The Sports Festival didn't really meaningfully expand on anything though. The manga skipped over some fights because they were really short to save time. And the anime, because it has more time showed those fights, but they were all basically as short and straight-forward as implied.
I'm not really sure what you mean, especially since Persona 5 just came out and glorified Phantom Thieves.
I mean, it's just a cool name. Personally, I find Monoma's schtick funny. It helps that he's not around that often like Mineta or Bakugo, so it doesn't wear on the nerves as much.
Phantom Thieves are like Japanese Robin Hoods. Whenever one pops up in a Japanese work, they're always anti-heroes, at worst.
I don't know about that - there's Phantom Thief B, who, while hardly the worst villain in his series, is most definitely not a hero.
Granted, that's just one example, but I do think it proves that "always" is rather hyperbolic.

Oh God! Natural light! Is it like in Metroid where to the Japanese being a Bounty Hunter is just a cool thing to call Samus but they don’t want her doing any of the morally ambiguous stuff that term implies like hunting sentient beings for profit?
"I am Alpharius. This is a lie."Typically anti-heroes at worst, then. Doesn't really change my point either way they the name Phantom Thief isn't inherently negative.

Well yeah, I'll agree with that.
I will say that it's a bit odd for a law-abiding hero to use the motif, though. I suppose it makes sense, considering the nature of his power, but still.

Oh God! Natural light!Phantom Thieves are Robin Hoods in general with rarely an exception. Arsene Lupin helped people by stealing from corrupt rich and making them get caught via Holmes and/or the authorities eyes. Though he's not completely altruistic as he keeps what he steals.

Every accusation by the GOP is ALWAYS a confession.I tend to think more of the Kaito Kid of Magic Kaito / Detective Conan fame. Puts on big elaborate heists, though doesn't typically keep what he steals, just gives it back soon as he's gotten away as he's after a specific item.
Really, "thief" doesn't actually apply since he's not stealing the power from the original user, and he can only use it temporarily.
Maybe in the regard that he probably won't be asking people's consent to touch them (certainly not villains) but he'll be (presumably) be doing good with them.

Hero names don't have to pertain to the user's power. It can just be a thing they like.
Song of the SirensIt’s most likely just a cooler way of saying he copy’s powers.
He steals them even if it’s not exactly correct.
"I am Alpharius. This is a lie."Yeah, but being overly analytical is half the fun of discussion (he says somewhat hypocritically).

He is no AFO after all-
Uni catWhen it comes to power-copying/stealing, I think there’s a scale that’s approximately Monoma to All For One.
Rogue is somewhere in between.
Oh God! Natural light!I found Joke pretty funny, and as a character it's amusing to see her interactions with Eraser Head.
I'd have expected Monoma's costume to be full of utility for using other people's Quirks, because you never know what kind of Quirk you'll end up with; unless you work in a team, like he did in the Sports Festival.
I just realized how much I'd like to see Monoma and Deku working together.
I'd expect the opposite. The sheer diversity of Quirks would make someone with a power like his trying to plan for anything in particular, or even broad strokes, highly impractical.
Edited by LSBK on Jul 22nd 2018 at 9:40:09 AM
Yeah, his Copy power seems like something that would be very difficult to use considering you have to take the Quirk of someone who already knows how to use it and then figure out how to use it better than them in the span of five minutes.
Then again, he was able to borrow multiple Quirks, right?
Using the Quirks doesn't seem to be a problem for him. The point I was making is that he'd have no way of knowing the Quirks of everyone around him in a normal in the field situaton, and making his costume let him exploit multiple Quirks when they're so varied sounds unfeasible.

Monoma has always seemed to me to be someone who really needs a dedicated partner or piece of technology to base his fighting style around.
His power also seems pretty well suited for non-hero things or disaster relief. Because like AFO a lot of skill based Quirks are useless to take. And in a 1 v 1 fight he's probably not going to be able to use the enemy's Quick as well as them.
If there are any hero's with a top tier teleportation Quirk or something than can easily be used on a large scale I think he'd make an excellent person to work with to cover more ground.
Ditto if you had someone like Momo who specialized in producing something valuable with their Quirk which had their stamina as a limiting factor.
I think both teleportation and Momo are probably bad examples, since those sound like they both require immense amounts of practice to use precisely enough to be helpful.
Yeah, Yaomomo needs to know the exact molecular makeup of the things she's making, which is what the book that's part of her costume is for.
Song of the SirensThat aspect reminds me of another character...it's not relevant anymore though.
YO. Rules of the Internet 45. Rule 45 is a lie.
I know what happens, but some of your theories are pretty close to the actual results.
Hmmm, i wonder if they will expand on some characters that didn't get focus in the manga like they did in the Sports Festival
