The General Religion, Mythology, and Theology Thread

Go To

Since we've gotten told to stop talking generally about religion twice in the Homosexuality and Religion thread and were told that, if we want to talk generally about religion, we need to make a new thread, I have made a new thread.

Full disclosure: I am an agnostic atheist and anti-theist, but I'm very interested in theology and religion.

Mod Edit: All right, there are a couple of ground rules here:

  • This is not a thread for mindless bashing of religion or of atheism/agnosticism etc. All view points are welcome here. Let's have a civil debate.
  • Religion is a volatile subject. Please don't post here if you can't manage a civil discussion with viewpoints you disagree with. There will be no tolerance for people who can't keep the tone light hearted.
  • There is no one true answer for this thread. Don't try to force out opposing voices.

Depends. In the Evangelic Lutheran Church, a vicar (not ordained) is an intership for becoming a pastor. A pastor is simply an ordained priest who is a leader of a congregation.

Vicar in the Catholic sense, means deputy or representative (vicar of Christ = Pope). Pastor is a priest of a parish.

I just learned something new about my own religion (Islam) today while watching a TV program on MBC that discusses one topic each day and shows alternative views, often seriously debunking widely held beliefs through carefully examining the passages of Quran or Sunnah that are usually cited in support of the conventional opinion(s).

This new thing I learned? Apostasy has only ever been prescribed death as punishment in case a person didn't merely renounce Islam, but became actively belligerent towards Islam and/or the Muslim community in general (e.g. declaring open war). There are even several examples of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) of leaving known apostates alone unless they committed an unrelated crime (e.g. murder).

I don't think there is any religion that has ever prescribed a punishment worse that banishment for leaving the faith.

[up][up]That's very nice to know. Like, it's a matter of life and death for some people. Can you give me references on that?

I'm afraid I don't remember any off the top of my head, but you could watch the program's episodes on this site (the relevant episode is here, merely 6 minutes long). Yeah, MBC got into its head that some people would like to watch things online instead of through good ol' TV.

Time to pull out the proxies. Anyway, because (I'm guessing) Arabic is right to left, the 12- may have ended up on the wrong side of the url after reconstruction. Not sure if that helps. It does not seem to be blocked in canada.

One possible reason is someone may have secured broadcast rights in the US that prohibit online streaming from a different source.

Question: How do you deal with door-to-door missionaries? I'm a Christian too, but they keep trying to convert me to other denominations I'm uninterested in.

I tend to just refuse politely, i.e. tell them I'm content with my current denomination. That usually suffices.

I just wish they wouldn't ring at such un-Christian times. Seriously, who wants to talk about God on a Saturday morning?

Usually just politely decline. J Ws as of late have been pretty scarce due to the hostility of the countryside, but on the odd occasion they do show up the adults stay in their vehicles and they send little kids to the doors. Pushiest ones I've seen were Baha'i missionaries when I was young (haven't seen them in years, locals would probably just take shots at the for being muslims nowadays), but my parents just invited them in and shared some coffee while they debated religion for an hour before saying their farewells.

It's kind of obligatory to assume that religious ideologies that contradict your own are false in at least some manner. Having said that, there are religions that don't contradict enough that you could follow them both.

And there are cases where Religion A asserts the existence of a lineage-type relationship between it and Religions B, C, et al. (which are typically older than Religion A), often with Religion A claiming that i supersedes Religions B, C, et al. Such is the case with the Abrahamic religions: Christianity is Judaism's successor, and Islam is the successor to both. In fact, the Abrahamic faiths as a whole assert that they supersede a number of previous faiths that were preached by prophets/messengers who are mentioned in the Bible (or the Quran and certain hadiths, in Islam's case).
