The series started with I Am Not a Serial Killer and has pages for Mr. Monster and I Don't Want To Kill You. A new novella, Next of Kin, and the next book, the first in a new trilogy, The Devil's Only Friend, has been released.

It's an interesting concept. The protagonist is an adolescent obsessed with death and murder, and showing a number of the classic signs of a psychopath, from setting random fires to torturing animals. Then, he runs into his first demon... from there, he channels his unique abilities into battling these creatures. It's cleverly done in my opinion. I'm looking forward to the new books, which I have on order.

I've just started reading Book 6 now after trying out Book 1 and getting sucked into Book 2 and 3. Book 4 was alright and Book 5... I'm conflicted over still. Anyway, the tension for the series has cut with each book as I noticed a common trend.

Any of the danger John face feels more hollow to me now because I fear The Withered will never actually go all out on him specifically as an antagonist and is the main foe. Crowley in the first one worked well with that, but then when he realizes it's John, he stops fighting. That's fine, we're at the start and I like this touch with how it shows he cares. Then new villain appears who keeps trying to recruit John so he can get information out of him. Okay, he did at least outright kidnap John and challenged John to control himself in new was. Third book, yet another goddamn one trying to get John to join them. Then in the fourth, The King wants to recruit John the entire time, which at this point killed my tension as I felt John isn't in any danger. I mean, any. Then Book 5, we have one who isn't a threat at all and the other is influenced by other people's desires and so doesn't ever actually threaten John himself. I'm tired of this. I want a supernatural foe who wants to hurt, even kill, John even upon realizing who John is. I don't want anymore mercy, weak willed, or "Join me!" stuff anymore! I WANT A PROACTIVE THREAT TO JOHN!

Yeah. I also really didn't like the whole "he's not really a psychopath, just emotionally repressed" twist in the third book. I read the interim novella. I don't think I'm up on the latest books. I like the concept of the series, but I agree that it was basically a good trilogy that has struggled more moving outside of the original trilogy.

That actually never bothered me because I came to that conclusion all the way back in Book 2. Or more, when working with theories surrounding sociopaths and psychopaths and so on those who aren't born that way can become that way due to broken home lives and survival stuff and blah blah blah. So I theorized that back then. It doesn't make him not that, just...well, eh, clinical stuff there complicated and heavily debated at times anyway.
