"This is the place, gentlemen. This is where it all starts... See it! Isn't it amazing?" Says a young woman as she stands before the ruined door of what once must have been a military keep... its stone walls weathered but still standing tall and true.

"It's an abandoned forward base on a backwater planet cast away from any center of civilization.. Really, this is why you called us to this dump, Elice?" Asks the first of two men standing before the blond woman, this one a tall fellow with short spiky black hair and a sour looking disposition.

"Correction, it's OUR abandoned forward base on a backwater planet cast away from any center of civilization, dear Elias" Is quick to correct Elice even as she starts to climb the walls of the keep... dexterous hands finding handholds in the tiniest of cracks in the stone.

"I'm guessing that you already bought it, Elice" says the second man... this one younger and shorter than his companion, with long hair set in a ponytail... this a dark green color in shade that is certainly not natural in a human like him "Well, it does have potential... it was built solidly and a planet like this tends to require mercenary work"

"Yes!" Is quick to agree Elice as she finally reaches the arc over the broken door, sitting upon it as she regards the two men below as if they were her subjects "Dirath is completely right. This place is brimming with possibilities... we just need to fix it up"

"That's not even what I'm talking about... Us, you... With our reputation we could get work near anywhere. We could join a professional company or even with the forces of Mirage. Then why are you making us look at the broken down ruins of a fort on this frontier planet?" Asks Elias, his golden eyes looking up at the flippant young woman above.

Elice took a few moments to answer... letting her legs sway as she looks at the lovely scenery before her... plains and forest, a rough path of dirt leading to a full, budding city in the distance "I'm tired of it. Of going with someone else's flow... of the greed and lack of principle we found in some... in the agendas and ruthlessness of others. I want to step back and build something new... something with my own hands. Now, I'm leading my own destiny" she says, closing her eyes... her tone even and full seriousness.

Then however, she had to smile as she looked down at Elias "Then again, it's just as well that you wish to keep serving others, Elias. Just shut up, do as I tell you and join my company. You'll have all the battles, glory and money you can desire. And I'll rest easy knowing I can count on you to protect me as you have so far"

At those words, Elias really couldn't talk back... the man brought a hand behind his head and then looked elsewhere with a frown on his face "Blasted woman..."

"Ehehe... Well, you can count on me as well, Elice. We'd need some paper work... a lot of fixing up this place... then spread the word. You got a name for us already?" Asks Dirath as he brings out a small book from a pocket in his coat to start noting down details.

"Yeah..." says the young woman, taking from her pocket a blue colored rune encrusted gem the size of her palm "We'll be known as the Hunter's Blades"

Hello everyone! Welcome to a new RP by yours truly. This one is a mercenary style RP, your characters are part of a mercenary guild which takes on quests which are small, mostly self contained adventures, after the which they receive a reward. With such resources and the experience from the missions, your characters and the company itself will grow and develop, acquiring new facilities, weapons, contacts and even the capability to reach out to distant realms.

As for the setting, it's a multi world blend of fantasy and sci fi. It should have the feel of a sci fi setting, however, the races and the technology involved all works with magic. Instead of moving at light speed or through warp gates, planar travel is the go to solution to moving through space. The different races all hail from different planets and did not meet until they ventured out into the planes and ran into one another.

Your characters are all newly accepted members of a recently established mercenary guild called the Hunter's Blades. The three founders, Elice K Black, Elias Brooks and Dirath Mairn are all successful mercenaries with quite a bit of reputation to their names, specially due to a daring attack on a Orcish Leviathan ship, where Elice herself cut off the head of the Orc Warchief within.

The guild is located on a planet on the edge of explored space, called Karshold. It's a mostly wild planet, with a few dozen settlements and a handful of cities doting its landscape of wild plains, dense forest and overall, natural wonder. The fauna within is quite diverse and plentiful and the settlers number amongst them members of near all species.

Technology in the setting, as mentioned before, is all reliant on magic. There are swords, bows, armor and the like, but most tend to be enchanted to perform on par with armors and weapons from a sci fi series. Magic facilitates travel between the planets in the form of portals through the Astral realm, massive flying ships transport goods and soldiers between planets and the like. For more in depth information about the setting and three big races in particular, please consult this thread. The races currently exposed there are mostly the big three of the goodly Alliance, the Humans, Elves and Dwarves. However, a lot of other species have joined the Alliance and been discovered since the founding of it... Orcs, Goblins, Hobgoblins, Ogres and such were all found living together in a single planet for instance. If you want to try your hand at a particular fantasy race, speak to me and we'll see where we place them in the current order of the Universe.

Signup Sheet:

  • Name: Name, aliases, nicknames, titles your character goes by.
  • Gender: Male, female, none, both, complicated, unspeakable bug horror.
  • Age: How long have they been alive.
  • Race: What race your character belongs to. Also include subspecies if you wish, elves come in three common flavors, and there are some modifiers like vampirism, angelic, demonic, licanthropic traits and the like which I got to detail further.
  • Appearance: How does your character look like?
  • Personality: How does your character act? How do they think? Who are they on the inside.
  • Class: Just a general descriptor of your role as a mercenary. Can be as short as a single word, a small sentence or a treatise on their expertise.
  • Skills and Abilities: Describe what they can do. Magic, martial skills, knowledge, tricks and trades, all sort of stuff they can do.
  • Possessions and Gear: This I will give a good look to begin with. This is the stuff your character carries on their person as a mercenary. Includes weapons, armor, potions, magical devices, tools and the like. You may include enchantments on the stuff you wear, though I'll be judging on a case on case basis what is too much. As a guideline, to start with... you may have an enchanted main weapon, a secondary weapon, enchanted armor, three potions of different effects and a magical tool. Depending on your character, you may shift around this... like ignore the potions to enchant your second weapon and the like. Enchantments run the gamut from simply being stronger and sharper, to have the weapon coated in flames and the like. As you progress on the RP, you'll be getting access to better gear and more tools. You may look upon the magic artifacts of games like D&D to get an idea of the sort of effects your tools and weapons may get.
  • Assets: Things that are not your gear you possess. Connections, homes, means of transportation and your money. Based on your background and the possessions you put for your character in gear, I'll be saying how much money you have access to.
  • Bio: The backstory of your character, experiences, upbringing and the like.

I realize that this Signup thread is a little barebones at the moment, however, with your questions and doubts I hope to expand it and provide guidance into the setting and RP proper. Thank you very much for reading so far and your interest. I do believe I'll be accepting only about 10 characters if that much people show interest. More and things may get out of my hands to handle, but we'll see as we get there. In case there are more than 1' applications, I reserve the right to pick and choose who gets in, so writing an application first does not guarantee entry.

Definite interest. I assume we can create our own species, within reason? Well, stealing actually. I'm thinking of a variant on Edgar Rice Burroughs Green Martians.

Hmmm reading up on them, I think we can definitely make something similar with that... actually, they wouldn't be too different from the Orcs and the other races from their planet. Perhaps they can be a variant found within that planet? Though it all depends on how you wish to handle it. Gather up the details of the species as you wish it to be and we'll figure it out.

The same basic appearance but shrunk down to around seven feet. Also the basic nomadic Proud Warrior Race Guy lifestyle. Probably a more sensible attitude towards armor. They might be more logical as a variant of ogre rather than orc but that's up to you.

Hmmm as I mentioned on the planed where Orcs come from, there are a lot of different races.. goblinoids, ogres and the like. Orcs are the dominant species as they strike the best balance between size, strength, smarts and numbers within their planet. Those who know the least about these species just call all who come from that planet orcs, those who recognize the different but don't want to bother learning all the different kinds just call the whole group the green skins. I can definitely see these green four armed and tall martians as a subset of green skins. The planet was embroiled in a lot of war from tribes and clans comprised of all the different species who fought for honor, conquest and power. If you want, we can have your green martians come from somewhere else, but I think they are a good fit. Now you'd only need to figure out a name for them.

If I'm sure of something it's that I'm not sure of anything.

I'm interested. Say, would guns and lightsabers be acceptable in a world which uses ordinary weapons?

Guns are accepted though niche weapons. I'd prefer if people didn't concentrate on them, but a person or two can certainly use them. With magical armor, fantasy materials, a bit of superior sturdiness of people in this universe due to having access to magic and other factors, being shot with a normal gun is necessarily a death sentence... then again, if you enchant the gun and such, they stay in competition with enchanted bows, crossbows and such and becomes a matter of taste. Still, they do remain niche and somewhat rare weapons due to the tone of the setting. Their place tends to actually be occupied by wands and staffs charged with a specific magical spell.

Lightsabers on the other hand... Hmmm, not exactly the same as one, but you can have something similar if you think magical swords made of Holy Light or some other such thing.

If I'm sure of something it's that I'm not sure of anything.

Martians did use guns but they were basically single shot muskets/pistols albeit with exploding bullets. If you okay it then fine if not also okay, I'll go with a spear/sword combo if not and a musket/saber combo if yes. Also no problem coming from Planet of Orcs but since all the traditionally "bad" races come from there he'll probably identify as ogre.

Runek: Magitek golems and other forms of android like magical constructs are completely alright.

Tricksen: Half breeds are possible, though birthrates are a lot lower than reproduction between members of the same species. The Lunar caste of elves have expanded to other moons besides the one in the main world. They do leave it on special missions, diplomatic events or hunting parties. Furthermore, there have been cases of Lunar caste elves abandoning their society and striving out on their own, though their numbers are quite quite low.

tricksterson: Hmmm a magitek musket is alright I do believe. Also for comparison, Orcs and their kind are kind of treated and in general have similar attitudes to the Krogan from Mass Effect.

Stratofarius: Magitek engineers are a thing, so it can work on concept.

I'm definitely interested, and may actually use a character I was making for another RP!

Let's give him a shot...

Name: Samson duBarr

Gender: Male

Age: 17 human years

Race: Anthromorph (Beastmen) Subspecies: Pachydae (Elephant People)

Appearance: Very large (9 feet three inches, 437 pounds) with tough, grey, wrinkly skin. Large, flappy ears that make a heart shape on the sides of his head. Has a long trunk that reaches his naval that can move as easily as a human arm. His tusks have been filed down so that they barely reach his trunk. His eyes are rather small compared to his body, but he has glasses that make them appear almost cartoonishly big. Wears a peculiar hunting uniform (without the shoes) and often carries a rifle on his back.

Personality: Very posh and polite, Samson prefers to follow others rather than lead himself—that is, unless he's with other Anthromorphs. He acts as if he were a human aristocrat, which seems quite fitting considering that he was predominantly raised by them. That being said, he also holds very romantic views about the poor and derelict, which is one of the reasons why he's joining the Hunter's Blades.

Class: Samson is...well...a hunter. He can follow tracks and use his surroundings to locate his prey. His size obviously keeps him from remaining stealthy, but he still has the ability to hear infrasound tones (sounds too low for the human ear) and can even make some of his own. When on the ground, his bare feet are very sensitive to vibrations, so he can tell where things are traveling from long distances. As to what those things are, or if he can even catch them, is another matter.

Skills and Abilities: Samson has some natural abilities unique to his species like infrasound detection and sensitivity to ground vibrations (mentioned above), but he lacks the magical skill that most of his peers seem to possess; the only magic he can use is the kind he buys in enchanted items. Coming from a privileged background, he knows how to address people in the upper class (and ignorantly assumes the lower classes act in the same way) and how to be a proper guest/host. His trunk is remarkably dexterous, which makes up for his clumsy and "stubby" two-jointed fingers.note  Samson is a talented hunter with his elephant gun, and with his enchanted glasses he can aim with better accuracy. Given his size he could be a very capable melee fighter, but he thinks fighting so close to the enemy is too frightening and "ghastly" for him to bear.

Possessions and Gear:

  • Enchanted "Elephant" Gun: A long-barreled hunting rifle used to kill large prey. Samson was given this weapon as a birthday gift from his "big" brother Danny, and treasures it like a child treasures a stuffed animal. Ordinarily, rifles like this do not fire fast enough to pierce magical barriers, but because its barrel accelerates the bullet as it's fired, Samson's elephant gun has the chance to penetrate an enemy's barrier or (if he's really lucky) shatter it altogether.
Of course, the gun also has a few downsides. The Elephant Gun only shoots one bullet at a time, and has to be reloaded after each firing. Given the complexity of reloading and given Samson's difficulty with his hands, it takes about thirty seconds to a minute for Samson to get ready for another shot. During this time he is incredibly vulnerable and needs to take shelter. A long-term problem could be the scarcity of bullets; the Elephant Gun only fires a special cartridge that reacts to the barrel's enchantment (a sort of safety measure in case it happens to get stolen). Samson only has twenty-five cartridges with him, and he needs to get some cash before he can buy more. The only way to get cash is to get bounties, so Samson has some motivation to do well!

  • Enchanted Glasses: Samson owns a pair of circle-lens reading glasses that he can use to zoom in on an object. The range goes to fifty yards away and can be quite useful in analyzing and aiming at specific targets.
That being said, the glasses are not a scope. While he's zoomed in on a target, Samson cannot guarantee that his gun is pointing to it. This leads to more misses than the sci-fi calibrating eye piece that characters like Garrus have. Samson just has to trust that he's shooting at the target.

Assets: Samson has familial connections to an aristocratic family in a nearby metropolis, but since he technically ran away from home, he isn't interested in asking for their help right now. That also means he doesn't have any more money than what he carries in his pocket, which comes to about 150 (insert currency here).

Bio: The duBarr family has been an influential power in the Human side of the Alliance for generations. In fact, they've become so influential that they no longer need to work at it; in other words, they've become decadent and lazy. Jean duBarr and his wife Noda spend most of the year traveling the various planes on delightful adventures, lounging is lavishly decorated mansions, visiting fancy statues and buildings, and glancing at the playful urchins. It was on one of these exploits that the duBarrs discovered a bizarre anthromorph infant crying on their carriage seat. Jean offered to get rid of it, but Nora found it "adorably exotic" and wanted to keep it as a souvenir. So they did.

Samson spent most of his childhood under the supervision of a nanny. At first the nursery in the attic was quite lonesome, but when his older brother Danny was born he was finally given a playmate. As the years went by the duBarrs noticed Samson's exceptionally rapid growth—physical as well as mental—and decided to invest in his education as a gentleman; after all, it seemed like the most upright thing to do, considering how destitute his kind tended to be. With the help of his trunk, Samson became an eloquent scholar, a gifted hunter, and a fine apery of nobility.

As much as he adored his family, Samson could not help but feel out of place. He looked outside at the city below and wondered if Destiny intended to have him spend the rest of his life smoking with fat men and getting strange yet subtle looks from the help. He had read of the wondrous adventures of the lower class and longed to experience them himself. So one night he wrote a goodbye letter to Danny and quietly stomped into the city streets. In a charmingly rustic bar he overheard something about a group called the Hunter's Blades. A hunting club for paupers? How wonderful! Graciously leaving his ale for the barkeep to handle, Samson started his marvelous journey towards disaster.

  • Name: Harken Bravant
  • Gender: Male
  • Age: 22
  • Personal Quote: "Better to die a hero than live as a coward, crammed up in a wretched hole"
  • Race: Full Hewman
  • Appearance: Harken is considered tall for a human, reaching around 1,90 m even though his family tends to be medium sized. His hair is long, rather unkempt and brown, reaching the middle of his neck easily; his eyes are icy blue, counterpointing his impulsive and fiery personality; he has a short unkempt beard that goes a little lower than his ears, with no other facial hair present. He wears a simple grey shirt accompanied by a dark blue trench coat, long black pants and a metallic waistbelt which holds his weapons. Albeit slim, he is a muscular fellow, a trait that goes unnoticed by his clothes, as it covers his arms and legs.
  • Personality: Owner of an impulsive, fiery personality, Harken is one that never gets satisfied with the status quo. Aside from that, he is quite a friendly, extroverted yet bold fellow, though one of the most unagreeable people in the world. He is always searching for something new and exciting, quirks which have brought him to leave his home and travel around the world as a mercenary. He also has a problem contenting himself with the situation at hand, always driving himself to improve his condition and status. In a way, he is one to always seek out for better and more worthy things, but also one who often leaves his possessions and conquests behinds in order to possess better things and attain higher conquests. He has quite a lot of problems with his lack of patience and discipline, even though he strives to do his best at his job. He is a determinator that doesn't give up until his goal is reached, but ironically he is one to abandon it if an even better goal presents itself.
  • Class: He is specialized in close ranged combat more than ranged. If a target is too far away from him or trying to distance itself, Harken uses a set of knives to do the job, but his primary fighting style is based on hacking and slicing with his trusty energy blade. Instead of worrying too much about his defenses and covering himself in plate armor, he prefers to use his mobility and skill to parry, dodge and assault more easily. In RPG-istic terms, he's a speedster with moderate offense and little defense.
  • Skills and Abilities: If the class description is not enough, please warn me.
  • Possessions and Gear: An energy blade (http://cmhart.deviantart.com/art/Beam-Sword-160847789 ), which was found by him by accident and taken when he was young, it is turned on and off through his thoughts; several knives which he uses to throw at targets; simple first-aid kits that are pretty much used as the ones we know.
  • Assets: Harken possesses little more than what he already carries literally on his back. He does not have a fixed residence, since he's been doing mercenary work around the world whenever there is an opportunity. The money he carries is a reward for his work, but since he is recognized only as a novice, his payment is small. While he could return home, it is an option that he has already thrown off, as his family would insist for him to give up on the mercenary life and live a tranquil one without needless danger.
  • Bio: Harken was born to a simple, modest family in one of the settlements of Karshold, particularly one of the most rural ones. His life expectacy was that of a boy from a small village who would grow up to work in the lands of one of the farmlords and die in modesty brought by a simple, yet average life. As a child, Harken showed himself to be impulsive and smart enough to find loopholes in orders and restrictions, all in all living as a hyperactive kid who was too lively for such a rundown place; however, he showed no signs of yearning to leave, the thought never crossing his head during his childhood.
  • One day, when breaking his parents' orders by venturing forth the settlement by curiousity, he trampled upon one of the trees' roots and fell a long way down. It would have been fatal to him if only the heavily bushed region did not stop him from going any further. There, on this heavily vegetated region, he found by coincidence the debris of a small escape pod. He could not find anyone here, but the boy found a curious foreign object which he mistook for a lantern... until he grabbed it and, from its core, a blue light emerged, revealing its true nature as an energy sword. After "toying" with it for a while, he discovered that it reacted to his thoughts - thinking 'shut off' would shut off the lights, while thinking 'turn on' would light it up again. Content with his new present, he decided to take it home with him all the while hiding its true nature from his parents. From that day on, practicing on that desolated spot with his energy sword became routine.
  • After becomming a teen, Harken started harboring an intent to leave the settlement and search for a better life. His parents demotivated him, but otherwise paid no mind to it, thinking this foolishness was due to his puberty. When he reached 14, he started working in the lands of a farmlord as his father before him, and for all these years he thought unpleased that he'd unevitably live his whole life like this... Until, one day, when he became 18, one of Karshold's many mercenary groups stayed on his settlement. He managed to convince them to let him in when he showed his inate, but undisciplined skills with his blade, and left a letter home before departing with the gang without a notice.
  • Recently, as a 22 years old mercenary, Harken decided he was tired of working with mediocre mercenary groups which gave him little payment and almost no respect. He heard news about a new group called The Hunter's Blades, composed by a few renowned mercenaries who were looking for recruits, and thus decided to head off there. Perhaps he'd find what he was looking for within them.

Nick: That would be alright.

Both signups: So far, so good! Hmmm though it seems like people are getting a bit more of a Fantasy vibe based on the characters so far. There's nothing outright wrong with them, though you have to understand that society and life in this setting is more like what's you find in Mass Effect or other Sci Fi works even if its dressed and works on the basis of fantasy. There is long range communications, mass media, tons of politics and great advances in technology granted by magic.

tricksterson: Go crazy with mounts. If it's too crazy I'll be sure to tell you, but you surely don't have to stop at horses.

[up] Well, I assume a planet in the far edges of the universe (ok, I'm exaggerating, I admit...) has less technology than the ones near the center of the universe, even after an "universalization" (globalization reference) proccess. That being, it may be possible that a few settlements are less industrious/urban and more rural, even if technology powered by magic is present.

Of course, I'm just speculating. Correct me if there's anything wrong with my thoughtline or how I set up my character's bio.

EDIT: That thought gave me a question. How are the settlements of Karshold technology-wise? Are they futuristic and developped enough? Are they more industrious/urban or more rural? Is the planet itself too dangerous beyond the settlements? Are the settlements connected by each other via roads and commerce, or do they try to be self-suficient and isolated?
