You know, it's kind of funny that the most iconic villain in Dragon Ball, who keeps getting brought back and given more screentime because of his popularity, is super fucking racist. Like, Freeza is one of the most openly and shamelessly racist villains in anime, and he's ridiculously popular.

It also hits different because he's racist against the protagonist. Sometimes you'll have a racist villain, but they tend to be racist towards the side characters or supporting characters introduced in that villain's arc, but Freeza calls Goku a slur more than he says his actual name.

I mean, there's a reason he's called Space Hitler.

These sorts of villains tend to fall under the "love to hate" category. You want characters like Frieza to be utterly despicable, entirely loathesome assholes. It makes it all the more satisfying when the hero gets to break their fucking jaw.

One content creator I follow equates this sort of villain to "hyping up a boss fight". Everything they do, everything they say, everything we learn about them, is all building up for that climactic showdown. They don't become beloved because the audience thinks they're cool people that they'd like to get a drink with, but rather because they're so very effective at setting up the punchline of their comeuppance.

This also manifests in the tendency for heroes to be held to a higher standard than villains. See also, "Goku can't get away with nothin'." People expect their heroes to be virtuous and their villains to be despicable, and tend to overemphasize virtuous acts by the villain or despicable acts by the hero as a result.

Freeza's racism is more of a dub issue tho. He is pretty much notmyselfist, so to speak.

Well he's racist in Japanese too, they just make it way more apparent in the dub by outright giving him a slur.

Gamer Frieza casually drops the "M-Word" on stream, gets cancelled by the God of Destruction.

Zamasu drops N-Words left and right but nobody cancels him.
