The Expedition.

The Campfire.

How are you doing, youngster? First time in Breitland, eh? Looking for fortune or some thrills? I see what you mean, I see. Yeah, you're probably in the right place - this whole town was made so people like you set off on some suicidal adventures every now and then. They usually either don't go too far or never return. Sands of The Wasteland claimed many your age.

Well, if you want to throw your life away for a couple of promises, there's this expedition organized by Federation of Unified Counties. Something about reclaiming lost culture, but it's always the same reason people want to venture into that hell: treasure. Loot from times when civilization supposedly was all around the world. Now it's only us on this here Sunset Peninsula.

But yeah, if you want to try your luck you should take it up with the leader of that expedition. What was her name? Carreau, I believe, Claudia Carreau. Used to be a Paladin in Holy Empire, but now she's all over the place, organizing crazy stuff like this. It's like she's throwing herself at something dangerous with the first possible occasion. It's probably how Federation even managed to make this expedition in the first place, they needed someone completely bonkers to lead it.

Seems I convinced you to go there. Try not to die out there in the sands then, I don't think my conscience could bear it.

Hello~

This here kinda sucky intro you've just read is your standard lore introduction to this here RP. You'll be a member of the aforementioned expedition venturing deep into sands of The Wasteland - a continent ravaged by a catastrophe of old times that ended all life but the one on Sunset Peninsula from where you start. It's going to be a challenging journey: between various nomads, monsters and eldritch magicks you'll have to face with the mightiest enemy of all expeditions that is the desert itself. With harsh climate, hardly any shadow to hide into and unrelenting sun, it's not exactly the most inviting place... but the treasures the few that managed to return brought with themselves are probably well worth the risk.

Before I post a character sheet I'm open to any questions that can clear out any inconsistencies. Any suggestions or propositions are welcome.

I got a question, I'm not quite sure what the goal of this expedition is. Is this going to be more like a D&D campaign in tone where we're always mobile and busting though abandoned temples for loot, or are we supposed to go setup a base over a place that looks promising and set up a sort of archaeological dig site while dealing with whatever shit mother nature throws our way?

It will probably be the former. I'm imagining a series of journeys, because one raid can only loot so many places.

That said, if enough people gathers and would prefer a different approach, I don't see why not to try it.

Cool. I'm okay with either, was trying to figure out of it was more like, for example, Stargate: Atlantis or Stargate: Universe in setup.

I'm hard to please when it comes to fantasy, but I'm interested if there will be standard fantasy races.

Alright. Seeing there's some interest, let me present you to some world-building and, at the end of that, a char sheet.

RACES OF THE SUNSET PENINSULA

Sure, it's a big peninsula, but one wouldn't expect to have so many various beings populating it. Supposedly back before The Catastrophe the mighty countries of old were about half its age... but I digress.

  • HUMANS
    • Descendants of burly and bearded Norselanders from far North that through the centuries mixed with various other races and become ubiquitous all over the Peninsula. Though they lack any extraordinary qualities, their enthusiasm and thrill for discovering new things keeps them in the league with the others. They come in all shapes and sizes and everybody knows what they look like. Average life expectancy: 75 years.
  • GNOLLS
    • It is said that not a single gnoll is above fighting dirty. The innate cunning of these canine men and women has won them plenty of wars. Even after their once all-powerful Empire divided in two smaller countries, forever clashed in war they still remain one of the most powerful forces on Peninsula. Usually bare-footed, they're as good warriors as they rogues although their skills in magic leave something to be desired. An example of a gnoll. Average life expectancy: 100 years.
  • ORCS
    • The mighty, honorable warriors that above all value honor and a good fight. One could say that mentally they're a complete opposite of gnolls - and true to form, the two races remain coldly neutral to each other at best. They're also not entirely trustful of elves due to legends of old where their respective deities remain bitter enemies. No weapon is too difficult for an orc to handle and they usually need hardly anything else to combat enemies effectively. Example of an orc. Average life expectancy: 80 years.
  • ELVES
    • While no one can deny their arrogance, everybody agrees that elves are simply smart. They are the scientists, technicians, inventors and teachers that simply exceed all other races in their terms of technological and societal advancement. They're also known as one of the few races on Peninsula that is capable of magic as a whole. Even an untrained elf knows a trick or two. In exchange, while swift, their physical fortitude is usually subpar when compared with other races. An example of an elf. Average life expectancy: 200 years.
  • SNAKEMEN
    • An ancient race that supposedly remembers The Catastrophe in full detail, but chose not to disclose it to anyone, snakemen are an odd folk. Like orcs, their main motivation is a code of honor. Unlike orcs, their code of honor seems completely undecipherable for outsiders to work out. To make matters worse, snakemen take offenses to it very seriously while hardly explaining anything. Suffice to say, that makes them hard to work with. In exchange once this barrier is down, they prove to be capable allies that mix intellect and physical prowess into one. An example of a snakeman.(although variants with human upper half are also known). Average life expectancy: 350 years.
MINOTAURS
  • Only recently did they begin walking out of their secluded Dragon Mountains and become a part of Peninsula's society of countries. That said, wherever minotaur walks he's greeted with fear and aversion - for the depiction of them portrayed by snakemen remains as that of cannibalistic, bloodthirsty monsters that rape, pillage and burn. It's perhaps exaggerated, but every minotaur is both a warrior and a raider at heart. No race can beat their natural combat ability and resilience. On the flip side, their relatively civilization-less lifestyle leaves them oblivious to customs and savoir-vivre, further fueling their impression as uncouth brutes. An example of a minotaur. Average life expectancy: 150 years.

With that out of the way, let's get familiarized with the char sheet!

  • Name: Self-explanatory.
  • Race: Same deal as the name.
  • Age: Generally try to avoid your age being too low. We're talking about venturing into unforgiving desert, after all.
  • Gender: Again, self-explanatory.
  • Appearance: A pic's nice although a description works as fine.
  • Personality: What makes your character tick?
  • Abilities: What can your character do? Is there anything extraordinary about them?
    • Magic: If they happen to be an elf - or a certified magus - what is their specialization?
  • Equipment: Anything of importance such as weaponry, armors, various misc items and such.
  • Misc: Anything else that didn't fit previous labels.

...alright, I think that's that. If there are still any questions, by all means, ask away. :)

Are those the only races? No hobbits, dorfs, centaurs, gnomes, fishpeople/mermaids, elephantmen, giants, golems, angels/birdpeople, ogres, etc?

Playable ones, yes. Goblins and ogres were meant to be on this list as well, but I decided to scrap them.

That said, if people wish it's not a trouble to bring them back.

I hope me coming up with a god is cool.

  • Name: Osmund, Cleric of Typhus the God of Disease and Rot.
  • Race: Human
  • Age: 35
  • Gender: Male
  • Appearance: Something along these lines. Osmund keeps his face covered so that he doesn't accidentally infect anyone around him (as well as concealing his fairly unpleasant and disease ridden face from the general public).
  • Personality: Osmund is a very friendly man who wants nothing more than to convince people to accept the gifts of Typhus so they can live in a world where they will no longer feel pain or fear since Typhus cares about each and every one of his subjects note . Most worshipers of Typhus are rabid (literally and metaphorically speaking) in their belief that everyone should be "gifted" with the various diseases provided by Typhus and be forced into worshiping him, Osmund on the other hand would rather sit down and discuss the pros and cons of worshiping Typhus and allow the person he's attempting to convert to make the choice out of their own free will and know what they're getting into by becoming a heavily diseased worshiper of the Plaguefather. Other than that, Osmund sees fighting as something to do as a last resort and would rather talk his way out of any violent altercations than attack a potential convert.
  • Abilities:
    • Since Osmund's has willingly infected himself with every disease and infection he has encountered, he is immune to poisons and feels very little pain (the latter also means that his sense of touch is nearly non-existant).
    • Osmund is also a fairly decent cook if you're willing to attempt to try his food (his robes keep any food he prepares from getting infected or poisoned by any of the diseases infecting his body).
  • Clerical Magic (healing):
    • Osmund has two ways of healing people, one is to use his very limited knowledge of magical healing close minor wounds. The other, is to channel the divine powers of Typhus through himself and into the target of his healing spell and essentially use various diseases to help close wounds and repair broken bones (Osmund will only use the second spell with the permission of the intended recipient).
    • Osmund is also capable of curing the effects of most poisons.
  • Equipment:
    • Osmund's robes have been enchanted to keep the numerous diseases inhabiting Osmund's body from infecting everyone and everything around him, thus allowing him to make physical contact with sentient beings without worrying about infecting them without their permission.
    • A dagger for general utility and a last resort self defense weapon.

I've had bad luck when it comes to forum RPGs in the past, something always seems to drag me away, but I like making characters, so if something happens to me & my schedule you're welcome to use this as an NPC.

  • Name: Urthslid the Archmage Monk
  • Race: snakeman
  • Age: "200-something"
  • Gender: male
  • Appearance: [ Similar to this, but with a cloak & staff like this. ]
  • Personality: Less enigmatic and xenophobic than most snakemen, Urthslid is driven by guilt to find lost technology that he hopes will improve the lives of his fellow snakemen. He dislikes how other races treat the snakemen post-Catstrophe and wishes things could go back to the way they were, when all the unscaled were impressed by snakeman magitech. He hates how that Cryptic Code of Honor fad has spread far and wide, but uses it to his advantage by pretending to be offended by things if it helps get his way (while secretly wondering if that's just what everyone else is doing).
  • Abilities:
    • Knowledge of the Ancient Screwups: can identify ancient snakemen artifacts, from years of experience living in the ancient cities. Didn't help bring about about The Catastrophe or know how the Nthslah caused it to happen. Looking for ancient magitech warmachines, medical devices, schematics... anything.
    • Ancient warmachine Operation. of ancient medical devices.
    • Staff fighting.
  • Magic: Never touches the stuff, this is just ethnic reflective paint.
    • Enchantments: Urthslid isINcapable of editing nearly any enchantment.
    • Spellcasting: If it exists, Urthslid can cast at least five different versions of it. maybe someone else can do it.
    • Cannot counterspell at all, missed the course due to The Collapse. getting a cold.
  • Equipment:
    • An Archmage's staff that is enchanted to catch a spell for redirection or placement upon a scroll. ordinary and painted with reflective paint. It does not glow at night either, that is a fire-gnat infestation.
    • Robes of the Archmage, enchanted to reflect any targeted spell. Monk, not enchanted yet somehow still improves calligraphy and vows of poverty.
    • Bag of Acquiescent Depths, that holds an assortment of magic and normal items. like a rosary.
  • Misc: Totally not a hastily edited document.

  • Name: Amber Southwick
  • Race: Elf
  • Age: 23
  • Gender: Female
  • Appearance: Similar to the example picture about, except with red hair in a plait and with burn scars all over her face and arms from where her magic backfired (literally) on her. She has a green robe that she wears over her armour, and wears her bow and arrows over the cloak.
  • Personality: Still considered a juvenile in elf years, Amber acts very much like a trickster juvenile, scaring her younger siblings, playing tricks on others, and generally being a pain in everyone's backside. To her, nothing should be taken seriously and that everything, including epic quests and battles, should be a load of fun. The only things she takes seriously is learning to use and control her powers, which manifested when she was 10 years old; and using her sword to have friendly contests with her friends. Despite all the fooling around she does, she means no one any harm, and will immediately apologise if she knows that she has taken a step too far.
  • Abilities:
    • Can fire her bow and arrow with deadly accuracy.
    • Can use her sword when the time comes, but is not as skilled.
    • Her constant running about means she can eat a lot of food and not gain much weight.
  • Magic: Specialises in fire manipulation
    • Can generate fire from her fingertips
    • Can cauterise major wounds with her fire, though doing so may leave a burn where the wound is.
    • When firing her bow and arrow, breathing on the tips of the arrow can set them on fire.
    • Is continuely experimenting to find new tricks, which have varying levels of success.
  • Equipment:
    • Her bow and arrow. The tips of the arrows can also be set on fire.
    • A small amethyst necklace, a birthday present from her late mother.
    • A sword which has her initals engraved in the hilt.
  • Misc: Her favourite food are blueberries.

Is this okay? Do I need to change anything?

Changed it!

  • Name: Kirkadaran Skullthrasher
  • Race: Minotaur
  • Age: 45
  • Gender: Male
  • Appearance: Same as the character sheet minotaur picture. He has thick black gloves, wears an eyepatch over one of his eyes at all times, and has a thick pair of goggles that he wears when working the forge, but otherwise they're resting on his forehead. He has a big axe and a big hammer strapped to his back in an X-pattern.
  • Personality: Comes off as rough, uncultured, unnecessarily violent, headstrong, and possibly dimwitted to members of other races. He's actually quite kind and friendly - for a minotaur. He likes working with his hands. He wasn't as much of a fan of the raiding and the pillaging as the rest of the Skullthrasher clan, nor did he have the same penchant for skullthrashing, and would eagerly do the jobs that didn't have as much honor with his people. He keeps that up by eagerly taking on this expedition as an excuse to see the world, discover rare metals, and better understand other races.
  • Abilities:
    • Manotaur: Aside from being a Minotaur, he also has the physically duties of a smith, miner, carpenter, lumberjack, stonemason, and packmule, which has given him much more physical stamina so that he rarely, if ever, will get tired from doing hard labor all day, and his arms are incredibly strong. He's not a great fighter for his species, but in general if things require it he can hit things very hard with his tools.
    • Craftman/Laborer: He is good with both gathering and working with metal, wood, and stone, capable of repairing just about anything non-magical. He can keep the party's equipment in top shape, melt down looted arms and armor, and if necessary erect barricades.
    • Magic: He only knows one spell, called FIST. He channels energy by taking his open palm, curling the fingers, and pulling back on it. He released the channeled energy by shouting the incantation, "YARGHGHGHGH", and rapidly accelerating his fist forwards. Should his aim be true and it connects with a target, a complex physical exchange occurs and transfers energy and momentum into the target, resulting in damage.
  • Equipment:
    • Ox Cart: Being strong like an ox, Kirk uses his excess energy to pull an ox-cart for the adventuring party. It's a large four-wheeled carriage designed to hold miscellaneous goods as needed, but roughly half the space is taken up by an anvil, portable forge, sawhorse, blacksmithing and carpentry tools, and a few ingots of iron, bronze, copper, and tin.
    • Big Ax: Primarily used to fell bothersome trees.
    • Big Hammer: It's good for smashing and clearing rocks from the path.
  • Misc:
