I didn't start til X so I have neither love or hate for the PS 1 era F Fs. Except Tactics because you can't go wrong with Tactics period. And XII I stopped halfway because the game kept freezing on me so I just stopped caring. Though that might be attributed to playing on a Phat with a slowly dying DVD drive.
After that I stopped caring period because, by the time I was in a position to have a lot of free time for gaming, I jumped ship to Atlus.
Y'know, Shinra may be incompetent as hell but you gotta give them props for moving the Junon cannon to Midgar, setting it up, and jerry rigging it so it uses mako energy as an energy source in a short amount of time. Plus it looks pretty cool.

Burning love!I started with VII from my brother's collection and worked my way through 8, 9, 10, 10-2, 13, and 13-2. Played Tactics, 1, and 2.
Never beat 9, 10, or 13 but I know the gist of what happens.
I'M MR. MEESEEKS, LOOK AT ME!The only Final Fantasy I ever got to play was VIII. I'd give the others a go but I want to when I can actually try to get into them on my own time and pace.
That being said, I've held a mostly neutral/okay view with every other final fantasy game. I don't really see a current point in being critical of a game I've yet to play till I play it, usually, with some exceptions (Hunt down the Freeman, being one).
I know on some end I should not take it personal but at the same time it felt a bit too tiresome and grating for yet another FF 8 jab. But that also stems from old wounds of fandom wars that is a rant I'll never get to and I've yet to completely get past.
But again, it was an otherwise good episode, and I'll be very curious to what will happen next even though I still have a basic rundown of how events happened in FFVII proper.
Final Fantasy IV, IX, XII, XIII with Final Fantasy IX having a special place in my heart because I used to play it all the time when I was a kid.
Trans rights are human rights. TV Tropes is not a place for bigotry, cruelty, or dickishness, no matter who or their position. They aren't really using Vincent that much.
Never trust anyone who uses "degenerate" as an insult. We're probably gonna get a lot of him next week, since that's likely when we get to the HOOOOOOOJOOOOOOO fight.
To be fair, the game doesn't use Vincent very much.
I've mentioned before that IX was my first FF game (and the only one I've beaten). I did manage to play a bit of VIII, but the discs I was playing it on were bad and would sometimes freeze. This culminated in getting stuck during a boss battle in the third disc. I suppose with the Switch ports I could not only replay IX and finish VIII but finally play VII if I wanted too, even though it's obviously a few decades too late for it to have the same weight.
As for potshots at VIII, I believe it was due to the different battle system, following the fan loved VII, and people finding Squall and (especially Rinoa) annoying.
One Strip! One Strip! My first was Final Fantasy III, by which I mean Final Fantasy VI because localizers suck. Final Fantasies II IV, III VI, Chrono Trigger, and Super Mario RPG were my gold standard for JRPGs before I was even old enough to know what the letters "JRPG" are supposed to stand for.
To this day, I still stand by FFVI and Chrono Trigger being the highest points of Square's work. On its own merits, VII's not bad by any measure. It's just not FFVI or Chrono Trigger. But while I don't really dislike FFVII, I have over the years developed a profound distaste for the sheer levels of hype surrounding it - both from the fandom and from SquareEnix themselves.

My Tumblr. Currently liveblogging Haruhi Suzumiya and revisiting Danganronpa V3.I did play Chrono Trigger years later via the OG Playstation's Final Fantasy Collection (why was Chrono Trigger even on something with that name?).
Yeah, it's pretty cool. That's why I picked up the DS version, and didn't even mind how the extra content wasn't all that great.
I regret I've never played VI though, but you named Super Mario RPG, which was actually my first full on RPG experience.
Shame I got into it right as pure turn based began to die out. I love just being able to sit and eat breakfast while playing a game, but most don't allow that anymore because it's all Action RPG's now.
One Strip! One Strip!Oof. You actually went through all that loading times.
Burning love!Eh. I tanked it like a boss.
That was the only era in my life where I not only owned something besides a Nintendo system, but two competing systems at the same time since I also had a N64 during that time.
One Strip! One Strip!Having been made by the same company in roughly the same style, Chrono Trigger and Mario RPG were often considered to be honorary Final Fantasy titles back in the Super Nintendo era. Indeed, it's never really been rare to hear people list Chrono Trigger as their favorite Final Fantasy title of all time (or, at least, near the top of the list) despite the game not technically being a Final Fantasy.
Mario RPG even contains a Bonus Boss, Culex, who is a loving homage to the Final Fantasy series. Culex is an uncomfortably angelic entity from outside of reality who you fight in an Amazing Technicolor Battlefield, both of which are common aspects of Final Fantasy's final bosses. He draws his power from four Elemental Crystals representing Earth, Fire, Water, and Wind; these crystals make frequent appearances in pre-VII Final Fantasy titles. As you fight him, remixes of various Final Fantasy tracks are played.

My Tumblr. Currently liveblogging Haruhi Suzumiya and revisiting Danganronpa V3.Culex I know. I played Mario RPG before I played any Final Fantasy, and heard those themes from that game well before I learned where they were from.
His boss Battle Theme was the main boss battle theme from Final Fantasy IV (that wasn't the four fiends theme that is) and the victory music was changed to the traditional Final Fantasy Victory theme as well.
It would be years before I learned where those themes were really from.
Good times, good times.
One Strip! One Strip!I played Super Mario RPG > FFVI > 3/4 of FFIV then I played Chrono Trigger > FFVII > FFVIII > FFIX > FFX.
Then I started X-2 about two years ago, but haven't finished it.
It feels strange to think that I started moving forward though the Final Fantasy games about 10 years ago.
"But if that happened, Melia might actually be happy. We can't have that." - Handsome RobAnd that's the season finale/end of disc 2.
Burning love!Love how Cloud still has the Tomatoes on his face.
And Cait's speech was nice...even if it didn't amount to much.
One Strip! One Strip! Why did they go through the season so fast?
Never trust anyone who uses "degenerate" as an insult. There's not a whole lot to Disc 2, about 10 hours of content. Someone in chat said it's because of the FM Vs in Disc 2 so that's why it's pretty short. Not to mention ending it there for this season makes for a natural endpoint.
Burning love! They did cram quote a bit of content into the Avalanche Time montage.
My Tumblr. Currently liveblogging Haruhi Suzumiya and revisiting Danganronpa V3.Sad they skipped all the scenes with the Turks this season.
Seems like an odd place to stop, considering the rest of the story should only take, like, 2 more episodes, tops.
They might have something specific planned for that. Maybe they'll try to do a Dragon Ball Shortz approach to the last bit.
Maybe they plan to do an episode for each character's sidequest/ultimate weapon before wrapping up at North Crater?
The only PS 1-era Final Fantasy I really like is Tactics. For me, VII was the start of the franchise's decline, with each numbered title (except X) getting progressively worse.
Though I don't actually have an opinion on how XII, XIII, and XV stack up to one another because all three of them were released under the "Don't actually care strongly enough about this franchise anymore to form opinion tiers" umbrella.
