Timothy I like to imagine he went through the battles of TPS completely inept, having no inherent skill like the others so he’s just tripping and stumbling while firing his guns wildly, probably only survived because of his Hyperion sponsored technological advantage

Try imagining how far the universe extends! Keep thinking about it until you go insane.I would have vouched for Salvador dying, because of Big Guy Fatality Syndrome.
I'd imagine Timothy's only saving grace is that he's not wearing a mask, so he can't be the real Jack. A slim chance of people catching onto that thread.

He meets Zer0, thinks "Hey that guyindividual's pretty cool. Also the mask stops me from looking like Jack..." and goes with that.

Oh I'm reminded, there is a fic that pairs Timothy & Angel.
Now that is one awkward pairing. Seriously that's like that episode of American Dad where Hailey dates her dads body double.
"I am Alpharius. This is a lie."
Didn't Atlas implode from its own issues?
