I've never played a Sims game before, but the Vinesauce Meme House streams have interested me in the series. Any recommendations as to which game to try or what packs are worth it?

Sims 3 is the best imo. Long load times but it's so much better than 4 without feeling as old as 2. Also, it has World Adventures, the best expansion pack.

2 or 3. Expansion packs add to the experience but I avoided them during 3; the base game is fun enough and you can easily play 100+ hours.

Amusingly, I think the reason that every Sims game conspicuously has a University expansion pack is because the Sims 2's University expansion is one of the best expansions the franchise has ever had, and kind of iconic for it.
