Gotta say, if this is all one big setup for a war over fantasy!oil then I haven't been giving this show enough credit.

I find it somewhat hard to swallow that the only options are Dust tech or middle ages.

[up] Consider that Sembalence needs dust to be used to the effect seen on the show, and that both include the domain of Elemental Powers, ergo I don't think electricity in Remnant is even possible without Dust at this point

I find it somewhat hard to swallow that the only options are Dust tech or middle ages.

Well, we don't know that's actually the case. However, the idea that technology might run on a certain type of fuel and people may have to go back to the drawing board on a lot of things society takes for granted is a situation that does exist in real life. The question is whether anyone in Remnant does work on 'alternative energy' solutions, and that struggles enough to get funding in real life due to the monopolies of big business interests.

It's not like this situation has happened only once in history. Society once relied heavily on 'whale oil' for absolutely everything - from cooking oil to the oil that fuelled lamps. When whale oil started becoming harder to obtain and prohibitively expensive, people were writing in journals that if they ran out of whale oil, it would be the end of the world. And, yes, melodrama did abound, but there was global economic panic about it.

The way people address the future of oil and society's reliance on oil reminds me of historical events like that. Humans do have a habit of latching onto something that becomes integral for society, and it takes the approaching end of that something to kicks societies up the backside to find something new.

The difference here is that Remnant appears to have a similar reliance on a single fuel source, but is also limited in their options by the Grimm making global exploration and even the building of societies an extremely difficult endeavour. According to Remnant's own lore, humans only survive because of Dust... how true that really is, remains to be seen.

This could be very interesting to play out in a show... if the show is going in that direction. Of course, we don't know if it is (or how well it would be done even if it was).

Haven't seen it yet. Did this episode at least show how Faunus are oppressed in Remnant?

This episode reminded me of what I hate so much about this series.

This series is vastly more interesting when it focuses on sociopolitical conflicts, facing human antagonists, but it keeps on trying to give the Grimm focus.

Hecm, I wouldn't mind having this story retold without the Grimm - Humanity has won against the Grimm...now they have to fight each other, etc.

One wonders why you still deign to grace it with your patronage. Does the word "waifu" factor somewhere in the cost/benefit calculations?

What, you can't watch a series you don't like unless you're doing it to crush on a character? What a weird thing to say.

Ozpin mentioned a radio, so I assume that at the very least country-wide communication is possible without Dust still.

It's safe to assume that Dust really is the wonderfuel for just about everything. If your Aura and Semblance don't cut it, a judicious use of Dust will. Ironwood's roboarmy runs on Dust. Bullets run on Dust. Machines run on Dust.

I'm still kind of perplexed as to how knocking one Tower will disable others though. I mean, if one mother-router in, say, California, explodes, routers in other states work just fine, right?

Yep that's right. This system doesn't particularly make sense from a technical perspective if this were designed to work anything like the actual internet does so...

...magic?

[up][up] Seems likely given the narrator's comment about it being poetic

[up] It's essentially Remnant's internet, Cinder did hack among other thing, Beacon's secrity;s system, the sorting algorithm for the tournament matches and Ironwood's scroll, so I assume viruses are possible. If that;s the case, shutting down the other towers would be a failsafe to prevent the viruses from taken down the other towers. This forces me to assume that Remnant is shitty a developing antiviruses

@Ninety - Riiiight, because I complain about few things, it clearly means I hate everything about the show.

Also, there's no waifu factor involved here. Only husbando factors.

This is still stupid. Regarding the virus thing, can't the other towers just shut their communication with the infected one down rather than just getting turned off entirely? Quarantine it?

Also, Grimm are becoming more terrifying by the minute. In-universe, at least.

I doubt they purposefully designed it that way since that's a pretty big design flaw.I think thats just the way the system works.

The fact it just happens to aline with Ozpin's beliefs is just a happy coincidence.

There might be environmental causes that prevent a three tower system from working but are overcome by adding a fourth tower.

I'm assuming the radio was Dust-powered, too.

Isn't that almost what's happening already with Cinder? She's just using Grimm to overrun the Kingdoms because they're an insanely destructive and cost-effective tool to use given you just need to lure them where you want them to go.

You might change your mind if the Grimm become more of a threat though. Maybe you're just saying it because the Grimm are just weaksauce right now. =p
