[up][up]Which they are getting royally dumped on from just about every outlet that does games journalism. A new engine will come, and probably soon because if they get the same kind of reaction from folks post-release of ESVI, for the same reason, they be pretty much screwed.

They've already said ESVI and Starfield will use Creation.

Oh really when?

[up]They've said a lot of things.

If they do use Gamebryo, then the games will be nuked from high, medium and low Earth orbit. Not even Hines and Howard are that stupid.

Tam: And being dumped on means exactly jack. Especially given the fact there is no such thing as just simply switching engines. You know the same engine they already straight up said they are in the process of modifying even more for Starfield and further for Elder Scrolls VI despite the commentary. They are not going to magically pull a new engine out of thin air, give up years of development and modification on the engine they have and lose the expertise they built up in doing so. Chances are very very good it will still be a variant of Creation Engine likely modified even further. They have been replacing it piecemeal already.

[up]Then they are not going to sell the games in sufficient quantities to justify the development time. Period. Losing some money now by junking a shit engine and using a better one and hence making lots more money by avoiding the reputational damage mega-tsunami that using Gamebryo yet again makes far more economic sense than sticking to their guns. And they wouldn't be pulling an engine out of thin air - there are other ones out there. Keeping Gamebryo is the sunk cost fallacy writ large.

It isn't a sunk cost fallacy by any measure. Creative Engine is their tool made for what they want to do and they have been constantly modifying it since Skyrim. Yeah, they would need to pretty much pull a new engine out of thin air with all the same general set of boxes ticked and working almost the same as the last one for it to not require a large amount of time and money spent to do the switch.

A new engine would require literally retraining quite a few people and reworking everything almost from scratch or spending time and money hiring new ones and getting them up to speed. You know things that tend to cost a lot of money aside from the large cost of acquiring a license for a new engine. Dumping an engine already in use for a new one once you have started using it almost never works out and leads to both cost overrun and inevitable delays which means more money spent. Last I checked they had already begun work on two separate games each with its own set of planned if not already carried out modifications.

There was never such a thing as a simple, cheap, or fitting switch to a new engine that would not be expensive by any measure to replace their in-house engine. For all, we know they will do what they have done several times over and that is include 3rd party components like Havok or devel new ones. It is cheaper and easier for them to build and modify their own tools based on what they want to be done than to adapt a completely new engine from the ground up.

Fallout 76 is a flop for reasons well outside the engine it uses. It was a blind and lazy attempt to climb on the survival bandwagon in hopes of easy cash and a means to test the new multi-player modifications. That and quite a few parts of the game scream we cut corners to push this out.

99% of the assets are blatantly recycled from 4. I'm not sure they actually spent that much time or money on this game, save for optimizing it for multiplayer. The guns are the same, the vault suits are pretty much the same, character creation is the same.....

That is in what I mean by lazy corner cutting. They recycled assets and squeezed them into an engine modified yet again. There are some new assets mixed in but still it is pretty obvious they shoehorned in the FO 4 material to just get it out. Hopefully, anything in the future will have new material instead of being recycled like that.

Don't get me wrong I like the look of the commonwealth but they really could have put more effort into it. Maybe take a few leads from some of the location modders and spice things up a bit. Like the snowy biome mods for example. Though to be fair 76 looks like it has a lot more plant life and I thought the nuclear weapon effects were pretty cool especially the weather shift in the area of the strike.

This isn't a full Fallout game. I don't think this is meant to be any more of "A Fallout Game" than Fallout Shelter is.

Then it shouldn't have been sixty bucks. If it was free to play with some monetization, no one would care. Well, okay, people would care, but they'd be much more forgiving of the glitches, and the whole "massive sale less than two weeks out that screws over everyone who already bought it" thing wouldn't be an issue. Blatantly recycling Fallout 4 would probably also be considered fine.

I've said it before, but companies really need to look to Path of Exile and Warframe for examples of how to properly monetize a game.

rabbit: I think I may agree on that.

Warframe was fun for a while not a bad way to go about monetizing the game.

Fallout 76 has pretty bad "MMO Lag"

Where you press the trigger and watch the bullet fly out and hit your enemy, only for the enemy to squeeze in one last attack before it processes that you hit it and it dies.

I'm debating playing Fallout 4 again but am wondering if I should try Mods to make it more enjoyable.

The thing is, I'm not sure which to do as I'm an Xbox Oner.

The Firearms mod. You get a bunch of pretty good looking and fun real-world firearms. The creators have purposely been building the mod to include the console side of the aisle. The cheat file just in case to help fix some minor issues, the unofficial community patch, and maybe the weather and/or darkness mods.

Maybe I’m alone in this, but I’ve never understood the appeal of modding in real-world firearms. The entire series is low-key sci-fi with robots and lasers and aliens and all that nonsense, and people decide “You know what, I want to fire an AK-47”.

Granted, some of the guns look pretty impressive but at the end of the day it’s just a gun, and those are already a dime a dozen.

Honestly I can't stand the design of the pipe weapons and the laser pistols in 4 look too blocky. I want sleeker-looking guns. Not necessarily state of the art, but something that looks modern. These clunky, over-sized Fallout guns just don't done it.

That said, I'm not gunsmith and I can't tell a Beretta from a Glock. The aesthetic overall though is strangely more satisfying than any of the pipe weapons IYAM.

As for "it just being a gun," well, 4 kind of made guns redundant the moment they made guns immortal and never, ever break down. I guess doubling down on the superficial nature of the weapons can't hurt.

rant went from occasionally having to replace pistols to sticking to the same 10mm gun for the entire first half of the game. Immersion f-cking ruined.

Is that not what you use your guns for in real life? What else are you going to do with the literal tons of loot you get from people who constantly try to murder you?

My most recent playthrough I swapped out my beginning 10 mil for ....

another 10 mil. It had the Wounding legendary effect applied to it, and an automatic receiver. It was ungodly powerful.

I was going around taking out Sentry bots with it, and I used it to kill the Castle Mirelurk Queen.

Yeah das right I took down a sea monster with a piddly little 10 mil pistol

Yep. Legendaries vary between complete Game Breakers and absolutely useless, with nothing in between. I understand that they were trying to make the weapons a bit more interesting, but some basic balance checks like "does this bleeding proc stack every time you hit the enemy with a rapid-fire weapon?" would have been nice.

MMO-style loot drops are part of what kept taking me out of the game, really. I don't want to crabs and bandits to randomly drop elite armor and rifles, I want to dig them out of an unmarked janitor's closet.
