The thing with the carrot and stick method is that both have to be present to be effective. What I think the majority is saying @ Fourth Spartan is that, having used the carrot with China to currently no avail, we have to shift and use the stick, otherwise there's no point in using the carrot in the first place.
Instead of focusing on relatives that divide us, we should find the absolutes that tie us.And yet that's ignoring the fact that Climate Change is literally on top of us, we cannot afford to abandon the carrot because it may have been used too much in the past. We need to work with them.
I don't object to applying the stick when necessary but it shouldn't be an either/or thing, it should be both.
"Sandwiches are probably easier to fix than the actual problems" -HylarnSo we're back to allowing the CCP to do whatever it wants because of climate change.
You keep saying you support carrot and stick, but you reject every stick suggested.
Disgusted, but not surprisedSo we're back to allowing the CCP to do whatever it wants because of climate change.
I suggest reading my post, it would avoid these... misunderstandings. -_-

"Sandwiches are probably easier to fix than the actual problems" -HylarnExcellent question, everyone talks about all the carrots we've been throwing at China, and yet we haven't seen any examples.
"Sandwiches are probably easier to fix than the actual problems" -HylarnFirst off, the reapproachment to China done under the Nixon administration, which was followed up by the opening of China to the various markets of the world. If this had not been done then Mainland China would have gone the way of the Soviet Union.
Second, the non-action to the annexation of Tibet, the current persecution of the Uyghurs, the crackdown on muslims and christians as of late and the trap debt scheme that the CCP has pulled off in Africa. I'm also going to add the current kicking down of Taiwan and the abduction of the WHO to save face in the current pandemic.
Third and final, and I say this as a Third World citizen, the passes governments give to chinese companies despite earning a well deserved ill reputation, this englobes stealing sensitive information and cheating their compromises with the local rulers.

Instead of focusing on relatives that divide us, we should find the absolutes that tie us.Looks like the ruling on Meng Wanzhou is gonna determine the fate of the two Michaels, supposedly locked up for committing espionage.
Personally, I think it could've worse. I can imagine even a civil war between Dengists and Maoists, it would have be beyond cursed.
Watch me destroying my countryI'm pretty sure that's what happened to China in Cyberpunk 2020, for that matter.
The awful things he says and does are burned into our cultural consciousness like a CRT display left on the same picture too long. -FighteerIf by using the stick, you mean issuing sanctions against China, unfortunately for the rest of the world, as long China is a member of the United Nations Security Council, any attempt to issue any kind of collective punishment against China will worth shit.
Wonder who voted against.
Disgusted, but not surprisedRussia has announced that they back China and diss anyone else trying to make something out of nothing.
And not quite related, but TIL about this hilariously off-key Venezuelan rendition of "March of the Volunteers":
Not surprising, considering that Russia is right now nothing more than China's lapdog, as Putin needs its technology and industrial base in order to survive and not ending like the Soviet Union again.
US Senators Tom Cotton and Marsha Blackburn just unveiled the Chinese Exclusion SECURE CAMPUS Act, which is set to bar Chinese STEM graduate students from acquiring study visad in the US.
Also, the NPC just passed the first civil code in China's history, which has been at least a year in the making; haven't found any exhaustive coverage of it yet, but according to my friend, one of the most controversial points is a 30-day mandatory cooling-off period for divorces, which Chinese social media users are calling an affront to the women's rights fought for by Deng Yingchao (Zhou Enlai's wife) in the 1950 Marriage Law.
Echoing hymn of my fellow passerine | Art blog (under construction)That is probably related to the recent thing about espionage, right?
It has always been the prerogative of children and half-wits to point out that the emperor has no clothesJesus Christ. They’re actually going through with that. Even with the issues with intellectual property theft, the brain drain China suffers in return is probably at least as bad.
So far it’s limited to just students with ties to Chinese military schools, but we all know what the intention is under the current administration.

And the usual threat from Beijing:
Attack on Taiwan an option to stop independence, top China general says
They think this will scare Taiwan into reunification, when all it's doing is giving Taiwan more reasons to not want reunification.
This is the equivalent of an abusive partner threatening to break into their ex's home with a gun if the ex doesn't return.

Disgusted, but not surprisedExcept with China, the abusive partner is one of the wealthiest people on the planet and bribes people into admitting that the relationship is still intact when in fact it's not.
Edited by FluffyMcChicken on May 29th 2020 at 8:31:43 AM
And said abusive partner is also smacking their kids around too.
Disgusted, but not surprisedGod damn it, the CCP is still pissy of the fact that Taiwan is leader in controlling the COVID pandemic despite all attempts to make it look like the Republic of China doesn't exist.
Instead of focusing on relatives that divide us, we should find the absolutes that tie us.
The issues with china and working with them are the following:
-China right now is moving into a nationalist aproach and becoming very agresvise with their surronding countries, meaning that confrontation is becoming more and more likey, there is a reason some in hong kong and taiwan and throwing their lot with trump is because they make statement against china action, even if empthy boasting.
-The thing with carrot and the stick is that because how china is right now, it can and it will to confrontation, people here more thant wanting pointless conflict want someone to put a stop to their shittery.
-The thing about eastern europe falling to the soviet is to ilustrated the inherit risk of working with authoritarians, specially because they will try to get away as much as posible, anothe example are erdogan using turky position to be a neo sultan, arabia saudi or israel having neo colonialist ambitions and getting away because they are usefull of the US, having them a parner in the fight agains climate changes can let the risk of throwing other people under the bus.
