In regards to the canon characters, just let Bean play them. He's the GM, it makes sense.
That is, if they appear. And wouldn't spirit characters be a problem, considering only one person on the world knows how to deal with them.
The player character spirits don't have to be bad spirits, and who says a regular, non-Dark spirit couldn't be negotiated with if they were causing trouble. And Unaloq knew how to calm spirits anyway, so the technique isn't Avatar only.
Yeah, but Unalaq bit the dust, remember? And I doubt there's a book on the subject. If there is, it's probably on that underground library.
Korra could spread it around as needed.
Then we could have people using it for evil reasons?
Well, the guy who used it the most was evil...

Conception is sin Birth is pain Life is toil Death is inevitableWhy not? It's just a tool.
I have a feeling that, once Season 3 of Korra begins, we'll see a lot more interest in Spirit PCs. Even retroactively; those foxes in the Ancient Library didn't seem too hampered in their job of traveling around the world collecting information (except by their own laziness. ) In fact a Fox Spirit probably would make a good PC race, if they are like the Japanese Legend ones (who can assume human form.)

I'm seeing that as a possible plot point we could use in this RP, if we go for an RP set during Korra's time.
Okay, so here are all the ideas that were thrown around.
- Bounty hunters sent to capture Team Avatar during Book Two of ATLA.
- Earth Kingdom city is invaded by Fire Nation, characters from both sides, prior to ATLA.
- Loyalists trying to bring Ozai back to power, Harmony Restoration Movement, dealing with the aftermath, stuff after ATLA.
- Something set after Lo K Season 2, with spirits mingling around with humans.
So what should we choose? I'm gonna refrain from making a vote until everyone chips in.
My vote would be either for 1 with the change that we are a strike team meant to take down key members of the Fire Nation, or 2 without any modifications.
If I'm sure of something it's that I'm not sure of anything.Ditto. Although I like the bounty hunter idea, it doesn't lend itself to acting in group.

Well, I'm obviously biased, so I'll vote for 2 as well.
Conception is sin Birth is pain Life is toil Death is inevitableI like both Number 2 and 4.
My only concern for number 2 is the inevitable Pv P conflict, but that's probably because I'm not used to playing it here.
I'm also bias for option 3.
I vote for #3.

#3 or #2 for me. #4 is spoilahs for Korra, which I haven't watched yet.

The voice of thy brother's blood crieth unto me from the groundHm, I'm removing my hat from #1 and putting it on #3.
Not really fond of 1 but any of the others could be cool.
2 or 3 fer me, yeh
The graceless warrior, wielder of the edgeless blade, prophet of the old religions, writer of fluent nonsense, saviour of soul and song.So I guess it's between pre and post ATLA?
Option number 2 would get us access to airbenders...
If they want their character to die, yes. What about waterbenders? Weren't they really snobbish to any outsiders before Aang reached the North Pole? I can't remember.
Not to mention the Avatar is the bridge between the two worlds, as in he/she is the only one who can make contact with spirits. Having a spirit character before Korra doesn't seem like a great idea because we'd have to severely limit the interaction between human and spirit.
Unless our GM wants to play an Avatar. We could have an Avatar version of Ghostbusters!
