Oh, my god. I've never heard of this. They actually have a Hindu manga? This is really a thing? *spontaneously combusts* grin

They also have a Shinto manga, if X/1999 counts. Be advised there's probably a lot of genderqueer and yaoi themes to it, natch; it's CLAMP.

I can get past yaoi, so long as it's not anvilicious. It's not my thing, but a little bit of it wouldn't be bad.

Well. I'm an atheist, but my family is Hindu, and Hindu mythology interests me very much.

I'm not sure if I count.

I'm counting you. Besides, Hinduism is one of the only religions that actually allows atheism to be practiced under itself.

I don't really think you should count yourself to be part of a religion just because your parents are.

[up][up] Yeah, it does. It's widely known to see most/all spiritual beliefs as valid. Atheism is just seen as another path.

Hindu atheists accept Hinduism more as a "way of life" than a religion. They are unlike other Hindus in their religious outlook, but they share the same cultural and moral values.

Oh wow, I didn’t know that.

Culturally, yeah. Maybe also morally, I will have to think about that.

I'm going to link this to the Buddhist thread, to see if we can get some back-and-forth traffic.

What you need in this thread is some Hindu-related news "Urban Outfitters apologizes to Hindus & removes Lord Ganesh socks from stores & web"

Now, see, that's just plain weird.

I think there’s a global conspiracy to see who can get the most clicks on the worst lies

I understand the complaint, but I believe that the guy was slightly overreacting. I mean, I get that he doesn't just want Ganesha on a pair of socks, because it's exploitative. But he's making it seem as if all Hindu merchandise is bad. I, for one, would like a Ganesha shirt, for spiritual reasons. I disapprove of the fact that someone basically just slapped his face onto a pair of socks, to make them look vaguely "ethnic", but I think that it would have been better off be would have suggested a line of legitimate Hindu-inspired clothing, as opposed to altogether contesting the concept. A legitimate style of clothing would be better than a gratuitous one.

Honestly, I think a pair of socks with Ganesh on 'em would be really cool. There're sites that sell ICHTHYS undies, after all.

I guess it's different when you're unquestionably on top as far as controlling the public discussion, though. Christianity in North America doesn't need much protection.

Still. It reminds me of when I was in high school. There was a huge trend of girls repurposing those big canvas totes that rice bags come in sometimes as purses, with screenprinted images of Krishna or Rama on the side.

Yeah, Kingston fashion was like that; I wouldn't guess most of the non-East Indian kids (which is to say damn near everyone in the school besides my friend Helena) could've told you exactly who they had on their bags - myself included, since I'm hopeless at non-Christian iconography.

I want to be irritated at the gratuitous slapping-on of the faces of Vishnu's two most beloved avatars, but the concept is just too awesome.

I kind of wanted one, but I was never quite sure if it was polite to carry around the image of a god to whom you haven't been properly introduced.

... how did I ever think I was an atheist?

Well, personally, once I realized that I was "not Christian" atheism seemed to be a possibility. But, then, I rationalized that I still believed in something; I just didn't know what it was.
