The funny thing is that Drew originally just wanted to be a producer because he knew his own limitations as an improv performer. The network had no interest in Americanizing the show until Drew offered to host, since he was quite a big name at the time (he was an A-list TV star and is still in the B-list celebrity range). Drew enjoyed Hoedown because he was fairly good at it but compared to some of the more open-ended musical numbers the regular performers did Hoedown was awfully regimented and restrictive.

There was an offscreen producer that everyone hated, though. He would nix a lot of suggestions, even one time criticizing an audience member behind Drew who was yawning during the explanation of a game.

[up]That was the British one, yeah? The one who vetoed Cosby And Hitler?

I loved the outtakes for that episode. They constantly make fun of him.

Yeah, I'd say they just need to play more games. I think the only reason that certain reused jokes are more noticeable is that there isn't as much variety yet. Once they start mixing it up (bring back narrate), it should improve a lot. They're already starting to move in that direction.

I really liked the game they played in the early years of the UK show where they picked a literary style to take turns telling a story in. However, not only does that require the players to intimately understand a writer's style (why I thought they dropped it), I now realize that it's also really something that doesn't play on television well. They're just talking heads up there. Even on World's Worst they do more gesturing.

I think another explanation for the sameyness is that they want to give fans of the old show some familiarity; whether or not you like them, stuff like the "things you can say about X but not about your girlfriend" were always popular, so it makes sense they'd start off with that stuff to make sure they got an audience. Once they get a consistent viewership they'll probably start branching off more and taking more risks.

Besides, any show often takes a few episodes to find itself; it's why I usually don't write a show off until I've seen a decent chunk of it. Unless the first few are So Bad Its Horrible.

I really gotta say, I hope that wasn't actually a cup of pee in that game of Helping Hands. [lol] That guy really got into it. I can put up with guests if they can all be that fun. He actually contributed.

I'm glad Gary Anthony Williams came back. He was good but underutilized last time.

The top down camera skit would be better if they stopped reusing the exorcist jokes.

The penguin one by colin was great.

Yeah, he's pretty awesome.

[up]I know what you mean; every top-down game so far has had a Poultergeist/Exorcist/Other Ghosty Thing so they can do a "walking on the walls" joke. It's funny, but I'd rather they not run it into the ground.

Three-headed singer was brilliant.

Yeah, things are getting a tad predictable with some aspects of the show. Sideways Scene will always switch to a paranormal genre. The guest will always be on at least three times, at the expense of the fourth cast member (but on the plus side, Colin, Ryan and Wayne do as much work as ever). Aside from one episode this season, all the cast members will "win".

It's not completely ruining the show by any stretch of the imagination, but it's remarkably annoying.

Yeah, I think they're overusing the guest stars, mainly because it reduces the flexibility of what they can do with the rest of the show. Sometimes it leads to awesome stuff like that Three-Headed-Broadway Star game, but a lot of times it's just the special guest standing there with the rest of the cast acting around them.

The first couple of digs Ryan made at Mitt Romney were fun, but it's starting to date the show, making me wonder why they held these episodes for over a year.

Is it me or was each of the last 5 episodes about bringing half-naked women so that the guys can have fun with them?

They are over-reliant on that. I was hoping that Colin and Ryan were going to rebel against that after the Olympic synchronized swimmers, but I think they were just disturbed by them being so young and wearing so little. Mostly being so young. But they were apologizing to them and trying not to touch them.

Oh, and there was the one where Ryan opened a scene by asking the guest what time tomorrow she'd be firing her agent.

Coming back in a few days! What did you guys think about the season so far?

  • I like a lot of the new games
  • Aisha Tyler makes a very fun host. She has her own quirks, and isn't trying to be too much like Drew or Clive.
    • However, she never really gets out from behind the desk. This also serves to explain why all of the cast "win" every episode, as a troper earlier on this page had issue with.
  • The show tends to have a lot of celebrity guests, which is kinda ehh... Some work better than others.
  • I miss certain cast members (Greg, Chip, Brad, Kathy), but it is nice to see some new faces, and especially some new black comics (Keegan, Gary)
  • Addendum to the three above, I'd love it if Drew came on at least one episode either as a guest or as one of the four chairs

I was watching a lot of older games and videos, and I found a collection of Chip clips. Man, he and Wayne had one hell of a bromance. Also, because of this, I was introduced to a game I don't remember watching before: Bartender.

[up][up]Looking back on the collections, the show has always had a lot of sexual humor with its guests and occasionally audience members. Anyone remember the Chyna episode?

Last week, they had to separate Colin and Ryan for probably the first time since halfway through the UK version. I wish that could continue. Put Wayne, Ryan, Colin, and maybe Greg and Brad on a rotation through two regular seats, and have the other two chairs showcase new people.
