Removed Associate E-mail "Still In Use"

In the user profile, the button for adding/changing an associate e-mail says "add/change e-mail". Is it possible for one account to have multiple associate e-mails, and do the rest not get displayed? I am trying to switch the associate e-mails of my main account and my alternate account (the latter of which I do not intend to use except for an emergency or something similar). The setup is like this:

Main Account has Email 2, Alternate Account has Email 1. However, my ideal setup is that Main Account has Email 1, and Alternate Account has Email 2. I planned to switch Alternate Account to an "Email 3" so that Main Account could be switched over to Email 1, so I could subsequently switch Alternate Account over to Email 2. However, even after removing Email 1 as an Associate Email for Alternate Account, the system still says that "Email 1" is still 'in use'. Is there any way that I can fix this problem? Thanks in advance for the help.
