I wonder if Tohru is mentally kicking himself when he heard that.

Yeah, Hartgen a scumbag.

I get the feeling that Hartgen's being manipulated by the third black Chaika.

7th Avenging:

  • Don't think I've seen traps being implemented at points of resurfacing before.
  • Shin wasn't that resolved to kill them. Maybe next time.
  • So Hartgen wants war? That's it, Claudia's the most well-adjusted hero forever and ever.
  • So Chaika Black comes in three instead of two.
  • Can't help but make Layla comparisons. Someone wants war, big castle, converging forces, flying fortress getting involved...
  • Didn't think Fredrica would assume Dominica's form ever again. Also, her rampage continues to be stalled.tongue

Episode 7. In which the tournament begins.

Can't have a castle without a moat.

Those are some easily dismantled bars. Why even have them there?

Nice with dead bodies there. Wouldn't at all affect the water quality.

Traps like those are hilariously ineffective. Unless maybe they spring out as a surprise, but even so, they're quite a bit harder to make than their worth as defensive traps. So it basically just look like a gauntlet someone's supposed to run.

Oh, hey, him.

I wonder how many times she's said, "Shocking truth!" I also wonder if she's actually said it before where it actually applies as well as it does here. Usually it's just when someone's pointing out that she's thought something stupid. And yeah, it's a rather endearing trait of hers.

Methinks she's a bit needlessly specific in what she'd do. Then again, it's Akari.

In a castle like that, of course the remains would be there.

Now you actually see the faces of the heroes. Imagine that, since we've already been introduced to them.

So she did take that form for the battle. She is taller with better reach like that, so it makes perfect sense. Then again, she also has another form with somewhat better reach... The guy making the speech probably should've recognised her, though. If he saw her at all, that is.

I wonder how many layers of manipulation are in place here.

I find it amusing that they start a free-for-all with everyone gathered in large a crowd. And then they just politely run to the playground and start to fight randomly.

Mid-battle conference. Which doesn't end up in them fighting each other. Which makes it seem like they're agreeing a little more than they admit.

I find it somewhat odd that they're basically just thinking about either standing down or starting a war. Two diametrically opposed actions with nothing in between. Considering there is a threat, they should probably at least have forces ready to deal with it, even if they should decide to stand down in the end.

Everyone just ran away when they took one guy down?

I noticed that Viivi is kinda touchy about the whole "turning into a Chaika" thing.

No kidding.

It makes me really wonder what happened to the other Chaikas were arrested. There must not be many of them if the agency is not taken seriously?

Are they executed?

[up]The number of Chaikas seems inconsistent. Sometimes it seems like there are dozens of them, and sometimes it seems like the ones shown on screen are the only known ones.

[up][up]I think she liked her blonde hair. Must be it. Totally has nothing to do with people thinking she's turned into a different person who's a threat to all of them.

Last season mentioned that they HAVE caught Chaikas before, but the previous examples killed themselves rather than reveal what they're up to. White (the one we're following) seems to be the most successful so far, and together with Red, get the lion's share of the focus as a result.

So? It means that because the other Chaikas aren't followed, they're unimportant to the narrative compared to the Chaikas we DO see. Seems simple enough to me.

Which makes it seem like the world doesn't exist outside what concerns the main characters, and that it's fine to just make stuff up for whatever sounds good at the time.

Because... that's usually how light novels work? Narrower focus and stuff like that, unless you happen to be named Kamachi or Reki. And it's not strange given the author's other works too — Scrapped Princess LITERALLY revolved around Pacifica and her family (even what the Obstinate Arrows did on their own time led back TO the Casulls), Macademi (MC is literally GOD), etc.

Look, there may be a Chaika for each Character Class in D&D too out there, with their own interesting misadventures, but the fact is they're not the main character (which White Chaika is) nor her opponents (Layla, the Black Chaikas). So yes, they don't matter.

I mean, I don't see where the problem is, truly. It's something that plays out in other forms of fiction all the time, not just in light novels.

You seem to be more of a fan of stories where the characters that, despite being followed by the narrative, don't end up doing much. Like meddling kids on a case, except it turns out that the police had the badguys on stakeout for months AND they eventually nab the suspects anyway.

Most light novels aren't like that. A good bit of heroic fiction isn't like that, unless the setting necessitates a much broader scope than the characters themselves (war stories with multiple fronts, etc.).

Chaika isn't that sort of story. Everything comes back to White Chaika, because she's been the most successful of Gaz's brainwashed pawns. Tropes Are Not Bad.

Make me understand then. The internet isn't exactly the right place, because vocal cues like sarcasm don't transmit well to, well, just text. Clearly something about Chaika has gotten your goat, yet you don't seem to complain about Twintails, which has the heroes front and center, yet you don't seem to be bothered how the Military (or NASA, which was namedropped in episode 1) aren't doing anything in that story.

I don't even know where to begin to correct you there. I don't have any major gripes about Chaika. The biggest one is probably Akari, which should be clear to anyone actually reading the thread. And honestly, what you write bothers me more, but that's off topic.

I made a relatively insignificant comment about consistency, and that seems to have gotten your goat, to use an expression you're probably familiar with. No idea where you got those things about taking action and agency from.

Twintails doesn't take itself nearly as seriously, so comparisons about anything resembling realism don't even make sense to begin with.

See, that's much better, and much more clearer. No offense meant, no offence hopefully taken.

Pardon me, but I've come to expect snark from one-liners posted by people I'm not personally familiar with. Especially when there are no emoji to give hint of tone.

Heh, there really are chaikas for every DND class. Chaika also gained massive badass points, becoming incredibly proficent with battles and magic.

The new episode is so awesome most of this come spoiler tagged:

There's a fridge horror about the army of puppet chaikas, probably they all fought in the arena and failed, the black world tendency (or adult) chaika seems to be pulling all the strings, with her own goals, we got confirmation on fortune cookie, but atleast it came with somewhat of a price. I guess next episode will be a huge team up of everyone with Toru to storm the castle.

Episode 8:

You know, they could probably just beat those guard easily. Also, Chaika could just blast those bars.

Not to nitpick but Why the hell would you sneak inside a tower, when you have a flying dragon?

This show is kinda formulaic with it's villains. It's always some crazy noble allied with an evil Chaika.

Ah, so this is where all the other Chaika's where hiding.

I too would remeber someone who cut my hand off.

Frederica worfs again. Being dragon is suffering.

Goddamit, Red, stop being so pig-headed.

I really hate when villains just sit on their asses and then somehow things work out in their favor all by themselves.

Also, Chaika is kidnapped again? This is a rehash of the previous season final.

Let's see what happens next.

8th Avenging:

  • Kinda funny that Akari and Fredrica are being stealthy when they could easily get to the top. Although, causing a ruckus like flying to the top might not have worked in their favor.
  • So this is where all the other Chaika Versions were. Being puppet ninjas.
  • Vivi's fortune came true. Augmenting her voice sure did the trick. Although, Gillette had to lose a hand for the reversion to be completed.
  • Fredrica got taken out again. Was I expecting something different? Not really, as it has become second nature to anticipate her getting the short end of the stick no matter what.
  • Chaika Red fought and lost. And she took it quite badly. Can you now team up with Toru and the others, please?
  • Chaika Black's smart. The best way to play the game of gathering remains is to not play, since others are doing the dirty work for you. Well, this was the logical result.

Episode 8. In which many Chaikas gather.

That set of bridges somehow reminds me of Dog Days. I think htis is a little more serious.

If the goal is to get across, why do so many turn around to fight? I mean, sure, if they're attacked it's a good idea to defend yourself, but running if you can is the best option.

Chaika was actually doing better before he tried to help.

You know, for being ordered to take those people aside for any reason, they're sure good at coming up with reasonable rule-break explanations.

I was just thinking of that little bit he said about wanting war. Kind of relevant. And then he redirects the question.

Well, that's a lot of them. In various bright ninja colours. I wonder how this will turn out.

And then they meet.

I find the music very odd.

She used the small sword. Well, no one said she was weak.

Time to get serious. Time to subdue Fredrica. Yet again.

Well this isn't good.
