The City of Caelumvale…

One of the largest cities on the continent of Almara, Caelumvale has a huge population. It lies in warm southeast, where spring and summer are pleasant, and fall and winter are mild. Within, there lay many opportunities, drawing in people by the hundreds. Caelumvale is renowned for its vast market district, which has sprung up around the Noble Quarter, a massive ring around the center of the city filled with shops of all kinds. Within that ring is the Noble Quarter itself, the section of the city for the wealthy and the noble. Only the very finest of homes like in this district. It is here that visiting nobility and even royalty stay, as well. In the very center of the city lies Tessilay Tower, where the Lord Mayor Arlai Tessilay resides. The tower stretches to the skies, visible from almost everywhere in the city.

Outward from the market district, to the west, lays the Theater District. Popularly known as the ‘Dream District’, it is here that elaborate plays are preformed. While they aren’t cheap, the fee to see such plays is not out of the grasp of most citizens of Caelumvale. The Dream District also holds the massive Carail Theater. Named for the famous playwright Farthing Carail, the biggest and most elaborate of plays are staged here. The Dream District is filled with the often-eccentric actors and playwrights, who make their homes there as well. To the west, opposite of the Dream District, lays the Guild Quarter. The Guild Quarter is, rather self-explanatorily, home to the various Guilds of Caelumvale. Rumor has it that the fabled Thieves’ Guild… does not work out of this district at all, but most official guilds of the city inhabit this district. Northward, the city’s magic academy resides. Almagest’s Academy of Arcane Arts is a vast building, with a huge library and a massive number of teachers and students. It is equipped perfectly for the study and practice of magic. Some people come from other continents to learn magic at the Academy. To the south lies the Caelumvale Port. Airships carrying goods across the country, even across oceans, and here the drop goods and passengers, or pick them up. Within the city also lies the Caelumvale Museum, exhibiting artifacts from all across the world.

Surrounding all of this lays residential areas, scattered taverns and inns, shops, and a vast spiderweb of alleys and tunnels. Many of the tunnels lead below…

It’s a well-known fact that a vast network of catacombs occupies the space beneath Caelumvale. It is very difficult to guard or monitor this place, and it has come to house various, often dangerous, creatures. Dealings of dubious legality often occur in the catacombs beneath Caelumvale…

Surrounding Caelumvale is a sturdy wall, built to defend the city from any possible attack. It has stood for years upon years, and has never shown one sign of faltering. Beyond is the fields and wilderness of the world outside, a place only for the adventurous to brave.

Welcome to Caelumvale.

This is Caelumvale, a mostly-freeform fantasy RP taking place in a city known as Caelumvale! Here's some ground rules.

  • The GMs for this RP are Moerin and myself.
  • The setting resembles the late 1700s/early 1800s, or comparable to the Enlightenment era, in technology level. There are some exceptions to this rule, including airships and some steampunk-esque technology. If you want to make some addition to this, it will require approval from either Moerin or myself.
  • Standard fantasy fare, as far as races go, applies. However, you may also make original races. They, too, require GM approval.
  • The RP is mostly freeform, about all different things that happen in the city of Caelumvale. There's no grand plot, just the adventures of all the different characters. While this means the tone may very a great deal, I would like to point out that the setting is generally fairly light and I would like to keep it that way.
  • The Thieves' Guild does not exist. Really. It is entirely fictitious. Stop trying to look for it because it doesn't exist. >.> <.<
  • Be sure to have fun!

The idea for magic is that it's... pretty basic in where it comes from(mana and all), and is pretty freeform in what you can do with it.

Short of reality warping an instant-death spells and stuff like that, it's probably fine.

  • Name: Pandora
  • Age: 19
  • Gender: Female
  • Race: Beastman/'Foxgirl'
  • Appearance: "The nice clothes were provided by a... 'generous' noblewoman."
  • Profession: Con Artist.
  • Personality: Constantly grinning and ever polite, Pandora will rip you off with a cheerful smile and a wave. Not out of malicious intent, but she needs income somewhere. A merchant who specialises in 'magic artefacts', she will sell these fake items at 'fair' prices, then move on before her illusory magic wears off and reveals the artefact as a mundane, broken item that most definitely doesn't grant luck or boost physical capabilities. Is easily swayed by money or flattery, however.
  • Equipment/Weapons:
    • Just a pile of random junk she pretties up for sale.
  • Abilities:
    • Illusion Magic. Is able to make items appear as something else, specifically. Lasts a few days without Pandora to renew the magic, however.
  • Brief Backstory: Just a poor fox girl doing what she must for a living, though she's at least come to enjoy her line of work. Other than that... just an unremarkable individual in the grand scheme of things.

  • Name: Daria Rintike
  • Age: 24
  • Gender: Female
  • Race: Human
  • Appearance: No arms to hug you with!
  • Profession: Bounty Hunter
  • Personality: Seems cold and aloof to everyone around her. Keeps her job and her personal affairs very separate. She is capable of being kind but it's more of a passing feeling than anything that she truly wants to do.
  • Equipment/Weapons:
    • Prosthetic Arms: The arms that Daria has are operated through magic and available technology. At first they were a chore to handle but as the years passed, Daria has gotten used to them. Now it's like she hasn't lost her limbs! ... Kind of. Offers enhanced strength to the point where handling her sword is also second-nature.
      • Pushing the arms too far will result in them breaking down even on the spot.
    • Two-Handed Sword: Daria's trusty sword made of hardened black metals. Capable of leaving a deep gash in tough steel.
  • Abilities:
    • Magic: The only magic Daria is capable of using is manipulating her arms.
    • Swordfighter: Daria isn't an ameteur with a blade.
  • Brief Backstory: The daughter of a man by the name of Alessandro Rintike. He was a famed bounty hunter back in the day. Even during his escapades he took his daughter along. Daria grew up wanting to be like her dad, much to Alessandro's dismay. It was partly his fault for that. Now with the old man retired, Daria took up the sword to continue her father's job. One faithful job cost both of her arms when she was nineteen. Luckily a family friend was able to fix her up.

  • Name: Thaddeus Mora
  • Age: 72
  • Gender: Male
  • Race: Human
  • Appearance:A generally pleasant looking old man, if only slightly too well of for a man his age ; shoulder length, steely colored hair with inexplicable veins of red hang down just past his shoulders. His face is often caught in a warm grin, but with one too few wrinkles lining it. He's thin by just about anyone's standards, but lean and muscled in the way of a man forty years his junior. These small idiosyncrasies become only more glaring with prolonged observation, giving an seemingly innocuous old man an aura of the strange, the alien. He wears a simple leather shirt and cloth pants, under a pitch black cloak.
  • Profession: Necromancer, and a damned good one. Communicates with the dead, divines the future, discovers the past, and raises corpses on the behalf of varying benefactors. Occasionally lectures at the Mages Guild, advising up and coming necromancers in the safe, ethical, and practical uses Necromancy.
  • Personality: More or less amicable, if a overly eccentric; he makes an effort to be a friend to those he's met, and see's where things go from there. He's interested in expanding his power and influence, like most, but he's no Overlord. There are certain lines he'll avoid crossing considering the use of his art, but he understands more than most that remaining flexible in character isn't always a fault, especially for the greater good of those around him.
  • Equipment: A black wooden staff, the head of which forms the shape of a bulls horns. A single, polished black gem, carefully carved into the image of a cat's skull, lies floating in-between the horns. He carries a long, slender, bone knife tucked into a hilt on his hip. Indistinct symbols line the flat of the blade, loosing a grey fog into the air. He's otherwise unarmed. A large satchel lies slung at the opposite hip as his knife, carrying a flask of water, some dried meat, dried fruit, and spark-stone.
  • Abilities: As mentioned before, he's a potent necromancer, a virtuoso in all matters death and undead. His abilities as such are variable as they are macabre:
    • Necrotic Energy: Can strike foes directly with Necromantic energy, in the forms of bolts, or beams.
    • Summoning...: the spirits of the recently dead in his area. He can do this automatically as a result of his experience, but will need to offer more mana for less favorable circumstances, like summoning the long dead, particularly powerful spirits, or a large number (more than seven, in his case) of spirits. He can summon them for conversation, advice, and even foresight, although any predictions of the future tend to be vague, and only high probabilities. Sending them to battle is also an option, but unless the spirit (or spirits) is particularly strong, the extent of their assault will be psychological. They are nearly immune to mundane weapons and non-magic means of death. Nearly. Can be repelled also by holy energies.
    • Raising Corpses: He can imbue the bodies of the dead with his own mana. The creatures will be slow, due to the lingering effects of death on the body, unkillable unless the head is removed and/or destroyed. For the price of extra mana , he can imbue a body with a spirit, creating a much more powerful (and speedy) undead. They're weak against fire, magical or no. Also vulnerable to holy energies.
    • Possession: He can send spirits to possess more weak-minded/weak-willed enemies, and have them assist in the battle.
    • Astral Projection: Can send his spirit from his body, increasing his own necrotic powers significantly and acquiring ghost like abilities, but leaves his body completely vulnerable to attack. Must remain 30 meters from his own body, and can be thrown back immediately by magical attacks.
    • Blood for Mana: He can restore his mana at the expense of his own life-energy. Restoring the whole of his mana from complete exhaustion would have him nearly unconscious.
    • Stall Death: Can hold death off from a person for a night, but this leaves him entirely exhausted of mana.
  • Brief Backstory: Originally hailing from Venacea, a prosperous city-state far to the South-East of Caelumvale, Thaddeus was driven out of his business and his home when, during a dialogue that he established in-between a noble and his passed father, the noble found out that his brother had visited the necromancer first. The two brothers were feuding over who was to inherit the father's estate, and so the noble had accused Thaddeus of being bought out by his brother previously, conjuring a simple illusion to cheat him out of what was rightfully his. He was a powerful sorcerer, yes, but he would rather err on the side of caution in this case; he's waiting for the two brothers to off each-other before he even thinks of returning. Business is a little quicker in Caelumvale, anyway.

[up][up]Hmmm...

Firstly, I noticed mention of him being able to read the future. If he can actually do that, I'd like that to be removed, since reading the future is a bad thing for R Ps. On the other hand, I don't see it mentioned in his abilities section.

I'll have to put a bit more thought into this decision, still.

Interested. How about this?

  • Name: Mortimer Kendig

  • Age: 34 (not as old in halfling years)

  • Gender: Male

  • Race: Halfling

  • Appearance: Is three feet tall with thick, curly black hair and flashing grey eyes. He wears a purple sweater over a white undershirt. He wears black trousers with no shoes. His feet are large and hairy. He has a boyish looking grin on his face most times and could be mistaken for a slightly, chubby human, albeit one with pointed ears and leathery soles.

  • Profession: Adventurer

  • Personality: Mortimer is a friendly halfling with a longing for adventure. He is loyal to his friends and loves a good card game. Mortimer is prone to not following orders if it interferes with his moral compass. He is somewhat immature. While he does love a good adventure, he isn't often fond of fighting.

  • Equipment/Weapons: Carries an empty hip falsk and fights with a sling

  • Abilities: Like most halflings, Kendig is adept at climbing and is quite quick. He isn't too accurate with his sling but he is a quick shot. He can fit in small places

  • Brief Backstory: Mortimer Kendig was a bit restless at his home village. Not content to follow in his father's trade, the halfling joined a party of adventurers when they passed through. After completing their quest, the halfling broke away from the party and travelled to Caelumvale to see the sights and to get into another adventure.

Alright, firstly, Thaddeus 1 is accepted if he can't actually read the future.

Thaddeus 2 might need a new name, though you don't have to, and should probably be a bit more fleshed-out personality-wise at least.

And now, um...:

  • Name: Emi Demmric
  • Age: 14
  • Gender: Female
  • Race: Nem
    • Nem are largely human in appearance. However, there are some important differences. All Nem have black hair, and their eyes are usually red or yellow. In addition, Nem rarely reach heights beyond 4'6, 4'0 to 4'3 being the average for an adult. They are usually slender, and all Nem are also very, very pale. Nem are best-suited for activity at night, having excellent night vision, but nothing keeps them from activity during they day aside from personal preference. Nem are rather physically fragile in comparison to other races. However, they are quite fast. Nem have a notoriously low alcohol tolerance, due to their small size.
  • Appearance: Only 3'3 in height and likely to con you into buying a fake diamond ring for ten times what it's actually worth.
  • Profession: Emi is unashamedly a Con Artist
  • Personality: Emi is cheerful, playful, and an utterly brilliant liar. She's also quite friendly, and rather unassuming in appearance. This lends her perfectly to being a con artist. She finds conning people unbelievably fun, though she limits herself to people who can afford it. Emi is a bit greedy when it comes to getting money, or items she can sell, but at the same time she's often extremely loose with the money she gets. She's also very willing to share it with people she knows(provided they know of her conning).
  • Equipment/Weapons: Emi carries a small knife with her at all times. In addition to this, she usually has a series of fake rings and the like.
  • Abilities: Brilliant lying, pickpocketing, and generally good stealth and infiltration skills.
  • Brief Backstory: Emi has no memory of her family, having been abandoned when she was very young. As she grew up, she began to train herself to be a thief and a con artist, and has perfected her skills more and more as she's grown older. At fourteen, she is excellent at deception and fully capable of convincing someone that a wholly fake ring is very real.

@goodisgood: Like Anno said, the future reading thing probably won't work, although since you didn't list it in his abilities section I think it's fine. I actually rather like the idea of a good-aligned necromancer, too, so I say he's acceptable aside from that one point.

[up][up]The only problem I see is it's a little sparse, but I suppose that's fine. Well, that and he has the same first name as goodisgood's character, but I suppose we can always refer to them by their surnames if it starts to get confusing. Unless Anno has any big objections I'd say he's accepted, although if you want to beef up his profile a bit that would be most appreciated.

[up]Ninjanno. >.> Will look over this in a bit, then.

Edit: Emi looks fine, so unless anyone has any objections, she's accepted.

Alrighty, here I go.

  • Name: Kevander Argarensis
  • Age: 25
  • Gender: Male
  • Race: Centaur
  • Appearance: Looks like this, but without the twin strands of long hair, and is almost always wearing a white shirt that cuts off halfway between the shoulders and elbows, with a butcher's apron on top of it. His apron is usually blue, but he might wear green or red sometimes.
  • Profession: Butcher
  • Personality: A kind, positive, albeit boisterous man, Kev takes pride in his work, and enjoys spending his days providing the people of Caelumvale with meats of the highest quality, and seeing the smiles on their faces when they see the fruits of his labor.
  • Equipment/Weapons:
    • Butcher shop: A 'cozy' shop on a street corner in Caelumvale, with a bedroom on the second floor, and stocked with the appropriate equipment, such as knives and mail gloves.
  • Abilities:
    • Butchery: Given a knife, Kevander is a veritable Michelangelo of meatcutting.
    • Barbeque: Kev is also known to have some skill with the grilling of meats, as on warmer days he will try to attract customers by cooling and selling some
    • "Retired" Beastmaster: Kevander can dominate and control the mind of unintelligent animals, and communicate telepathically with wiser, more intelligent ones.
  • Brief Backstory: Kevander was born the son of a seer in one of the many tribes of centaurs. However, he was born with the unusual gift - at least, unusual for the son of a seer, who cared more for divining information from the stars - of being able to understand and even will animals. He spent whatever free time he had in his childhood playing in the fields and ponds with the creatures of nature, as he had no knack for stargazing, which his father attempted to apprentice him in. From his hobby, and from spending time with the predators as much as the prey, he eventually learned from them the secrets and techniques needed to perfectly cut the flesh of all sorts of animals. Spending more time after that, he learned of the enjoyment others could have from perfectly cut and prepared animals, but his father refused to allow the son of a seer to be anything so lowly.
When he reached adulthood, he decided to run away from the tribe, for he did not enjoy the thought of a future spent contemplating the stars. He went to Caelumvale, selling an antique staff he had brought with him in order to open up a small butcher shop, where he's been for the past few years.
