Whoo. There. With any luck, that'll be a sight more put together than than the previous upload. I really need to try and proofread these things better. Either that or find someone to proofread for me. Either way, it's been cleaned up and edited, (again) so it should be a bit easier to read now. Sorry about that.

So lately I've been thinking, ('A dangerous pastime/I know...) and I'm having second thoughts about making this a community project. On the on hand, it might be nice to have some help; get stories out faster, take a bit of a load off my hands, etc. But on the other hand, I'm concerned that if I let someone else take the reigns, it might not be as good as if it were just me writing it. That it wouldn't have a consistent voice, that there might be inconsistent characterization and plotting, that sort of thing. Maybe I'm just being selfish, but I've put a lot of work (and still am,) into planning this thing, and I don't want the actual series to end up being ripped into shreds because there's too many cooks stirring the pot. Then again, seeing as I still haven't gotten any extra help outside of brainstorming both here and elsewhere, it might end up being a moot point, but I'm not sure if I should even be looking for extra help writing-wise to begin with. I'm just not sure which route to go really.

First: It's moot point, not mute point.

Second: Make a series bible. You've already done that for most of it so just go through the character list and create details on how they should be portrayed. If you want to go one step farther, make it a rule that all stories get passed by you first before being posted.

[up]I've already been working on a bible and character profiles, come to think of it. But yeah, if I get some extra help, I think I'll go that extra step. If we're going to have consistency and quality control, we need to have some of editor or whatnot, which I guess is going to be me. Thanks.smile

EDIT: And speaking of character bibles, I was working on Sally's character profile when I ended up falling half asleep. When I finally fully woke up about half an hour later, I noticed this had somehow wound up on the page:

Which they did, though there was still the matter of finding her dad. (Who it turned out had been turned into a freaking Seaweed monster.)

I have absolutely no idea why or how I wrote that, other than that I'm pretty sure I was still trying to write Sally's profile when I half asleep. Most of it somehow still looks okay, but I guess this was just some sort of stream of consciousness thing. Mind you, pre-reboot King Max actually was something of a monster, but that's neither here nor there.tongue Anyhoo, just an amusing little f-up I thought I might as well point out. On with the show. (Or profiles in this case.)

So it's been nearly a week since I posted my pilot, and I haven't pulled in a single helping hand. Not even another brainstormer. Guess I'm on my own.

In other news, I've been working on Character Bios in the time I've been waiting. Ever since I started them doing them back in my acting classes, (I have a Bachelor's in Theater actually,) I've always done them whenever I'm working on a major project like this. Adding in all you can think of about a character — their personality, their history, their interests, where you think they'll go from here — it all helps make for a more interesting, fleshed out cast then you may have otherwise got, and it's been fun just working on them and really getting into these characters. Sonic and co. have a lot of potential, and I really want to realize it, and I think I'm a big step towards doing that.

Anyhoo, now that I know I'm probably going to have to fly solo, I guess I should start working on the series proper soon too. That said, I was wondering if I anyone was interested in being a proofreader. (Which reminds me; don't worry Numbuh, I'm still working on proofreading your SA adaptation. It's just taking a while is all.) I've come to realize that, try as I might, there are always a lot of missing words or errors of some sort when I'm finished with a story, even after I've proofread it myself. So having a second set of eyes would be a Godsend. And of course, any proofreaders can also give their thoughts on the Chapters in general if they want to. I'm not expecting them to just strictly focusing on making sure it's legible and let that be that, not unless they want to of course. If anyone's interested, just let me know. Till then, let's do it to it!

So I know I've asked this before, but is anyone interested in proofreading? I'm going to finally start writing the series proper in a day or two, so if anyone's interested, just let me know.

Also, I've been reading the last stretch of Flynn's Archie run, (seriously, anyone who hasn't read his 11 year run needs to ASAP; it's freaking awesome,) and I think we've got another Freedom Fighter; Dulcy. For those who aren't that familiar with Dulcy, she was a Freedom Fighter back in the second season of Sat AM and to a lesser extent in the early Archie comics, but she was never that big a player in the comics or all that interesting, and she left the FF years before Ian came along and got a chance to really do anything with her. She had a bigger role in Sat AM, but I was honestly content to just leave on the wayside.

And then I read Flynn's Postboot version of her, and I actually like her there. For one thing, he had the artist give her design a major overhaul, turning her from a normal bi-pedal dragon into a smaller anthro one. She looks a lot more like everyone else basically. But she also has a lot more to work with, with an actual Character Arc and issues that she had to work out in her backstory (which is completely different than what we saw in Sat AM by the way,) and I want to explore those issues in my own little series. (Okay, it's not going to be 'little' by any means, but still.) Plus she's a powerhouse. She's superstrong, can fly, and can breath fire, so she's definitely handy to have around. So she's coming along for the ride.

I'm afraid I can't help you with proof reading since I frankly don't care about non-video game characters but I can link you to this. It should at least make sure you grammar is fairly good.

[up]Eh, thanks, really, but grammar isn't what I really have a problem with, or at least not compared to my real problems. My real problems seem to be missing words and, in some cases, whole sections of dialogue entirely, including the very first line of the story in one case. I basically end up thinking I typed in words and dialogue when in fact, I didn't actually do it, even though I thought it did. And as much as I try to correct myself, there always seems to be something I miss until someone else points it out for me. That's what I'd really like someone to help me out with, and I don't think a spell-checking program is really going to be able to help much with that.

It's not a spell checking program, it's a grammar checking program. While it won't help if you're missing entire sentences, running one of my own works through it reveals that it will pick up on potential missing words. Simply put, even if it doesn't completely solve your problem, you have no real reason to not use it.

So how long do most people's chapters tend to be? I'm asking because my pilot was just 11,747 words long, and that was roughly around 26 pages or so and took me over 2 hours to personally proof read. Meanwhile, the first actual chapter of the series proper is already longer than that and I might still have at least a third of the Chapter left to go. Part of this is because being the start of the series, there's a lot of setup and introductions to go through, but I'm also wondering if some readers would just prefer to have shorter chapters regardless of whether or not the story really gets going at the of a given chapter or not. Because until Robotnik rechristens himself Eggman and takes over the Acorn Kingdom, (in an ode to a certain scene from Sat AM,) most of what's happening is talking and getting to know the characters and setting up what's to come, without a lot of action, and action is what Sonic's known for. So I don't really want to put up what I've got until I get to that point and things really get going, but at the same time, I'm concerned that a given reader isn't going to want to sit down and read a fanfic Chapter and instead want something considerably shorter. Not to say I'd trim my current Chapter down by any means, but I could always split it into smaller ones if I wanted to. I'm certainly going to have enough material to do so. Any thoughts?

It doesn't really matter. Another troper and I have been working on a fic for going on two years now and our chapters average about 4-5k words but that's because we update weekly. If we were to update every other week or every month, the chapters would be longer.

Make the chapters as long as you want them to be. What you want is the most important thing here. Only consider what other people want if you don't care one way or another, if you think another person has a good point, or if quite a few people all say the same thing.

I'd say consider what's entertaining.

Having a basic groundwork is important for making sense, but too much at once can get boring.

Which characters are important for the first major event? You could focus on those characters, and introduce others as they become relevant.

[up][up]Thanks. I guess I'll just keep on trucking along then. It's done when it's done.

[up]Well, that wasn't exactly what I was asking, but while I am introducing a number of characters, I don't think what I'm doing is really boring persay. It's just that some fans might just want to get the punching and spindashing from the getgo, whereas I'm just trying to let them get a feel for the characters and understand why things are the way they are, as well as build up to Eggman's takeover. What I think I'm going to do is start in Medium res; have the first segment start with Robotnik rechristening himself Eggman and taking over the Acorn Kingdom, and then do a How We Got Here afterwards. At least then anyone who's getting a bit bored will have something to look forward to.

So I ended up taking Numbuh's advice to heart. Sonia, Manic, and Mina were all supposed to show up in this opening arc, but the more I thought about it, and the more I tried to write them in, the more I realized that all I'd really be doing is unnecessarily bloating things and giving exposition that was already given. Besides, I've already got Sonic, Tails, Sally, Antione, Johnny, Porker, Tekno, Bunnie, and Shortfuse (albeit before he becomes Shortfuse,) as is, and the only reason that's working is because some of them like Nicole, Bunnie, and Shortfuse have only made Early Bird Cameos, while others like Porker and Tekno are still important while at the same time not being that important just yet. And I've still got Rotor, Sticks, and Chirps coming in the next Chapter or two.

On the other hand, this also means there'll be a nice trickle of new FF'ers steadily coming in as the series goes on. Sonic, Tails, Sally, Antione, Bunnie, Rotor, Nicole, Johnny, Shortfuse, Porker, Tekno, Sticks, and Chirps are going to be in the initial line-up, but the others will start to join up in short order, with some of them coming in sets. Mina, Sonia, and Manic will all join together; likewise with Amy, Cream, and Big. (Why yes, I am introducing a few characters well before they show up in the games, in case you were wondering.tongue) Everyone else will just sort of trickle in as the series goes on until I've finally got the full roster. (Whenever that may be.)

I refer you back to my post explaining how you could tell the story without having to split everyone into sub groups. Following that advice, this wouldn't really be much of an issue. Just introduce characters as they come up. If it's a bit role, give them a bit introduction and leave everything else for when they have a bigger role.

[up]That's what I am doing basically. Mina, Sonia, and Manic were always planned to be introduced as a set because they start out having formed a band together, and Amy, Cream, and Big were always going to to be introduced as part of a set simply because they're all going to be living in Green Hill, which is the focus of the second story arc. And while I've already introduced a number of characters, only some of them get real focus, with others either being supporting characters or bit players this early on. They'll all get their time to shine, but I've still got to be economic here.

That said, we'll see. I might introduce Sonia, Manic, and Mina here, I might not. It's something I'm really just going to have to play by ear.

So with the Fleetway STC online comic having been on a year long hiatus now, me not really liking the direction of the comic in general, and currently catching up on all of the classic STC issues from the beginning, I was thinking of probably doing my own fan continuation of it, only ignoring the online comic's continuity but still carrying on from the original numbering. It'll take a while to prepare though, sort of like going to Sonic School, as I am just a filthy casual fan after all

Whew. First draft of the first chapter is finally 'done.'' I'm still going to need to edit and proofread it, (and speaking of which, I'm still looking for a proofreader if anyone's interested; just let me know,) but just the fact that it's finally done after all this time is still a heck an accomplishment. And at over 19000 words and roughly 50 pages, this is gonna be a long one. This is something you're probally going to want to take in multiple sittings, just a FYI.But yeah; now to just polish up this sucker and we can finally get things going!grin

So I may have hit something of a snag. I spent the whole day today editing and cleaning up the first chapter of my fanfic, (and it's a big one,) and was all set to upload it to FF.net when all of a sudden, the site tells me there's an error and that it can't upload my document. Well, I still hadn't uploaded it to Archive, so I figured why not try that? Except when I did try it, I got an error message that said I couldn't upload there either. So both of the places I usually upload to aren't letting me upload. Is anyone else having this problem, or is it just me?

Ok, some good news. FF.net still won't let me upload, but Archive is working just fine. Once I can get it FF.net, it'll also be there, but for now, here's the Archive link. Here's hoping this is just the first of many chapters to come.smile

Just a word of warning though. At over 18000 words, this is a long first Chapter. Don't be afraid to read it in multiple sittings if you need to.
