I just had what I think might have been my highest scoring game yet. 241 points, with 83 of that coming from a single turn when I hit a bingo.

So, after getting pumped about that, I noticed we didn't have a thread for it. Any interesting stories? Here's one: I ended up inadvertently teaching my 14 year old brother a new word after deciding to play "HYMEN".

[up] Heh...I gotta ask - are you male or female, because that really makes the awkward factor vary.

The closest I've come to Scrabble in a long time was playing a couple of games with my wife a month or so ago, although I play Words with Friends all the time on my iPhone and have hit a couple of 100+ words.

Male. Though it was probably made more awkward since I was also playing with both my parents and my mom ended up explaining it to him.

It was pretty funny. He was about to challenege it, and I told him it definitely was a word and he doesn't want to have to look it up.

I apologise for Necroing this thread but a new edition of the official Scrabble dictionary has been released and I was interested in what people thought of some of new words such as: ok, ew, bizjet, qapik and facepalm.

I recall playing a game of Scrabble, in which I tried to turn the word "REAL" into "REALTOR" (i.e., a seller of real estate) — and it got challenged because the word wasn't listed in the Official Scrabble Dictionary.

Yeah, F*** you, too...

The rules I play by are: (1) No proper names, and (2) any word found in Webster's Unabridged Dictionary is legal.

You got nailed by Stuck on Band-Aid Brand - "Realtor" technically is a proper noun, referring to a member of the National Association Of Realtors, who are still holding out against Brand Name Takeover - they even have a registered trademark. Said trademark was upheld as recently as 2016.

Split hairs if you'd like as to whether or not it should be one, but "Realtor" is a proper name for a member of that organization (the generic term for the occupation is still "real estate agent"). And, well, once you start arguing about one particular proper noun, you open the door to arguing about all of them. Like it or not, challenging "realtor" was fair.

As to the new words being added... well, I'm more interested in the "bingo" end of the dictionary, but I just know I'm going to run afoul of the short end way more (particularly as my wife loves to basically build nests of words that do almost no branching out).
