I admit I've tapered off from reading the manga. Only clocked back in to watch Saitama fight Orochi because I really wanted to see what happened there.

Just waiting for Black Sperm, Psykos, and Monster Garou.

[up][up]ONE is writing the additions to the manga so it's not filler. It's more a case of him wanting to expand on the story for the redo. It's just had mixed success so far.

Right, it's not really filler. It's decompression, a practice common in western comic books. Decompressed storytelling is a style of writing where a story that should only take one or two issues to tell is instead stretched out to six or twelve. Stuff unrelated to the plot is expanded, fight scenes are stretched out, fluff dialogue is added to pad out scenes, splash pages are thrown in, etc. etc.

Decompression isn't always a bad thing. Stretching out the story creates room for characterization, development, and humanization of characters. It also opens the door to more organic exposition of the plot. Notably, the manga/anime was always a decompressed version of the comparatively sparse webcomic.

But the Monster Association arc goes above and beyond the decompression seen in earlier parts of the story.

Wait, isn't decompression a Japanese comic-book technique that the US market later adopted after the Bronze Age?

It's decompression, a practice common in western comic books.

It was common in manga long before western comic books. In fact, I'm pretty sure that western authors liked it because of its cinematic and meticulous feel, and then proceeded to use it themselves, as [up] said.

Honestly, at this point, I'm just waiting for it to end. Arc Fatigue set in a long time ago and I'm tired of chapter after chapter after chapter of "Some S-Class dude, whichever the f*ck one we're on about this time, has an epic brawl with some monster or another".

I'm long past ready to get back to Saitama, Genos, King, the Blizzard group, etc. Characters I actually care about and am invested in. I don't care how many monsters Atomic Samurai can dice up with a single sword slice, because who the f*ck is Atomic Samurai?

-

There is. And this went too far the other direction.

This arc turned into Generic Shonen Anime dozens of chapters ago, except without the emotional attachment to the characters that one builds up while watching their favorite shonen protagonists beat up bad guys. It's an endless parade of action scenes between minor characters.

O.K. I think I understand you now.

Not sure why Groose is there, but I guess there isn't anyone else who'd make a good sub for King.

I personally just want to get to the climax fight of this arc. It was an incredible fight in ONE's webcomic chicken-scratch, I'm salivating at the thought of getting it in Murata's godlike art.

Yup, this reveal was one of the big things I've been waiting for since I read this arc in the webcomic. More big moments I can't wait for: Darkshine vs Garou, Tatsumaki doing the thing, King doing the thing, Black Sperm doing the thing, Garou doing the thing, and Saitama vs Garou.

In which Saitama also does the thing and sends Garou into orbit.

I've missed the last couple of chapters but the monstage to all of the S-Classers getting mollywhopped seemed...sudden? Have we been progressively watching Atomic Samurai and Pig God get wrecked? Last I followed Child Emperor and Puri Puri Prisoner were the only ones on the losing end.

I'm not caught up all the way but Atomic Samurai has been fighting Black Sperm for several chapters.

By the way, watching Season 2 of the anime on Toonami, I wasn't hot on how it ended the tournament. The anime rushing through stuff improved the story when it was boring stuff like the battles against the monster association chumps, but I think Saitama going after Goketsu should have been stretched out more since the moment doesn't really get a chance to sink it.

Also I plan on putting those volume covers together when they eventually all come out.

Come to think about it, besides Gyoro Gyoro just going by Psykos in original manga, wasn't she also inside the meat puppet all along instead of remote control like this time? Or do I remember wrong... Might actually have had been remote control too but without second body inside?

Grahf Since: Jan, 2001
#4017: Dec 15th 2019 at 9:45:45 AM

Even in the original Psykos is not in Gyoro Gyoro, it's just a trick . I don't think that they explained the why of the meat puppet as in-depth as they did here, but it was still the case. It's around what most websites refer to as Chapter 67 of the original webcomic.

This also might mean that the next chapters we get are going to be Darkshine vs. Garou with the latter's limiter breaking.

The Viz release of the manga just got to Saitama meeting Flashy Flash. Saitama hearing about how strong Monster King Orochi is and getting excited to fight him without realizing he'd already killed him is pretty funny.

Been a couple more chapters of the original webcomic.

Sweet Mask himself confirms that he's been monsterized for a while, but by all accounts he's been like that for YEARS now and he's slowly losing his mind, so he wants to try and make sure that his ideals are passed before he loses himself.
