Oh, my favorite album is definitely Abbey Road. Hands down. Although, that could just be because it was the first one I heard...

Nah, it's gotta be the incredible character of each song on Side A, followed by the only-in-your-wildest-dreams ecstasy and love of the medley, which showcases the band's entire identity in microcosm, and all closing out with those immortal words of wisdom.

But my favorite Beatles songs are hard to pin down since they're all so great. I have to mention "Get Back," "Come Together," "Hey Jude," "Help!," "From Me to You," "This Boy," and "In My Life."

Oh, and my favorite Beatle is George.

How dare you disrupt the sanctity of my soliloquy?

I like While My Guitar Gently Weeps the best. I prefer George's acoustic demo version, though.

Also, am I the only one who likes Revolution 9? I do like their more... traditional songs too. Pretty much anything by them, that people tend to like, also I do.

[up] I also enjoy Revolution no.9.

If I had to pick a favourite Beatles song it would probably be Helter Skelter. At least today.

[up][up] Agree dude. "While My Guitar Gently Wheeps" is definitely my favorite song by the group (Although I prefer the Album version then the Acoustic or the LOVE versions). Fallowed by "Strawberry Fields Forever", "I Am The Walrus", and "A Day In The Life".

2019? That's Abbey Road's 50th anniversary. They've gotta do something special for that to get people reinvigorated.

Does anyone think the generation that is old enough to remember the Beatles being contemporary proceeding to die off will have any effect on their popularity? I doubt it, and am not saying I wish for the Beatles to be forgotten, but it is an interesting thought.

As long as there are kids that do drugs, there will be kids who listen to The Beatles.

Addendum: As long as there is good music somewhere in the world, as long as a ragtag bunch of teens are starting a band somewhere, as long as someone has parents who listened to them, and as long as the rights holders can squeeze profit out of the band's good name, there will always be The Beatles.

But is it wrong to say that people who take drugs listen to the Beatles? The few stoners I know all listen to them at least.

Yes, stoners listen to the Beatles, because everyone listens to the Beatles. They're the freaking Beatles - only one of the most popular musical artists ever. Stoners are not the core of their demographic. If this was the Grateful Dead, sure. But the audience of the Beatles was never such a small demographic.

It'd be just as sensible to say, "as long as their are women/men/children/musicians/music fans/taxmen/insert noun here."

Well, I mean more so than the general public. I'm talking about fans, not just people who know of them. The general public could be expected to have that 1 CD, maybe the Red Album and Blue Album (or one or the other) if they like the music enough. If they were around when the group was still together, there's a good chance they'd have a vinyl of Meet the Beatles (if they're American, at least). Hell, maybe they've even seen Across The Universe, just giving them a little bit of credit.

But is someone from the general public going to know, say, "Long, Long, Long"? "Rain"? "Your Mother Should Know"? Freaking "Maxwell's Silver Hammer"? While the Beatles songs that were (and are) popular are all excellent, there's many more that the general public are not going to know. This knowledge lies in the hands of their fans.

(And yeah, I suppose I'm venturing into No True Scotsman territory here, but I'm just telling it like it is.)

The Beatles have sold over two BILLION albums. Do you know anyone who has never heard a single Beatles song? The Beatles are as much a part of our culture as Shakespeare, Beethoven, Groucho Marx, Van Gogh, etc. They no more belong to one class of people than Shakespeare belongs to English students.

And for your assertion that most people are not familiar with the Beatles back catalog, I'd wager most stoners aren't either. How many do you think have only heard Revolver / Sgt. Pepper's / The White Album / whatever? I bet it's tons. I bet there are millions and millions of stoners who don't listen to the Beatles at all.

You are indeed headfirst into One True Scotsman territory, which you'll notice that the very first line its page states that it is a logical fallacy. Your assertion that one must be familiar with their back catalog to remember the Beatles / be a true fan (which wasn't the original question) is a drastic and unfair shifting of goal posts.

And I'd wager that musicians / music lovers are, per capita, far more familiar with the Beatles' back catalog than the average stoner.

I was kinda trying to edge away from the stoner thing with that post and talking more in general terms of "fans" and "the general public."

That's the case for everything though. Most people could hum Beethoven's Fifth, but not many could hum his Sixth, Seventh, or Eighth.

Most people know To Be or Not to Be, but not many have read A Winters Tale or the Merry Wives of Windsor.

Yet no one could claim that Beethoven and Shakespeare are not a huge shaping force and continuing part of our current culture.

I was under the impression that behind the big ones that everyone talks about, A Winters Tale was one of Shakespeare's more popular plays.

Only because it has the greatest stage direction of all time:

"Exit, pursued by a bear."

It might be more popular, but I don't seem to hear much about it. It's certainly no Hamlet, Macbeth, Much Ado, Midsummer Night's Dream, King Lear, Othello, Julius Caesar, or Romeo and Juliet. Probably in the second tier of most known plays? Maybe?

Anyways, that's a tangent. How many people today have read all of Shakespeare? It's not a requirement to be a fan.

So THAT's what that's from!

Anyway, really, I don't consider somebody a fan of something until they start to really consume it. I apply that to myself as well. For example, I like whatever Prince songs I've heard a lot, but I don't actively seek out his music, thus, I wouldn't consider myself a Prince fan, even though I like his music. It's semantics, but it's what makes sense to me.
