@Lightblade: Not much you can do-they will never be the same, and the trade value will be minimal. They will also be considered marked for play. However, with some time and care you should be able to flatten them so they will be play-legal in sleeves. Not much else you can do, unfortunately.

It had been raining. It wasn't too bad when I arrived, but after a few hours of playing Magic in the shop, it got much worse outside and started seeping inside.

The shop's basement is actually quite prone to flooding during inclement weather. I remember being told that its problems were due to the basement being below the water table, which apparently makes it a real pain to stop. Most of the time when we're playing there we can spot the incoming water in time to get our stuff off the floor (or just have the foresight to put them on empty tables on rainy days), but this time I wasn't so lucky.

The Future of Brawl

In summary, there's been a few changes to the Brawl format;

All of these changes are effective in paper play immediately! So to recap, starting right now:

My latest idea for a Commander deck is going to be led by Aryel, Knight of Windgrace, but I might decide to give it a "Brawl Core" that can be taken into and out of the Commander deck as needed.

Are there any planes that have firearms or cannons?

[up]All kinds-Caliman for starters on Dominaria, which is explicitly non-magical with all their firearms. Other planes have firearms or firearm-adjacent tech, but much of it is implied to be partially or wholly magical-Mirrodin, Ravnica, Phyrexia (original), Rath, Ulgrotha, Fiora, Ixalan, and Kaladesh.

Generally, MtG's art directors discourage firearms that resemble real-world firearms because they distract from the fantasy nature of the world.

Ixalan notably, did give the pirates real-world flintlock pistols, but they're generally so small that you can't normally see them on the card art.

How bad an idea is it to go to Draft for my first Magic event (and second game ever)? I would have preferred Sealed, but I wasn't available last week when it was held, I'm scared of running into someone's $800 superdeck if I use my old Return to Ravnica and Gatecrash cards in Modern, and I'm not sure I want to put the time and money into putting a deck together for Standard.

You wouldn't run into a superdeck in Draft, would you? Everyone's deck would be built from the packs each group gets.

@Durazno: No, but I've heard that the need to be familiar with the set and plan ahead based on your early cards makes it a bad format for new players.

[up][up][up]Once someone understands the basic rules, I usually recommend they mostly draft rather than trying to netdeck something for Modern or Standard. (Forget about Legacy and especially Vintage). Limited formats normally allow you to play against quality opponents with no inclination to go easy on you, and the steep learning curve will pay off much faster than trying to follow online guides, and learning the casual formats like Commander and the like is an extra layer of complication to be avoided until you have a firm grasp of deckbuilding.

At the same time, try to find a few friendly people who play Standard-a few drafts/sealed events should net you a sufficient card pool to put together something for Standard, and all but the most heinous Spikes should be willing to walk you through finer points of technique while they practice their Standard builds against your 'rogue' decks.

So I've been fiddling about with Magic Arena and I can now say that I've managed to get up to 53 life with a deck that isn't even particularly dedicated to gaining life.

(It turns out that with Ghalta, Primal Hunger out, Huatli, Warrior Poet's +2 suddenly becomes utter bullshit.)

Huatli having stupid good synergy with an elder dino seems somewhat appropriate.

I've started on MTG Arena as well. It definitely fulfils my hankering for drafting. And without costing me anything to boot!

I felt like playing Magic again after not playing for years, so I went to the local game shop to see if they had anything for people who just want to do casual play. They don't. That really sucks.

Yup. I couldn't play in those even if I wanted to because my cards are all too old.
