South Korea's legislature voted to impeach a judge accused of abusing judicial power and meddling in court trials. For the first time in history, the National Assembly voted to impeach Lim Seong-geun, a judge at the Busan High Court, who was accused of meddling in the trial of the Japanese journalist Kato Tatsuya, the Seoul bureau chief of the Sankei Shimbun, who was charged with libel against the then-President Park Geun-hye in 2015.

Lim is part of a scandal during former President Park's administration when former Chief Justice Yang meddled in trials in exchange for political favors from Park and her party. Yang also spied on politically liberal and progressive judges.

S. Korea to rein in intelligence service in bid for reconciliation

South Korea is moving to restrain the authority of its intelligence department to curb excessive surveillance practices and extend an olive branch to North Korea.

On Dec. 13, 2020, the National Assembly passed legislation that would have police replace the National Intelligence Service (NIS) in dealing with the North by the end of 2023 at the earliest, touted as a step toward reconciliation.

The intelligence agency has been responsible for counterintelligence on Pyongyang for some 60 years. During that time, it has also earned a reputation for meddling in domestic politics.

Originally called the Korean Central Intelligence Agency (KCIA), the NIS will see its authority scaled back so it can only collect intelligence on other foreign nations, take countermeasures against cyberattacks and work to prevent terrorism.

Progressive politicians worried about the agency’s domestic political interference see the changes as long overdue. But some in the intelligence community warn it could have unintended consequences on domestic intelligence gathering and security.

“North Korean agents come to the South through Japan, China and other third-party countries,” warned a former senior NIS official. “It would be impossible for organizations other than the NIS to block them.”

[up]Putting the police in charge of counter-espionage is less "extending an olive branch to the North" but rather "removing the absurd amount of power the NIS has". Gathering intelligence on North Korea will still be the job of the NIS, so calling this an olive branch seems to be a stretch.

A bigger problem with this move, that the article fails to mention, is that what this does is just transfer the absurd amount of power the NIS had to the police, which now becomes an almighty law-enforcement agency. The police have their own history of human rights abuses as well.

I don't know, rather than transfer authority it would seem smarter to just change them. The NIS sharing the tradecraft seems like a non-starter.

In a televised debate between Keum Tae-sup and Ahn Cheol-soo, candidates for the special election for the mayor of Seoul, Ahn Cheol-soo said "People should respect the right to refuse pride parades", that "In San Francisco, the Pride Parade is held in Castro Street, away from the city center", implying that it would be inappropriate to have Seoul's Pride Parade in downtown Seoul, and added "If the pride parade is held at Gwanghwamoon(a plaza in central Seoul), some people might want to see the parade, but some people will be there for other reasons, possibly with children. Some of them might not want to see the parade."

Why was it a debate between just those two? And did 금태섭 say anything in response? (It's kind of incredible how people's opinion of 안철수 began as positive a decade ago and has just gone down the drain since.)

[up] Well those boomers usually aren't predominately yelling about The Gays, it's mostly about how Moon Jae-in is committing treason and Park Geun-hye should be freed. But yes, there have been anti-LGBTQ , and many other objectionable protests at 광화문 before.

He has to be the single most hilariously stupid politician in the country.

And this guy is a doctor who graduated from the most prestigious college in the country and became one of the youngest professors ever.

Man, what happened to this guy. [lol]

The two of them are going to have a mini-primary of sorts to pick the third option candidate for the mayor of Seoul.

Keum replied that he was disappointed, and that "This shows how hard it is for our society to remove discrimination", and that "where the Pride Parade is held is not the issue, and the parade was held for more than 20 years thanks to the people without a voice, the people without power who fought for it." He pointed out that "We, Mr.Ahn and I, as part of the third option, have the task of speaking out for people who don't have power, who don't have a voice, who don't have a party that represents them."

[up] Okay, that's an alright response from 금태섭.

I remain a bit confused about the third option thing. Are the smaller parties (민생당, 기본소득당, etc.) part of this, or is is just the two of them cutting a deal?

Factories Korean flags are having a hard time because the flag has been associated with far-right protests against the impeachment of former president Park Geun-hye, so people are not putting up flags on national holidays. These far-right protesters are not so good for business, as the flags they bring to protests are cheap ones made in China.

Ahn Cheol-su is confirmed as the third-option candidate in the special election for the mayor of Seoul, beating Keum Tae-sup. The two agreed to join forces, having two televised debates and a survey has been conducted to find who is the better candidate out of the two. The winner will then enter an opposition primary election with the candidate nominated from the People's Power Party.

I'm not surprised, but still, why?
