[up] Depends...Names for US cities usually aren't because they are pretty new. Older ones, yes. IE Milan/Milano is called Mailand in German, Venezia is called Venedig aso. The point is that a lot of people assume that The First Avengers got it wrong, but it's a typical "you aren't as clever as you think you are" situation.

And I do think that wrong complains like that qualify as fake news.

This is a few pages back, but in regards to people thinking of a "Statue of Liberty" in Paris, I immediately thought of the 2nd "National Treasure" film, where that exact subject comes up.

With all the memes about women choosing a bear over a man, Hollywood might wanna get on an 'East of the Sun and West of the Moon' adaptation

Also, I think some are misunderstanding the problem. Sure, we all have our casual brain farts. We dont realize stupid things and especially things that come naturally to one are not so to another.

However, the problem is that this is... basic research. Really basic. Like "I'm writing a basic class book report and should maybe use some real world context" research.

Exactly. There is a difference between saying something stupid in a conversation and writing something stupid in an essay. One thing in understandable, the other is just laziness (at best).

But was the Nostalgia Critic ever meant to be a serious, well researched review show? I feel like the NC has always been more about comedy, hot takes, and overacting.

Compare this show to Film Brain, who does well-researched, serious film reviews, and has dropped the comedy thing long ago. It is a very different kind of show.

[up] Nostalgia Critic long ago stopped being just a comedy with deliberately over the toppnes. Watch his real thoughts reviews and compare it to his Nostalgia Critic videos and you will see how often it's his actual thoughts that he talk about through Nostalgia Critic character.

[up][up] I'd say that the show is 75% comedy and 25% analysis. (At least the post-2012 episodes; the previous ones I'd estimate at 90% comedy.) I've always considered it to be something in the vein of Mystery Science Theater 3000. (And before an angry mob burns me at a stake—I'm referring here to the general concept of "Riffing on a movie intercepted with skits". As for the quality, your mileage may vary.)

If the comedy is "dumb reviewer says dumb things" then it takes more than merely saying the dumb things to present it as a joke, you need to SHOW why its dumb and why the dumb reviewer is dumb, or else youre just presenting dumb things uncritically.

But even then, the joke isnt "dumb reviewer makes a dumb review", its "the reviewer makes a reference or a pun (based on a reference)" or "the reviewer yells and pouts, like a child, he isnt a child".

"It is just comedy" is NOT some sort of get out of jail free card for spreading fake news. Plus, there is proper analysis happening on the channel AND within the Nostalgia critic shows happening. If you mix review and entertainment, you better get your facts right and make it VERY clear when you are deliberately getting it wrong.

The Nostalgia Critic is not a news medium, either, though, and it does not pretend to spread news, real or fake. Taking an NC review as "news" of any kind would be very misleading.

[up] Yeah, but I have to agree that Doug could do more research for his stuff.

Then replace "news" with "information". If you work in the media, you should employ some basic care that you don't spread wrong information.

But he's not working in the media, either. He is just some guy on the internet. He hasn't been trained in journalism or anything. There are NO qualifications whatsoever for the "job" of internet critic, and consequently, we can't really hold him to ANY standards of journalism or research.

If you base your critique on some facts or information that was proven false, your critique no longer holds up. Also, getting stuff wrong is still considered misinformation to your audience.

Swanpride Since: Jun, 2013

He isn't just "some guy on the internet". He is a professional youtuber, meaning he makes his money by publishing content. That he is doing it over You Tube is neither here nor there, there is a baseline of care which should be observed for a serious channel.

And, btw, I do think that we should hold youtuber to the same standards we hold the media by. At least the ones who make money out of You Tube.

Nobody is saying that he is. There is still a need to have the professional youtubers and publisher follow largely the same rules. But we are getting off-topic here, especially when it comes to spreading misinformation, Nostalgia critic is hardly particularly remarkable. It is mostly the occasional lazy mistake.

...and now Doug should just bring back his Mistakes video to remind people that he does, in fact, does mistakes. Even when things that would have been solved by doing research. This has been a thing even in his early videos.

[up] Of course, it'd hard to make this sort of video and not point attention to the elephant in the room that is CtC. Sure, Doug could make a running gag out of not mentioning that but while possibly funny, it'd be in poor taste.

Retiring Douchey Mcnitpick in hindsight shows exactly what kind of company those guy wanted to run. Because they never own up to their mistakes, it means they never learn to be better.
