This one is to discuss the sequel. The other one is to discuss the first movie.

I had actually hoped that the sequel wouldn't happen...I can't express enough how much I HATED the first one.

It started off strongly, but everything went downhill in the second act. But I don't think this thread will last long if we devote it to hating on this movie franchise

I don't even know where you'd take the sequel concept. The entire appeal to the original was retelling the original Sleeping Beauty from Maleficent's perspective. The original story hit all the beats. There's nowhere left to go.

Well there's always the issue of humans who still hate the fae.

In their perspective, Maleficent did kill their king who was for all we know was a perfectly legitimate and decent ruler. Also, for all they know, she also cursed and took away their princess.

Hey, Snow White got a prequel about The Huntsman. Nothing surprises me anymore.

I guess but the Huntsman was at least a character they could further develop. Maleficent just... isn't. I don't feel like there's enough to her character in the first place, but then I don't feel like there are many 'holes' that could use further development. The entire point to this iteration was 'Let's explore the villain as a protagonist!' and she went from Villian to Hero already. Purpose Served.

It'd be like trying to make a sequel to Wicked the Musical. There's nowhere for the story to keep going. Elphaba and Fyero have to leave Oz. Glinda must keep up the lie. The Wizard leaves and Morrible is punished. And Dorothy goes home. There's literally nothing left to cover.

To compare to Maleficent, our villian is a hero. The evil King is dead. Aurora ascends the throne, I guess. The Prince I GUESS gets with her but he was useless anyway. The three good faries are... still bumbling idiots I don't give a rat's ass about. And Diaval (DIABLO DAMN IT!) is I guess with Maleficent? There really aren't any characters who we don't know the backstory or development of that we care about unless you count the Prince and... I don't care.

Confirmation of the sequel and what the sequel will be about

A fantasy adventure that picks up several years after Maleficent, in which audiences learned of the events that hardened the heart of Disney’s most notorious villain and drove her to curse a baby Princess Aurora, Maleficent II continues to explore the complex relationship between the horned fairy and the soon to be Queen, as they form new alliances and face new adversaries in their struggle to protect the moors and the magical creatures that reside within.

I can't express enough how much I loathe Maleficent. It is the one movie out there I would remove from history if I could. That's how much I hate it.

I hope Disney will really fall hard with this one. Honestly, have they learned nothing from the Alice sequel?`

I get not liking a movie but hoping it fails just seems like a waste of energy.

[up][up] I know...but I just can't stand what the movie did to the fairies. I am honestly offended by it. And I am sure there are other movies out there which would create the same vicious reaction from me, but I usually don't get to see them because for one, I don't actively seek out the kind of movies I know will most likely offend me and two, most works which are as horrible sexist (or racist for that matter) as Maleficent is to me aren't box office success praised for being feminist. It's like the majority of the world praising birth of a Nation not for the role it played in the development of the movie as an art form, but for being such a great anti-racist work. The feeling you would have in this situation that's how I feel about Maleficent. And if they make a sequel, I won't even be able to ignore, it will be in my face the whole time. So excuse me when I hope that it finally gets the reception the first one should have gotten.

Couldn’t you just choose to do the same with Maleficent?

and two, most works which are as horrible sexist (or racist for that matter) as Maleficent is to me aren't box office success praised for being feminist. I don’t feel this applies. While Birth of a Nation’s racism is undeniable to anyone with common sense, there are aspects of Maleficent that could be argued to be feminist (Maleficent and Aurora’s relationship, the subversion of “true love’s first kiss”).

And if they make a sequel, I won't even be able to ignore, it will be in my face the whole time.
Again, you can ignore it. You have that option, you know that right? I wasn’t interested in Transformers: The Last Knight so I didn’t see it in theatres and mostly ignored any conversation about it. You can do the same with this Maleficent sequel that you’ve already decided that you hate.

So excuse me when I hope that it finally gets the reception the first one should have gotten.
The first one was divisive at best. It’s not like it became a breakout hit like Frozen or Moana.

[up] It made more money than anyone expected and it is now getting a f... sequel.

Also, I don't care if there are one or two elements of token feminism one could praise of you ignore the complete context surrounding them, a movie which was made in the 2000s shouldn't be less progressive than one from 1959! Above all it shouldn't sh... all over what I consider a masterpiece of animation, aside from being one of the most feminist movies in animation (not that this is a high bar).

And on top of all this: I just expressed my dislike in a discussion about the sequel due to the fact that, despite all of my hope, there will be a sequel after all. It is not like I am randomly attacking people over it or started an online petition or anything else particularly crazy or obsessive. So, why don't you simply allow me my feelings? One day you might encounter a movie you hate as much as I hate Maleficent, and then you might understand.

I'm not saying you shouldn't hate it. It's the whole "I can't ignore it" and "I hope it fails" parts I'm having trouble getting.

[up] Well, I can't ignore it, I am an active member of the Disney Princess community, the movie will come up one way or another. And don't pretend that you never felt relief when a truly terrible franchise finally stops churning out terrible movies.

Something I've wondered about, did the success of the films like Twilight influence Disney into making films like Maleficent? It's something I've long suspected

I always thought that Wicked was the inspiration.

I was thinking they they saw the success Twilight was having and decided to try for the same age group

Wicked probably inspired them too
