nice normal people who lead nice normal lives and would never stray outside the boundaries...but enjoy thinking about doing so.
... That actually describes me pretty well when it comes to some of the more bizarre/taboo fetishes that I entertain within the privacy of my mind and on sites that cater to or simply permit free discussion of such topics.

[up][up][up] That article is pretty sport on, speaking as a bisexual lady most of the points it hit on are ones that are very relatable, even today Class-S is a problem and you are expected to grow out of it......

Its why Fire Emblem caused a bit of an issue even outside of the west for instance (Same character, different issue).

SSSSSSSSSSSSSOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO...what, exactly, does modern Japanese society consider "manly"? What behaviors are considered "right" for a man?

Something very worth pointing out is that the Japanese - and East Asian in general - ideals of a stoic, outspoken, and personally responsible (read: does not insist on asking for help from others) man correlates extremely closely with that of the archetype of "toxic masculinity" or machismo in the West.

My guess would be that it's the ultimate modern result of East Asian societies frequently experiencing times of great hardship and civil strife due to having large populations (just look at China) which have to compete for scarce resources (famines being an integral feature of Chinese history, while Japan has its infamous but also romanticized feudal period). As a result, there's extreme societal pressure for men to appear as "strong" in the midst of others and save face - which I'd guess is directly lifted from the Chinese phrase ju lien.

I'd actually say that they are essentially the same, as it is human nature to be envious of what others have that you don't and thus to compete or downright conquer for what you desire. Europe and the rest of the world for the matter has no less of a violent and chaotic history than East Asia, and thus societal ideals regarding a "strong" and "fearless" man are similar if not identical across the globe.

What actually does make a difference is the fact that frequent wars and conflicts have made an undeniable impact upon European societies' populations; Imperial and Nazi Germany lost 1/3 to 1/5 of its population over the course of the two world wars. As a result - I recommend that you take a peek into the heated discussions in the Wonder Woman film thread - such horrific casualties have prompted Western societies to rethink the then unchallenged notion that the ideal man is molded through ruthless conflict. Thus, the phrases of "toxic masculinity" and machismo were borne out of a widespread sense of disgust for said values that defines them.

However, East Asian populations tend to be so large that even the losses of millions of people to war and famine can be made negligible through the numbers of survivors and societal factors that encourage a high birthrate. In contrast to the Christian-influenced preference for monogamy in the West, accepted polygamy in China did wonders to offset the fact that said East Asian nation suffered more deaths than the Soviet Union. If one look at the first graphic in the article provided, you'll notice that China suffered 20 million killed compared to Japan's 3 million, but emerges as losing less of a fraction of its total population than the latter. Thus, what Westerners call "toxic masculinity" and machismo remain the accepted norm instead of something that is still prevalent but readily and openly criticized.

Crowdfunding project kicks off to create manga promoting Okinawa history, culture

An Okinawa resident, originally from the U.S., is calling for donations to publish a manga book and an animated film through crowdfunding to promote the unique history and culture in the prefecture, which historically had been the independent Ryukyu Kingdom until the late 1800s.

The driving force behind the project to create the anime “Tedashiro no Kuniuta” (“The Song of the Sun Goddess”) is Julia Aimi Olivares, 30, from Minnesota, whose mother, Kazumi Mechler, hails from Naha, Okinawa.

Olivares, who had lived in Okinawa for about 10 years from when she was age 8, is well-versed in the regional culture and has won a top prize in a Ryukyu buyo dance competition, which was organized by The Okinawa Times.

Olivares returned to Okinawa from the United States in 2015 and set up a content production company, Ten Tun Ten Inc., in the town of Nishihara in the prefecture the following year. In establishing the company, she drew from her experience working at a California publishing firm specializing in the gaming and anime business.

In a fantasy story written by Olivares, Maka Arakaki, an female college art student who learns to perform Ryukyu traditional dance, meets Ba Kensai, an official from the Ryukyu Kingdom who time-travels to the modern world.

The duo defend Ryukyu, struggling against a bid by the central Japanese government to integrate the kingdom as a prefecture under the control of the Meiji Era government.

Olivares will try to collect ¥1 million by Aug. 1 to fund the project, aiming to publish a manga e-book based on the story in February 2018 and create an anime film in 2019.

“I will promote Okinawa through the anime utilizing a lot of materials and human resources,” Olivares said. “I will let people all over the world know about Okinawa and love it.”

The crowdfunding campaign, continuing through Aug. 1, can be found at: a-port.asahi.com/okinawatimes.

Kors K of the BEMANI fame has announced an indefinite hiatus at the end of this year. The statement in full:

It's almost five years since my first Comic Market release S2TB Files2: Activate.

I think the Dojin scene is a wonderful place where anyone can express their creativity. It's a place where producers can set their work aside and enjoy music purely as a hobby; at least that's what it's really supposed to be.

In recent years, it hasn't been easy for me to find the time between projects to prepare for the summer and winter Comic Market releases. I've been having to push myself hard, both physically and mentally, to be able to put out my recent Dojin releases.

The number of releases has been increasing tremendously, and I feel it has become overwhelming for both the producers and consumers. The value of music has been depreciating, and I have started feeling that I unwittingly took part in accelerating the depreciation.

I have been caught in a dilemma, and have decided to stop S2TB Recording's releases for an indefinite period at the end of the year. This year's S2TBTANOC event will be the final collaboration event between HARDCORE TANOC and S2TB Recording.

Right now, I'm putting in every effort into the projects and releases for C92 (Summer Comic Market), C93(Winter Comic Market), and S2TBTANOC Forever.

The past 5 years has been a great ride, and I'm not quite done yet. S2TB recordings will stop at the end of the year, but this doesn't mean I'm ending my musical career as kors k. I'd greatly appreciate your continued support. Stay with me, I have more surprises for you.

It has been known that the doujin music scene has been increasing commercialized starting from the success of Chata and Haruka Shimotsuki, both being doujin singers who went major in the early 2000s. At that time, doujinshi is still a niche. As time passes, the number of doujin producers who have gone major also increases. Some even crossed over to other fields, such as Mitsuki Nakae, a doujin singer who has become a seiyuu a few years ago.

Apparently, other areas of doujinshi are also affected by the commercialization. This has lead to backlash from purists who find this phenomenon a pollution of a field of creation which is supposed to be hobbyist in nature. Also, based on my observation, some people, producers and consumers alike, treat doujinshi with an attitude akin to commercial works.

The headscratcher here is that do you think that this has led to a decline of quality of doujinshi? Or perhaps such opinion is an effect of Nostalgia Filter? While producers will be pressured to produce more stuffs for their consumers, do they really get overwhelmed by the number of doujinshi available in the market? If this continues what will happen to doujinshi as a whole?

[up]In my opinion bad quality doujins always existed in such amounts. It's just that the Internet now allows them to be endlessly recirculated for whatever purpose instead of fading into merciful obscurity.

So, the Diet passed a law allowing the Emperor to abdicate. It... applies only to Akihito and is only valid for a three-year window. It also does nothing to address the other issues with imperial succession (such as the lack of heirs caused by the fact that the current laws say heirs must be male and any female member of the imperial family that marries a commoner ceases to be a member of the imperial family so she and her children are not in the line of succession).

Way to punt, guys.

[up] Everyone who isn't in the Imperial family. So basically every Japanese citizen is a commoner. Interesting note: Apparently, the Imperial family are not technically Japanese citizens.

Technically it's anyone who isn't a noble. But since the only nobles in Japan these days are the Imperial family...

Said male heir btw is a bit too young to be getting hitched and spawning more heirs.

Well, they're where they are now. Unless they plan to grow some male heirs in artificial wombs or some other sci-fi crazyness, they're gonna have to change the laws to accommodate the current situation.
