It was almost certainly written beforehand but maaaaaaaaaann Goku going "Wow you've gotten so strong Gohan. I can rest easy knowing the Earth will be safe once I'm gone" really hits hard given the circumstances.

103: Sincerely fuck Toyotaro for that "Goku literally forgets his granddaughter is named Pan" joke. Really put a bitter taste in my mouth for the Toriyama memorial at the end of the chapter.

I'm rather sick of the whole idea that Goku doesn't care about his family. Goku DOES care about them, he's just addicted to fighting and adventure and those are what drive his choices first and foremost. That's all it is.

Is it possible that it was Toriyama's idea?
I suspect it might be and I thought there was an interview where they clarified that Toriyama-sensei prefers writing the gags.

It's possible the joke was supposed to be that Goku thought they were talking about bread and it didn't translate well.
That's what I figured too, especially since Goku's happy to see her later on.

Goku goes "Oh right" so it seems it definitely was brief confusion. Plus in the manga Goku and Pan barely even were in the same room as far as we saw.

Is Goku forgetting his own Granddaughter a Toriyama style joke? Not sure.
If it is, you know what? I'm gonna miss it.
This chapter....just seems like a breather, but real life circumstances have made it much more. It's hard to properly judge it with that context.
Mostly, we see that Ultra Instinct still has drawbacks (enough raw speed, and the body's ability to react is surpassed) and that Gohan is back on track to be the biggest and heaviest hitter of Earth's heroes. It remains to be seen how that'll pan out now that the Bird Mangaka is gone.
We can only guess what's in store for the characters next.

Thus Red Pharmaceuticals would go on to invent the Bootstrap Antiviral. We’re essentially where we were just before End of Z but it’s even more bittersweet now. Even the English localization team seems to be choked up.
I was never the biggest fan of KND, but that DBZ gag sent me. Best joke they ever did. The hair was icing on the cake. Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy also had a Dragon Ball Z gag, but they’ve made fun of lots of popular franchises like Pokemon and Harry Potter. Johnny Bravo can briefly be seen watching a show that resembles DBZ. The man was confirmed to be a fan during an episode of JBVO. Even if he couldn’t play a whole episode, he had a good understanding of who was who and what was happening.

I liked KND more before it became the Nigel Uno show and he was put on a pedestal as the greatest KND operative ever. So Season 1 and a bit of Season 2. The pizza box episode was funny, I'll give it credit.

Nigel did pull focus in the later seasons, but I like that they gave everybody except maybe Numbuh 3 some spotlight for a time. Numbuh 4 in that Star Trek-esque alternate universe episode with the negative numbered operatives, Numbuh 2 with his brother tommy and that ace pilot guy, Numbuh 5 with her sister.
Operation ZERO was also one of Cartoon Network's crowning achievements.
