I have no idea why I'm starting this thread, but what could possibly go wrong? :P

I discovered that there is a Bubsy hint book. It's selling for FOUR THOUSAND DOLLARS on Amazon. Not even kidding.

There's also a second hintbook covering the first 2 games selling for 75-125 dollars on ebay.

Well, technically that's a seller on Amazon selling it. Still, JoyPros are extortionists.

I had Bubsy 3D on the PS 1 back in the 90s, and I'll admit - back then I never even noticed that it was supposedly a bad game. I used to play it for hours all the time and never saw anything bad about it. Would I have enjoyed a game like this in the present day? Most likely not. But for how much it managed to entertain me back in the day, I'd say it was "good."

Zoe Quinn, developer of Depression Quest, once linked to a browser-based art gallery retrospective thing set in the Bubsy 3D world as part of her GOTY article on Giant Bomb. It's pretty interesting.

She had an unordered list of games that she enjoyed this year. Bubsy 3D was listed at the top of the list, but that doesn't mean it was her top game. It just so happened to be first on the list she made.

The ending made me chuckle.

Bubsy 3D's apparently a screamer/creepypasta with a really long set up.

Or so I've heard. Is it true?

[up]

if it's the web game, it is, but at the same time it's sort of like peeling an onion. There are load and loads and loads of cheats for it. it's very surreal.

daveydead

So this was a weird thing. I’ve discovered 13 cheats so far, many of them linking to... interesting things.

bradeustathios

After playing through it once, it gave me the ghost cheat. Upon playing with the ghost cheat, after a while a “ghost chat” window popped up in game. After a little longer, someone started chatting with me. Easily the creepiest thing I’ve played in a long time. This chatter gave me a twitter handle that reveals most of the cheats:

Relevant. I also think this is the most watched video in his series...

If there was a Bubsy 4/5 (depending on if you count the Jaguar game) what would it be about?

I think it'd be called Bubsy in: Purr-Historic Times and be about resolving the cliffhanger at the end of Bubsy 3D, where he was stuck in the time of the dinosaurs.

So I just contacted the guy that created Bubsy. He makes murder mysteries now, along with his wife, and when i confirmed it was him that made Bubsy I asked if he was interested in making another Bubsy game.

Here's what he said.

"Thanks for your interest in Bubsy. Seems that whoever purchased Accolade retains the rights to Bubsy, and I don’t know who that is. I know it’s not me, though, so I couldn’t make another Bubsy game without that company’s agreeing.

Also, it took about 12 people to make the first Bubsy and about 14 people to make Bubsy 3D, and unless you’ve got a couple million $ lying around, I’m pretty sure I can’t do that kind of work myself. ;-D

I’ve been focusing on making smaller, self-funded games, like the murder mysteries, since I can manage the programming, art, music, etc. myself, and my wife and I write the stories, dialog, etc. and get them shipped in a reasonable amount of time. I’m currently working on a “casual game” for the iPad.

I’m happy to hear you liked the bobcat, though. It’s nice to hear from people who enjoyed him,

Check me out on Wikipedia if you like, and I’m sure there’s lots of articles about Bubsy on the web.

Best, — Mike"

Poor Bubsy. I was watching a TAS of the first game and all of his lines imply he's an actor who just can't catch a break. Given what happened to him, that's both oddly prescient AND makes for a better story than the actual game.

[up]Y'ever read the manual? It's not like that if you've read it. The manual presents him as a dood with tood, who hijacks the manual and rewrites it himself, because he's edgy. So him complaining is funny for me because he was so hyped on himself and he gets his ass kicked again and again.
