Has anyone read Asterix and the Griffin? It makes the Sarmatians out to be amazons with a full gender role reversal. Is that historical for Sarmatians?

It is a theory, that the legends did spring from those people. Due to burials being found of female warriors. But probably exaggerated for humor.

Oh, I see. Is that the same kind of theory that declares Vikings to have had gender equality because they found the occasional burial site of a woman with weapons? Because that does sound similar.

In the French edition all the male Sarmatians seem to have names ending in -ine (including a Klorokine). For some reason the English edition has them end in -ov. I guess this was a matter of making puns that work.

The Gauls did think that the Normans had silly names because of them all ending in the same two letters (af). Asterix, Obelix, Vitalstatistix, Cacofonix, Getafix and other villagers had a laugh about it.

I don't think I've ever read the comics, but I've seen the animated cartoons, how do they compare for someone who has read the comics and watched the films?

The comics are generally pretty good, a few albums excepted (the aliens one is definitely the worst).

As for the cartoons, they are a real mixed bag, some are really good, and some are quite awful, but it's worth watching them if you can find the box set.

Comics are great, unlike Unhygienix's fish.

I've read the comics years ago and I really enjoyed them. They were pretty hilarious to read through. I honestly have never seen the cartoon series though.

I love animation, TV, movies, YOU NAME IT!

How is the live action film on Netflix?

It's not so much a cartoon series as a collection of separate movies made by different studios. Hence the wild variation in quality and style.

[up] Which one? There are a few of those as well.

I haven't heard of that one. It seems part of a series, but it doesn't include the few I have seen recently, which I think were 3D.

That would be the newest one, where Asterix and Obelix travel to China.

The Big Fight cartoon is a combination of the Soothsayer book and the Big Fight Book.

[up][up]I was a bit disappointed with it when I watched it because I thought it would just be a cartoon version of the Big Fight.

I get that, but the Seer is just so much fun. So is mad Panoramix, for that matter.

I also watched that one a lot as kid, as well as Asterix versus Caesar, which combined the plots of Asterix the Gladiator and Asterix the Legionary.

Many French people (that would include me) would tell you that the animated films are great, and the only good live-action film is Asterix & Obelix: Mission Cleopatra. And then some of the jokes are dated and related to French television.

One of the greatest ideas in Asterix & Obelix: Mission Cleopatra is that Asterix and Obelix don't have much screen time. Because these characters don't translate well to live action.

I did find it a good film. I hadn't read Asterix and the Big Fight so I had hoped that this would be an animated version of the comic book.

These movies almost never do a straight adaptation, I've noticed.
