[up][up] Does this mean DC had to pay for rights?

[up] I actually don't know? The tamales variant cover was an alternative suggestion according to Jimenez, but I guess the backlash from social media helped solidify that cover was inferior.

Anyway, looks like this slipped under our noses. DC and Universal Distribution enter new comic book Direct Market distribution agreement.

Effective October 2022, retailers can order DC periodicals, collected editions, and graphic novels that go on sale beginning in January 2023 and beyond through Universal Distribution.

That being said, Universal Distribution won't be the sole Direct Market distributor for DC. The publisher will also continue its relationships with Lunar Distribution and Diamond UK for Direct Market sales of periodicals and graphic novels, as well as its relationship with Penguin Random House for worldwide distribution of graphic novels and collected editions.

And for the uninitiated, Universal Distribution a Canadian company that's been distributing comics, tabletop games, and more for 30+ years.

In January, The Flash will be starting a twice-monthly story arc called ''One Minute War" about an invasion by the Fraction "an alien empire that uses the Speed Force like we use solar, or nuclear." https://www.cbr.com/flash-60-second-war-bimonthly-schedule-dc/

The Fraction have superspeed vehicles as well!

Is it just me, or does the Speed Force stuff tend to get overplayed in Flash stories? Not too familiar with the character beyond his TV show and that Wally is now the acting Flash.

Tbf it's why the flash is a powerhouse at all. So I can understand its use.

It can be difficult to come up with challenges for a speedster, hence often defaulting to "another speedster".

Then again, characters with superstrength usually end up fighting people who also have superstrength, and no one seems to mind.

[up]I think that's because superstrength vs. superstrength means we've basically just got a fight which other parties can be involved in. While superspeed vs. superspeed means that basically every fight has to be a duel. I mean, it's still better than Young Justice's tendency to either forget Wally existed or have him run directly into his enemy's fists.

But superspeed, like reality warping tends to be a power that is just impossible to believably counter outside mirror opposites, so such fights tend to be either mirror fights or nonsense.

[up]x3 I mean, I'm pretty sure the Speed Force only became a thing in the 90s, so it didn't play a role in either Jay' and Barry's formative stories. And it's not like it's impossible to have the Flash without it, as both the DCAU and Young Judtice prove.

Per Adams, the point of this story is to showcase a threat that only speedsters are qualified to stop.

In fairness Adams has made a point of mostly avoiding using speedster villains for his plot.

The Flash run recently came out of an arc where Eclipso was the main antagonist mind-controlling the Justice League Dark on Gemworld.

And an entire alien empire that uses the Speed Force is a bit more of a creative idea than just another evil Speedster.

Superman probably has them both beat. Especially if you go back to the Silver Age, when evil Kryptonians were escaping from either Kandor or the Phantom Zone every other week.

[up] And beyond that, there are hosts of Superman and Superboy-like characters who were the champions of other worlds, who in the Silver Age most often (but by no means always) showed up to try to win the love of Lana or Lois. Starboy from the Legion of Super-Heroes started out as one of these. The covers usually had something like "Superlative Lad has even mightier powers than I do! Now I'm old news!"

A really fun Silver Age JLA story had a fan writing in to the JLA about a fictional villain he created, the Maestro, who purposely misled the League about his power and trapped them inescapably; said fan was worried he'd created a scenario a real-life villain might use and asked if they could it. After thinking over the scenario, the League realized the Atom was the key to recognizing his actual power—being so tiny, he couldn't hear the music that supposedly made everyone dance, but was affected by the high-frequency signal that was really causing it—and used the knowledge to prepare accordingly and defeat him.

On a funny note, the World Without Justice League Superman issue, the Aquaman story features the random inclusion of Jess Quick from Future State and their relationship with Andy Curry which hasn't been seen since Future State last year

What makes it weird is that currently Andy is a toddler while Jess is a teenager over on the Multiversity: Teen Justice comic, and that in-universe Aquaman has never Jess yet here they are in his supposedly perfect world dating his daughter

As said its a very random inclusion as the story is focused on a celebration of the Aquaman mythos with cameos of various supporting aqua-characters, and yet here's a Flash subsidiary character taking up a lot of page time for some reason

The story was probably a repurposed 5G story or something

5G could have possibly worked. Floating timelines are an abomination that have killed good storytelling in superheroes. So having an overarching timeline with the heroes and having them age (as well as their kids and later heroes taking over in future generations) could have been cool.

The problem is that Dan Didio's a fuckwit of the highest order

As noted his idea of putting the older characters legacies to rest would have been a widespread slaughter (Flash Family and Teen Titans) or making them evil (Superman and Damian)

Like imagine the widespread rejection Jess Chambers would have faced had they indeed went with the entire Flash Family butchered by Wally possessed by the Horseman Famine.

It would not have gone well.

True. I still think legacies need to be done more; the fans who refuse to let the older ones be replaced are a cancer on the fandom, especially when they become writers.
