This is Eddies site, at the end of the day it's his call. He'd do well to heed the advice of his mods, but at the end of the day it isn't really their decision.

Ultimately, if people hate things here so much, they're welcome to set up another site with a similar concept to Tropes that runs on a different administrative structure.

I am not calling for people to leave and do that, merely pointing out that the option of voting with one's feet, and inspiring change by physically doing it, is available. This website does not have a monopoly on the concept of tropes by any means.

Oh, and to add my dual pennies in the "best mod" list, I think Fighteer deserves more respect than he gets. Camacan, Bobby and Madrugada are all fantastic mods.

I think it's been done. I mean, I know there are at least 3 spin off forums, and a few websites. Most of them died though, I think.

Yep, it has been done before (Jack Butler was a prominent former troper who did that). For all this site's faults, it's doing something right to survive - and to do more than that, to expand and thrive.

[up]It thrives on its brand name. TV Tropes has become a fairly well known place on the internet, so of course people will flock to here rather than to any spinoff forums.

Speaking of mods I think black cat and Madrugada are among the best mods imo

Also, I really like the banhammer on the straw dog idea.

I honestly can't say I have a problem with any of our mods, they all seem to be very professional and still manage to give good personal input on discussions without the mod hat, I enjoy their company. Bobby and I have had some pretty good conversations that we've carried onto the PM level before, and Maddy is always there to get people acting like adults again.

I don't see what's wrong with OTC though, it doesn't feel any more or less civil than usual to me, not like there's some horrible epidemic that needs fixing.

They complained about that dude who made that controversial Africa thread not getting banned(thus getting widely hated here, as shown by the negative votes he got).

I just read that thread, the OP looked to be behaving within guidelines, there were several other people being controversial, and not too many being openly inflammatory. There were a few thumps, but none of them that I could see when the conversation got heated were from the OP.

Doesn't seem like that big of a deal.. Controversial topic unrailed a bit and some people argued, I'd say lock it and move on.

Edit: Oh, Ramidel. He didn't appear to say anything banworthy. Either he was being slightly a troll, which is possibly banworthy if it's obvious enough, or he's just a moron with really controversial opinions. I've seen Savage Heathen say more obnoxious things and he's still around, Ramidel never really got to that "Branding former police officers and having them executed post-torture for being pigs" kind of rant he gets to at times.

What's the big deal? I have a thread on the psychology and statistical trends of suicide from the 1950's to present that I really want to post. tongue

Petty name-calling and rudeness aren't hepful, I think.

Those reactions in that thread are understandable, but they simply aren't useful in any way. Don't feed the Trolls. Ignore them. And if you think you aren't dealing with a Troll or just can't ignore them then a polite and detailed answer will be the best course of action. An answer like: "Are you fucking nuts? Go get a therapist." only serves to make that person angry and probably will convince them that their opinion is the "right" one, because pissing someone off is a good way to make sure that the person in question won't listen to your arguments anymore.

So I think being reasonable and polite ultimately is the best course of action.

Exactly. And as to mod action, I'd say to just "lock and walk" if he does that crap again in another thread, suspend him. Seems rather simple to me.

Holler 'em, and see if he's still around after that. Because if it's worse than what Ramidel was posting, he really, really shouldn't be.

I usually only holler at trolls, savage heathen can be obnoxious, but he can be reasoned with and doesn't do it to troll.

I'm more into letting the voice of the majority shut down obnoxious folks, no need to call the hand of god in when it isn't needed. I can abide obnoxious, it's when there's malicious intent that it's time for action.

I guess what I mean is that he contributes, and when he goes overboard we tend to be able to calm him down. Thus I feel he's worth keeping around, I'd be sad to see Savage go, because despite being a dissenting voice of what people like me think, I don't like Echo Chambers.
