They aren't, but they're one of the major offenders and we are on the gaming section of the fourm on a thread talking about gamers soooooo

Don't see why that matters. Don't really care if the soccer fanbase starts wars over their stuff. That's the soccer fanbase's responsibility.

What are we gonna do? Say that we're A-OK because we're not quite as bad as other places?

We're gamers, so we fix gaming. We fix other places if we have the opportunity.

Fair enough. But that just brings me to my main point that I admit this gets my attention because I just don't think its fair to label the entirety of the gaming community as this when several fanbases are like that.

Now how do we deal with ALL of these fanbases is a question that needs to be resolved as a whole society issue and not just our small fan group.

I'd argue its a society problem and the question should be "How can we help society along" instead?

Of course not. Just be aware that making a scene about it is what is often the reaction trolls want.

They're not going to stop whether they get what they want or not. So what does it matter if they do?

So? They'll think differently when they're ostracized and/or facing jail time for sending death threats to Bob Mc Developer's friends and family.

They're not in it for a cause, you know. And lulz is a terribly shaky platform to build one's life on.

I will admit, it is a social problem, so trying to devise individual solutions might not be a boon to the cause in the long run. Which is why these kinds of solutions should be devised to at least stymie off the bad temporarily in conjunction to having overarching solutions devised as well.

And just because you're not alone in your shittiness doesn't make your shittiness excusable.

Gamers, especially the ones who going around thumbing their nose at others, are spoiled brats. They want to be up on ivory towers deigning what types games and gamers are worthy , but as soon as hard cultural questions are asked they act horribly reactionary. Gaming should be a medium of expression for all, not a gated community for the fortunate 'true gamers'.

Will that really work though? The "It wont happen to me" phenomenon likely applies to a lot of these asshats. I would argue a LOT of these people are young people who have no idea what they are doing.

So it sounds like we need to find a way to instill responsibility and awareness into younger generations.

Like proper bullying awareness at a young age.

They'll get an idea after they face consequences for their actions. Young people aren't exempt from consequences for stealing a car, why should they be exempt for sending death threats?

And perhaps help the older generation to realize that cutting the younger one adrift rather than defending them will be better for everyone in the long run.

It doesn't matter whether trolls get what they want or not. They're not going to stop.

Well as I said earlier, I think the problems stem from a much deeper problem. Internet asshattery is a symptom, not a cause. I think if we can instead find the deeper problem and resolve to intelligently work those out, we will be better off in the long run than internet crusades and shame campaigns.

I'm of the belief that my solution would be better spent putting the effort in.
