If it has no flavor at all...then why even use it as an ingredient in the first place!?

Poor animals mutilated for no reason is fact of life. Manta Rays suffer for "medicinal purposes" that dont even work.

That describes a lot of Chinese traditional medicine (to be fair, it probably also describes many other cultures' traditional medicines, but China's the one with the billion dollar market behind it).

Welp, I should have seen this coming. If any judges were going to properly convey the level of dicksucking required in this fight, it'd be the arm candy from the Regiment. I want to believe the basic-tier switcheroo that Mana's chowing down on Souma's dish, but given the writer now believes a *pie* is a good way to stuff 5 different cultures together... Also being able to smell it all despite the cover being down. Not even Akira Hayama was pulling that nonsense off as the master of spice. Apparently Asahi's cooking is so good it now breaks reality.

So. When are we gonna see all the Chinese people get offended that Chinese cuisine only gets represented by "shark fin", and call it a day?

French got the pie, Italian gets the pasta, Indian has the spices, Turkish has the ice cream... Shark fin doesn't represent anything about Chinese cuisine, because as everyone said, the fin itself has no taste.

Never mind all that thing about the variety that exist in Chinese cuisine that we "learned" when fighting Kuga and his Sichuan cuisine. Never mind Hishoko and her Chinese medicinal cooking.

Nope, just shark fin... which is more about flaunting wealth and prestige rather than cooking.

...Actually, I suppose the same could be said with the other cuisines. I don't really know much about French cuisine, but the pie sounds like such a lame representation of it...

The fin itself has no taste, but it's used to provide a crunchy texture. Pretty sure you don't just throw it into a pot of water, boil it and serve it like that. The other ingredients in the dish provide the flavor.

That being said, I do think I remember people who reviewed it saying that the primary appeal is really the fact that it's like the stereotypical rich people/high cuisine in east Asia. Whether it's actually good or not isn't the point. Which... kind of goes against Shokugeki's themes, so I'd like it if that was intentional.

Oh yeah, the flavour is in the soup that the fin gets served in.

I thought qualifying the Chinese criteria simply by putting in shark fin, because it's a "Chinese-exclusive ingredient" is really damn lame. I missed the part where they said the soup that goes with the shark fin is actually in the pie-thing too. My bad.

I agree with what you said. Would be nice if this later becomes a minus point precisely because the shark fin totally missed the point.

It honestly contextualizes a lot...but man, the road to get here was so garbage lol.

I'm 99% sure this flashback and what happened to Mana is meant to explain why Azami did what he did. But yea, doesn't justify them being really shitty parents lol

In person, he's the one who initiates the flashback by telling Erina how him and Mana met and he's back to his original hairstyle from his childhood

To be fair, the Azami/Mana parallel reflects Asahi/Erina more closely than Souma/Erina. At least Souma hasn't kidnapped his would-be partner with the explicit intent of using her. This also isn't the only parallel romance plot, as Jouichiro gave the same advice of 'find someone you want to cook for' to Souma. So grand scale, it's still fine. Up close, though... Sorry, Souma, you're looking the same.

I think its blatantly meant to parallel Soma/Erina given Azami's "I'll make you say my food is good" toward Mana, and the latter is basically a non-Tsundere version of her daughter.

It doesn't look like Azami was even seriously pursuing her until after he succeeded in getting her to like his food

I get it Omega, you hate this arc, you hate this series, and you hate everything about this.

But I'd rather discuss things than just reiterating things that have been said for months already.

Ive been finding enjoyment in how much its collapsing in on itself. At this point just watching it continue to worsen is its own thrill!
