Konami wanted just stock? Just when we were ready to think they've gone crazy enough...

And Microsoft might still be interested in doing something with Kojima and Del Toro? Hmmmmmmmm...

[up][up]That's pretty cracky as far as theories go. But then I think all the endings are canon in different timelines. And I do mean all of them.

[up]Microsoft? If there was one game that make me regret choosing a PS 4, whatever Del Toro and Kojima conjured would certainly be the case. Meh, it would still take years. Long enough for me to save up money for an X Bone to play one game.

I'd have thought Sony would try to make a deal, considering the success of PT.

[up]Um, the way PT got removed from the PSN, was that all Konami or was it 25% Sony and 75% Konami?

Because if Sony was involved in PT's removal in some way, then maybe it might have left some bad taste...

[up]I don't actually know. I'd have thought Sony would've liked to keep it around. "Hey guys, we have a short but awesome horror game and guess what? It's absolutely free!"

But again, I dunno.

I mean, it costs Sony money to have people download it from their servers.

Well, there is some basis to this given that the UFO endings have continuity.

And the Dog might transcend space and time.

[up]The Dog is the only thing that's canon.

Can I say I kind of object to the repeated insinuation that "In Water" is the "most canon" SH2 ending? I mean, the whole game is about James coming to terms with what he did and moving past his problems. Why would the ending where he doesn't move past his problems be the "most canon?" It feels like a bait-and-switch.

The guy who is probably his dad in 4 did say his son never returned from Silent Hill. Not definitive but it does lean towards that ending.

Or "Maria," which is arguably even worse.

It was also used in the novelization and I think at least one of the designers said it was his favorite ending. Hence "repeated insinuations."

Frankly I think Maria represents a greater failure to not move past his problems.

The Maria ending opens up a lot of questions. One in particular I've pondered: is James stuck in Silent Hill now, or can he leave? If he can leave, will other people be able to see Maria, or would they just see some loon talking to his invisible girlfriend?

"Maria" totally represents a more complete failure to move past his problems.

"In Water" James comes to terms with what he did to Mary just as much as "Leave" James does, he just has a very different response to making peace with it. It also explains a lot about how he got here in the first place: he came back to Silent Hill to kill himself. There was never a letter. "I got a letter from Mary somehow" needled its way into his mind once Silent Hill had its claws in him; the physical letter is revealed to be a blank sheet of paper once James has progressed far enough, unwriting itself when he's close to overcoming the truth of his actions.

The Red Pyramid and Maria are a response of denial over what happened to Mary. Maria is a rejection of his involvement in her death. The Red Pyramid is his bitter self-image in response to it. Overcoming them both is a matter of overcoming his own traumatized denial and repression. But killing himself is a response to life without Mary, not an act of denial and repression toward his involvement.

I mean, this series shares a setting with Metal Gear maybe. Based on a handful of references.

Which references?

In MGS 3 you can find some paintings from Silent Hill 3 of the Cult's god.

In MGSV you can hear the radio from P.T.

Including the "look behind you" one and the swedish one.

And like.

Would that actually change anything about either series, frankly?

The Silent Hill series tends to be a focused, character based one on a relatively intimate scale.

And, like, Metal Gear does that to in some instances, but there's always this big political military drama in the background.

But. The thing is that Silent Hill never goes into any details about what the geopolitical situation of its setting is like. Because Silent Hill doesn't really care.

What matters is the town of Silent Hill and the Toluca Lake area somewhere in the U.S. It never really goes outside of there, or references a lot of events outside there.

For all we know outside of the town could be basically anything.

It seems like for the most part people live ordinary lives, but it seems like for all of Metal Gear's bizarreness, none of the wacky stuff really tends to affect the average individual civilian. Not in the continental U.S. anyway.

I mean, occasionally a nuclear-equipped internet boat crashes into the statue of liberty, but. Other than making a few headlines, would that really affect the average resident of Silent Hill?

But on the other hand, you can't take back a suicide. At least in "Maria" he has a... coping mechanism, for lack of a better term. Like those doctors' notes said...

I wouldn't call it a coping mechanism.

I'd call it not learning a damn thing and repeating everything all over again.

The most horrifying thing for me about the Maria ending is how cyclical it makes the game seem.

With suicide, at least it's an ending.

I have a hard time deciding which is worse, myself.

As a sidenote, I have in real life encountered a man who thinks he's married to a mannequin. Maria doesn't seem so odd to me compared to that.

To be honest SH and MGS sharing a verse would explain surprising amount for both series.

[up] Just to clarify, what I posted was obviously just a fictional tale of terror and nothing more.

So let's stop freaking out and praise the stars that Kojima's finally left Konami.

No. Really. He did.
