Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! I'm editing this OP and pinning it to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

I don't think Marvel is going to try making a horror movie, or any movie that veers away from their action/comedy/drama mix.

What makes the MCU so successful is that, if people enjoy one of the movies, they're told, "If you like A, then you'll also love B, C, D, E, and F." But there are a lot of people who love action movies who can't stand horror movies (and a smaller number where it's vice-versa). If someone who loved Doctor Strange goes to see a Tomb of Dracula movie, but has a miserable time when it turns out to be a straight-up horror flick, then when future Marvel movies come out, even ones they might enjoy, they'll be more hesitant to go see it, because the Marvel brand no longer guarantees the kind of movie they're into.

Until we know how big a role the Skrulls play, we should just assume her true arch enemy is old ladies.

Apparently they can use any Skrull they want except Super Skrull (since he was deliberately evocative of the Fantastic Four).

Whoa. Great to see Marvel pitched her more projects after she was initially considered for the Black Widow movie.

So if the Skrulls are infiltrating S.H.I.E.L.D. and Hydra is infiltrating S.H.I.E.L.D., how many Skrulls are infiltrating Hydra infiltrating S.H.I.E.L.D.? And do the S.H.I.E.L.D. Skrulls know the Hydra Skrulls are Hydra? Or are the Hydra Skrulls infiltrating the S.H.I.E.L.D. Skrulls too?

Whut? You mean we actually get a female director for an action movie NOT featuring a female lead? Bring it on!

Also, this might be the best analysis I have seen of Infinity War so far:

And I think that even that one has only scratched the surface.

Which other movies has this Chloe Zhao made?

Not that is means much at this point, but I doubt people would be particuparly excited over a complete newcomer.

I don't know if this has discussed before, but if the MCU were to integrate the X-men, and therefore Magneto, how do you think they should adapt his background?

One of his biggest character points is the irony between his status as a Holocaust survivor and his view of mutants as the superior species. However, the X-men would be (hypothetically) set on the 2020's, so him being a Holocaust survivor might not be entirely believable (unless we add to his power-set some sort of increased longevity thing).

So, again, do you guys think Magneto should be adapted with a similar background, like being a survivor of the Rwandan genocide or the Palestine-Israel conflict, or should his character be adapted to reflect a more modern issue, like the discrimination of minorities?

At this rate, I'd just suggest going with the simple Mutant supremacist version used in the Ultimate Universe if only because it will be less offensive than the Holocaust or any real life act of mass murder.

You can’t change his origin, him being a holocaust survivor is utterly timeless even if time moves on.

Just have him live long or age slowly for whatever reason.

[up] That would just make him a generic asshole.

I'm also interested in Zhao's filmography as well. I believe I've seen her name brought up with respect to The Rider before, either in this thread or the Diversity in Films one.

The X-Men Evolution has a episode where ir shows that the machine that gave Cap his powers is lethal to humans in the longterm, but to those with the X-gene it reverses aging. They could put something similar, the MCU has more Super-Soldier projects than I have bellow average grades on my college terms.

Also, since when is Magneto being a Holocaust survivor offensive? It makes him all the more relatable: he saw just how monstruous prejudice can make humanity act, and is simply desperate to avoid that happening again.

And its not like being a victim of prejudice means you are immune to being a prejudiced person yourself, as the biphobia inside the LGBT community, just to point to one example, clearly shows.

You could have him be a survivor of a more recent genocide, possibly with a Race Lift to correspond. The Holocaust is awful, to be sure, but it's far from the only example of humans being such monstrous dicks to people with the "wrong" genetic traits.

Well, it could work, but I'm not sure if Race Lift such a famous Jewish character is going to go over all that well.

Honestly, I'd rather they don't use Magneto entirely right now. Give the spotlight to some of the lesser known team members.

Like Nightcrawler! Everyone loves Nightcrawler! Give me a Nightcrawler movie, Kevin, I never asked anything from before!

Zhao made The Rider and Songs My Brothers Taught Me, both of which are dramas set in the American Heartland, wth 90+ RT ratings and beautiful, sombrely Elysian cinematography. As far as action goes, The Rider is about a rodeo cowboy, and Songs has at least one explosion. I could see it dovetailing nicely with a sweeping, epic, historical sort of feel for The Eternals.

You really don't need to remove Magneto's Holocaust backstory. Just say that his powers somehow keep him unnaturally long lived or something. Or even do what X-Men: Evolution did by justifying his relative youth in relation to the Super Soldier project.

At this rate, I'd just suggest going with the simple Mutant supremacist version used in the Ultimate Universe if only because it will be less offensive than the Holocaust or any real life act of mass murder.

Gonna be a big no from me, dawg.

The Holocaust isn't simply Magneto's story. It was a real life event that to this day still affects a lot of people and deserves to be treated with much more respect than a super villain's Freudian Excuse. No, being a victim of prejudice doesn't make you immune to prejudiced beliefs. But this narrative of marginalized groups becoming mass threats to members of non-marginalized groups is incredibly outdated and inaccurate.

It also does not help that writers only care about Magneto's Jewish identity when they want to exploit the Holocaust for a cheap tug on the heart strings. Really, would anyone even know Magneto is Jewish if not for the writers always bringing up concentration camps in his stories?

I could see them making a horror-esque action/thriller, with Arcade. Like, he kidnaps a bunch of minor heroes and new characters and takes them to Murderworld, where they have to work together as he picks them off one by one.
