Karkat watched as Wander ran back into the Library to greet all the people in the boat. His optimism was annoying, but he had to commend him for it despite the circumstances. Then he turned his attention to John. I'VE BEEN HERE FOR FOUR DAYS, I PRETTY MUCH KNOW EVERYBODY. That was definitely a lie, but he wasn't going to admit that now. THERE'S BEN, SEIGA, YOSHIKA, VIOLA, PLAGUE KNIGHT, LUNE, CARO, UH... He waved his hand yp indicate he gave up. Karkat leaned against the wall, giving it some thought. It's true, John's god tier abilities were pretty special, and his fraymotifs could be useful...wait, did he bring any fraymotifs with him? Did he even need to bring them? Weren't they always a part of him or something? God, that was so confusing. To avoid having another headache, he thought about something else. When did John get a hammer that could stop time? Did he alchemize it when he wasn't looking? Or was that from a different point in time? Ben arrived. He said something about her not letting him down, but she had. Killing was supposed to be last resort. There were so many better things she could have done.

"oh, right. the possibility of alternate timelines are still there. well, i'm from the timeline where vriska's alive and we all won the game and created a new universe. why, are you from another timeline?" All this time, he thought Karkat was the one in his timeline.

Tired of givin' up the ghost
The boat docked at the library, which was visibly more low-tech on the outside than it had been yesterday, though still recognizable. John was talking with a grey-skinned alien (yep, definitely from a comic he didn't keep up with) and...some sort of orange muppet thing? They looked like they were having a moment.
"Looks like. Thanks, sir," he said to the boat driver who's name he'd admittedly not gotten as he floated off the vehicle.
He stopped just in front of the entrance and looked at Curly. "I'm going to ask about a few things, and then we can look for Jack. Sound like a plan?"

When the boat got to the library's dock, an orange blob with a comically oversized hat and shoes welcomed everyone to the library. Wander was living proof of what kind of strange things the city had to offer.
"See, Mirai? This is what I mean when I say this city is weird"
At the sight of such a creature, Rachel wondered if he was a muppet. That didn't make much sense to Rex. Then again, Mickey Mouse had appeared in the city just five days ago, so all bets were off.
"No, he's definitely an alien. I mean, he has to be, right?"
Rex entered the library since he wanted to do two important things: Fix his clothes, and ask Tairee something related to the previous incident with Jackson. He had a plan for this day's challenge but he wanted to make sure he wasn't going to screw over anyone else.
Seeing how he had never met a few of the people in the library—including what looked like another talking horse and a woman full of accessories—Rex decided to introduce himself to the tea party.
"You guys were busy while we were gone. Name's Rex, nice to meet you"
Meanwhile, Garrett was really pissed off at Tairee when she told him he couldn't send a message to the people back in his world. He approached the table and essentially asked for everyone there to write in the suggestion box that they wanted to contact their respective homeworlds.
"Yeah, I already asked about that. We can send messages to people back home buy only if we accept an even more difficult challenge" Rex remember how basically no one seemed to accept the offer and wondered if telling Garrett was a good idea. He wasn't exactly a heavy hitter so there was little he could do against, say, a giant sea serpent. But maybe Rex's plan could fix that "So far, everyone I've asked said it wasn't worth the trouble. I'm not really sure if I should accept the deal, the guy is sketchy and could throw anything our way"

Mirai's ears perked up when she heard Rex mention contacting home. She went straight to the suggestion box and put her request in without a second thought. It was only after doing this that she thought to go back and ask Rex a very important question.

Nails looked down at his walkie talkie and picked it up for a moment. "This is my walkie talkie, let's me talk with the rest of the militia and know what's happening. I wasn't paying much attention, sounds like... Something is going on at the theater? It doesn't sound urgent" Nails said, only catching the end of the conversation.
Frederick looked suspicious of Cole, still clearly not trusting him, or entirely believing him for that matter. "You guys keep calling him a demon; what makes you so sure he is? He doesn't look like any demon I know" Frederick asked Cole, his posture still on the defensive.
"I know about the type of demon he is from my universe" Nails answered for Cole, though notably did not elaborate the context of how he knew that. "He's called a Lord of Change. Basically they're super powerful magic trickster demons, all about lies, deception, illusions, plans within plans, that kind of stuff" the militia member explained.
"In fact, you know what? I have a theory" Nails added, and looked to Cole. "Have your powers ever hurt anybody like that before?" the militia member asked the spirit, leading them out the bar door.
Thomas jumped slightly and seemed quite surprised at Garrett's sudden, loud outburst. Miss Tairee did not jump, but did raise an eyebrow in idle thought. "Even the master thief has no care about staying quiet in the library? Everyone else I understand, but that one is legitimately surprising" Miss Tairee muttered to herself. Then she went back to typing.
Thomas, after calming down, heard some of the conversation going on, and lowered his eyebrows. He looked around for someone, and after not spotting them, thought for a moment, then turned and moved to the suggestion box as well. After writing down a quick note and putting it in the box, he then looked to Miss Tairee. "Do you know where Ben went? Younger boy, about this tall?" Thomas asked, holding his hand up to about Ben's height.
"Ben Tennyson? Sorry, I do not" Miss Tairee answered him in a slightly apologetic tone.
Thomas frowned slightly and turned back around, walking towards the others and looking around. "Did anybody see where Ben went?" Thomas questioned nobody in particular.

Cole lowered his gaze to the ground, picking at the wraps around his hands as he did, just silent as Frederick and Nails talked about OFB. It seemed as though Nails knew of the creature from his home, which gave the spirit some pause. OFB and Brother Marcus were from the same world, or at least Marcus thought they were. And both of them were...extreme. While he hadn't had a look inside Nails's mind yet, he seemed...frankly, too rational to be from the same place.
When Nails asked about his powers hurting people, Cole looked up at the man, blinking as he considered it, then looked back down, shaking his head slowly. "Not...not like that. M-most people get...upset, or sad, or angry, when they know I can see into them, but...it never hurt someone in their body before."

As they approached the Library, Curly nodded at the creature's question "Looks like it! At little different today though. Anyway, thanks for the lift and the help back on the balcony, it was nice meeting you" As they got off the boat, she turned to Lewis "Yeah, that makes sense. I wanted to check something out too"
Entering the Library, it looked rather busy today even with all the water surrounding it. Curly paused as she picked up the transmission from the militia channel. "Huh, apparently there's some sort of convention going on a the cinema from yesterday. I didn't know it was still in the city" she said, partially to Lewis and partially to herself.

Ben furrowed his brow and crossed his arms. "You didn't let me or anyone else down. That was a disaster no matter how you look at it," he told her. "Besides, if you are at fault then I'm just as much. I'm the one who stuck him to the sub with Stinkfly goop." He sighed. "Look. You can't just beat yourself up about it. Heroes make mistakes. I made mistakes, I made tons of mistakes while I was in this City. But what we need to do is work together, as a team, properly. If we're not working like a unit then we're gonna mess up and things are gonna go nuts," he told her.
He winced, looking at her apologetically. "It's hard. It's hard for me too, Eve," he assured her. "But don't worry. We'll get through this. And we'll make sure that everyone else is safe. All of us will. That's what the City Knights are for," he told her.
I can still hail the Horde even though the company has shamed us. Strength and Honor even if Blizzard has neither.

"yeah, but i couldn't have done it without everyone's help. after all, there's no 'i' in team! though, you haven't answered my question." John takes a deep breath. If he was from the timeline where everyone died, he would have to do a lot of explanation.

At the library docks, a fuzzy, orange creature enthusiastically greeted the group. Upon closer examination, he had a nice hat. Lune smiled and waved back at the creature as she entered the library with Rex and Mirai.
Mirai asked if they had all of the books. Before responding to Mirai, Lune tried to imagine a library with all of the books in the world. This theoretical city would probably be bigger than a city, or maybe bigger than a planet.
“Probably... You could ask Ms. Tairee if you want a particular book.”
As Lune looked around the library, she spotted a group of people sitting around a table and sipping tea. It seemed that they were having a lot of fun. Lune smiled and asked, “Room for one more?”

Miss Tairee idly groaned and lifted her glasses frame up to pinch her nose as Yoshika promptly shouted to be heard over others.
Thomas meanwhile, gave the little undead girl a simple nod. "Ah, thank you" Thomas said, then headed up the stairs to the second floor. He continued up the stairway just enough to get a look over all the bookcases and just how many there were, and realized Ben could be just about anywhere on that floor in the maze of bookshelves and Thomas wouldn't see him. So he started wandering through the aisles, occasionally calling out, "Ben?" Of course the fact that Ben was actually up on the fifth floor didn't help matters.
Out on the dock, Fastanook gave Curly a simple wave. "Bye bye!" Fastanook called out with a toothy smile.
"Yeah, I had a feeling that was the case. But you know who definitely can do that?" Nails asked rhetorically, and looked at Frederick. "A Lord of Change. I bet he's the one who did it, and then blamed it on him" the militia man explained his theory, and motioned at Cole.
"Well... It's still pretty much his word against the bird man's, isn't it?" Frederick counterpointed, still uncertain about all this.
"And haven't you noticed how much people in the city are scared of Ruckus and the shit they've done? You really think the guy in charge of that is trustworthy?" Nails pointed out as he stopped walking next to the sub. "Now come on, one of you get on top. We've gotta find a bigger sub to trade for or a tunnel that leads down" the militia member instructed them as he began to climb in.

WELL, BEFORE I ENDED UP HERE, I WAS ON THE METEOR WITH DAVE AND ROSE, FOR ABOUT...HALF A SWEEP LONG. Karkat explained. IN THAT TIMELINE, TEREZI KILLED VRISKA AND THE ONLY ONES ALIVE WERE HER, ME, DAVE, ROSE, GAMZEE, KANAYA, AND THE MAYOR.

B-but please go slowly if you can..."

Eve had never had trouble with fighting. She had never had issues with protecting others. Those issues were not what was distressing her.

It was how they would run, and plead, and cry, and she'd look at Torneo and he'd gesture. And just like that, their life was gone. It was the fact that she knew nothing about them. It was the fact, that all those years ago, she had thought it was a game.

Ben frowned. He didn't have a satisfactory answer to her questions. He stepped forward, pain tinged on his face. "Eve. You gotta listen to me. This is exactly the kind of thing the Writer boss guy wants us to do. He wants us to doubt ourselves and gloat over it like the psycho madman he is," he stated bluntly. "No matter what we do here... people are gonna die, because that sicko wants it, because he wants blood. All we can do is try and keep as many people safe as we can." His voice wavered at this, because as he was saying it he himself was fighting back tears.
"It's hard. It's really hard. I know, I've been having to live with it for a week. It's horrible, so many people getting hurt and dying...." He sniffled, trying to re-compose himself but finding it so difficult. "And on top of that so many so-called good guys kill people all the time because that's what they're used to, they can't help but do it because they don't... they don't know any other way of doing it," he muttered, looking down the library at the center, thinking immediately about the Militia and some of the other people who were trapped in the City too.
"B-but.... we can't stop! Now we definitely can't stop! We have to prove without a doubt that we are heroes, Eve. We have to show that we're better than that, and if we just give up, if we say it's not forgivable and all that stuff, then we're playing right into the Writer boss' hands, and we've gotta fight him every step of the way! And fight to protect everyone we can!" His hands clenched into fists, shaking slightly. "Because we're heroes, we're City Knights! And no one dies on our watch!"

It is about the earlier fight. The nature of Ephinea meant that travelers wouldn't live terribly long if they weren't willing to fight, let alone kill; even their primary healer Cheria knew that sometimes it would come to that, especially on a battlefield where circumastances could change quickly. There were still people they encountered, though, who showed no desire to fight - and in a way, Sophie understood why they chose not to take up arms. Fighting isn't for everyone.
The brown-haired boy's arrival was welcome aid; it meant that if Sophie failed to help the blon... Eve in some way, he might be able to. "You did what you could, given the circumstances," Sophie spoke, her face neutral. "Nobody could predict what would happen when our varied methods of attack hit one after another. The fact that you're worrying about this right now means that you find no pleasure in this... that you still have empathy for even your foes. Hold on to that."
