By unified crafting, I assume he means the system that I pitched for our Exalted game, Three, where instead of a cluster of anywhere from 5-10 separate skills, all of which cost as much as (more useful) "normal" skills, there's a single "Craft: General" skill, and then (sometiems) specialties to represent proficiency/area of focus.

I personally prefer this method, as the standard game method tends to lead to either a crafting character who doesn't actually craft much, or a crafting character who is literally incapable of doing anything other than crafting, which excludes them from basically the whole game, as crafting happens during "downtime."

(I will note that in either system, Crafting needs a certain degree of player/GM communication to keep balanced. As long as no one's trying to exploit the system/both parties are clear on what's allowed, and what's desired, it should be fine.)

On crafting:
By the book, the Craft Ability is split into a bunch of separate abilities pertaining to each area. So your Righteous Devil does not actually have simple Craft 3. She can't just craft anything at 3 dots. She would have Craft (Fire) 3 and only able to craft stuff made primarily in the forge. Carving wood, building a house, cutting gems, brewing an elixir are all beyond her.

So, to get a qualified craftsnerd going, you'd need to buy them all - Craft (Fire), Craft (Earth), Craft (Wood), Craft (Air), Craft (Water)... Oh and Craft (Magitech) of course, for all the really good stuff. And that's without going into Genesis or Necrotech.

That leaves the crafter either really limited in stuff he can craft or unable to do anything else. So, unifying them into one Ability is a common fix - leave just Craft from 1 to 5, giving access to all mundane crafts, with special crafts being accessible after buying a speciality. Commonly it also allows to break the usual cap on amount of specialities.

So you would have Craft 3 (Fire +1), being able to craft generally anything at 3 dots and specifically forge metal at 4. A specialist crafter would have something like Craft 5 (Magitech +3) - crafting anything mundane at 5 and Magitech wonders at 8 and able to also buy, say, Fire +1 in order to boost metal forging and Earth +2 to repair/construct buildings.

Oh you damn ninja, Tentacles.

After thinking it over, I'm going to say that Adannor's system looks good and I will be implementing it for this game.

I think the idea was that in real life all those crafts are separate skills, and knowing how to do one has little to no effect on the others. That doesn't seem very Exalted though, so I can see why you'd change it. At least for Solars.

Actually quick question: Do hearthstones set into artifacts you have stored in Elsewhere work or not?

Well, IRL fighting with a sword, axe, mace and spear are all different too, but here we got Melee for all.

Yeah, but they're nowhere near as different. Using a spear is a lot closer to a using a sword than blacksmithing is to carpentry.

The way that works you just need to fill in one of the craft types and treat the filled general bar as counting for all of them.

Still writing the background and working on the manse, but I'm mostly done.

Now I just have to figure out how to get this to accept an external link or format it by hand. Joy.

Oh, by the way I decided to keep my dex at 4 just because I want to see what difference it actually makes. My old Infernal had dex 4 too and he did alright, although that may have been mostly due to being nearly incapable of dying.

OK people I'm tired of waiting. Signups are staying open for 24 more hours then they close 7th player or no.

I'm interested in joining if there's room, but I'm kind of new to Exalted. How much of the rulebook should I have memorised?

You don't need to have the rulebook memorized, as I said earlier I'll be handling your dice rolls and systems. You just need to know enough to be able to efficiently play your character, e.g. know what your charms basically do so you know when to use them. And there is currently one spot left in the roster until tomorrow at eight when signups close whether or not that spot is filled.

Not really, the setting will explore itself alot, just know a couple place names you'd like to visit and remember them. If you need it I can send you a map of Creation. And as for lore... just basics should be fine know what types of exalted there are, know who will be friendly most the time and who'll be an enemy, know important events like the disappearance of the Scarlet Empress and other such things.

Also, if you want help with character creation,

http://anathema.github.io/2013/09/13/Version5.1.3.html

Download that. It makes the process pretty fast and easy with the program handling all the calculation and stuff. It also gives you a brief snippet about what the charms do within the charm trees and what source book to go to for the actual info.

It early and I'm still tired but isn't one of the big Problems that people don't know about the curse? (aside from the ones responsible)

And Lytek (the God of Exaltations) not telling anyone while he tries to fix it?
